Choose OBS if you need to arrange scenes, manage audio and video sources visually, and monitor output in an interface. Choose FFmpeg if you already run scripted command-line media pipelines and want your stream workflow to fit that setup. Neither is proven to run longer without intervention: the available official documentation does not establish an OBS-versus-FFmpeg reliability winner or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. Whichever you use, meet YouTube’s ingest requirements, test your real ASMR audio and video, and monitor stream health.
OBS or FFmpeg: which workflow fits?
| Consideration | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | A graphical interface for arranging sources and configuring output. Suits operators who want to compose and inspect a scene visually. | A command-line media tool. Suits operators who are comfortable building a scripted media pipeline and managing its deployment. |
| Scene and source setup | OBS documents an integrated approach to arranging audio and video sources. | The reviewed official sources do not establish a detailed comparison of FFmpeg’s scene or source workflow against OBS. |
| Reconnect and visibility | OBS documents reconnect controls and dropped-frame reporting. These controls do not guarantee recovery. | The reviewed sources do not provide a comparable account of FFmpeg reconnect controls or monitoring. |
| 24/7 endurance | Not established by a controlled comparison in the available sources. | Not established by a controlled comparison in the available sources. |
This is a workflow choice, not a proven reliability contest. Prefer OBS when visual composition, source management, and operational visibility matter. Consider FFmpeg when a scripted pipeline suits the way you deploy media. For either, verify the encoder and host you actually use against YouTube’s requirements, then run a representative test before relying on it.
Set a YouTube-compatible stream baseline
YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS streaming and recommends RTMPS. YouTube’s API guide describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; it requires a valid endpoint and application path, uses port 443, and the encoder must handle TLS/SNI correctly. The guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, says: “RTMPS is a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially if it requires low latency.” Read YouTube’s RTMPS ingest guide.
Video codec, rate control, and keyframes
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with up to 60 fps. Use a codec supported by your chosen encoder and stream configuration. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For H.264, YouTube’s recommended starting bitrates are 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. These are platform recommendations, not ASMR-specific optimums or guarantees of reliable delivery. Bitrate guidance depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose a setting that your available upload connection can sustain; test it under conditions representative of the actual stream.
Stereo audio
YouTube’s advanced audio recommendations for stereo are AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. Use an audio encoder your setup supports, then listen to a test stream using representative ASMR material. Meeting a platform specification does not ensure that the audio sounds right: check levels, noise, channels, and the character of quiet details in the actual output. See YouTube’s audio recommendations.

Prepare, test, and monitor the broadcast
- Choose the operating workflow. Set up scenes and sources in OBS if you need visual control, or build the FFmpeg pipeline if command-line deployment fits your operation. Confirm the selected encoder supports your intended codec and settings on the host you will use.
- Configure YouTube ingest. Prefer RTMPS when supported. Enter the valid ingest endpoint and stream key in your encoder, keep the key private, and use YouTube’s current published requirements for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Set and verify output. Start with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Select a codec-appropriate bitrate that the upload connection can sustain; for H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps at 720p or 5 Mbps at 1080p. For stereo, use the supported audio settings described above.
- Run a representative test before the event. Use the actual kind of audio and movement planned for the ASMR stream. Check how it sounds and looks at the receiving end, and confirm the stream reaches YouTube as expected. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and video motion.
- Watch the event in YouTube Studio. Monitor stream health and read any messages during the broadcast. OBS exposes reconnect settings, including retry count and initial retry interval, and reports dropped frames; configure and observe these controls rather than assuming a reconnect will always succeed. YouTube’s guidance is to monitor, not a promise of uninterrupted delivery.
What a 24/7 setup can and cannot promise
An always-on broadcast depends on the whole path: the encoder, host, network connection, and YouTube ingest. The official material available here does not compare OBS and FFmpeg endurance, failure recovery, resource use, or archive behavior under controlled conditions. It also does not establish what happens to every archive after an interruption. Do not treat an encoder’s reconnect option or YouTube’s stream-health display as proof of continuous uptime. Plan to check the stream and test how your specific setup behaves after a restart or connection loss.
