Choose OBS if church volunteers need a visual interface for scenes, lyrics, and other live presentation changes. Choose FFmpeg if playback is a fixed prerecorded file or sequence and someone can configure and supervise a command-line process. Neither is inherently more reliable: uninterrupted delivery depends on the computer or server, network, YouTube settings, monitoring, and recovery plan. If the church does not want to keep a local computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that loops uploaded videos on YouTube.

Which fits a church worship channel better?

Question OBS FFmpeg
How do you operate it? Visual streaming software, useful when an operator needs to see and control a composed program. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software at no charge. Command-line media tool, suited to a configured file-playout or processing pipeline; someone must maintain the command and its environment.
When is it a better fit? When volunteers may need to change scenes, graphics, overlays, or other parts of a worship presentation. When the stream is mostly fixed prerecorded playback, looping, or a scripted sequence and a visual production interface is unnecessary.
What does the documented workflow support? OBS can act as a streaming encoder. The reviewed documentation does not describe a specific playlist setup for this exact church use case. FFmpeg documents infinite input looping with -stream_loop -1, native-rate reading with -re, and stream copy with -c copy when the input is compatible.
What about reliability? No head-to-head uptime evidence establishes an advantage. OBS reports connection status and dropped frames. No head-to-head uptime evidence establishes an advantage. Looping options do not by themselves make a process self-healing; monitoring and restart behavior depend on the process and host setup.
What does it cost to operate? YouTube lists OBS as no-charge open-source software, but a capable computer and ongoing operation are still needed. The software is a media tool, but total ownership cost is not established here; a computer or server and technical operator may be needed.

This is workflow guidance based on documented roles and capabilities, not a comparative reliability test or measurement of volunteer learning time. Pick the workflow the church can monitor and recover, not just the one that starts most easily.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the service is about to start.
  • The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it beyond the people who configure the encoder.
  • A computer or server that can stay on, play the source media, and run the chosen software, plus a stable wired upload connection if available.
  • A representative test video containing the movement and audio conditions expected in the real stream, and an operator responsible for watching stream health.
  • A separate plan for keeping recordings or archives. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume this promise covers one uninterrupted 24-hour event as a single video.

Set YouTube-compatible video and audio settings

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Check the channel’s current ingest options and encoder documentation when configuring a stream.

1080p30 video codec YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube minimum bitrate
H.264 10 Mbps 5 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube’s 2026 encoder-setting recommendations, not a guarantee that a church’s internet connection can sustain the rate. Choose resolution and bitrate against a measured, stable upload capacity, leaving headroom for normal network variation. YouTube’s advanced audio guidance includes stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

Set up the OBS workflow

  1. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio in advance. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create or select the YouTube live stream. In the stream’s encoder setup, obtain the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
  3. Configure OBS as the encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the streaming settings. Select RTMPS when available, and set video, audio, CBR, and keyframe parameters to match YouTube’s current ingest guidance and your connection.
  4. Add the prerecorded program. Add the video source and configure playback or scene transitions to match the church’s intended program. The reviewed sources do not establish a one-size-fits-all OBS playlist configuration for a continuous church channel, so verify the chosen source behavior in a test.
  5. Run a representative test. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream, confirm picture and sound at YouTube, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health feedback. In OBS, watch connection status and dropped-frame indicators.
  6. Assign ongoing coverage. Decide who checks the stream and what that person should do if playback, the computer, network, or YouTube ingest fails.

OBS’s help explains that it connects directly to the streaming destination rather than through OBS-operated servers. A stable encoder configuration cannot compensate for a failing local network or a computer that shuts down.

Set up the FFmpeg workflow

  1. Enable YouTube live streaming and create the stream. Copy the server URL and private stream key from YouTube Studio. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Check the media before building the command. Confirm the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and duration. Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but only works when the source streams are compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements and the desired output.
  3. Choose the playback approach. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping and -re to read input at its native rate. Use stream copy (-c copy) only when the existing codecs and stream parameters suit the target; otherwise a configured encode is needed. The exact command depends on the file, codecs, output protocol, and chosen encoding settings, so validate it against current FFmpeg and YouTube documentation rather than relying on a generic command.
  4. Use YouTube’s current ingest settings. Prefer RTMPS where available; configure CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), an appropriate frame rate, and audio settings. Select resolution and bitrate to fit the real upload connection.
  5. Test, log, and supervise. Confirm YouTube receives stable video and audio and review stream health. Arrange for process logs, an operator or supervisor, and a recovery procedure; FFmpeg’s loop option alone does not restart a failed process or restore a dropped YouTube connection.

FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode copies packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. That can avoid an unnecessary encode for compatible media, but it does not remove the need to verify that the source is acceptable to YouTube.

Test and operate the stream

  • Test with representative audio and movement, not a static frame or silent clip, and confirm the received stream at YouTube.
  • Watch YouTube stream-health feedback during setup and operation. With OBS, rising dropped-frame counts point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
  • Document who has access to the stream key, where the source files live, who checks the channel, and how the church will respond to encoder, network, or ingest failure.
  • Decide how to preserve the program independently of YouTube’s live archive behavior. The automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; confirm the current workflow for longer events and maintain a separate recording plan if the archive matters.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the encoder stream Live streaming is not enabled, the server URL or key is wrong, or the ingest connection is unavailable. Confirm channel activation, recheck the current stream URL and key in Studio, and verify the selected RTMPS/RTMP settings.
Dropped frames or unstable stream The connection is unstable or the configured bitrate exceeds what the upload can sustain. Review OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators, YouTube stream health, and the actual stable upload capacity; lower bitrate or resolution if needed.
Video appears but audio does not Audio source, codec, or output configuration is wrong. Verify that the source includes audio, the encoder sends AAC or MP3 as supported, and YouTube receives the expected stereo signal.
FFmpeg stops and the channel goes offline The process ended, host failed, or the ingest connection dropped; looping only repeats input while the process runs. Inspect logs and host/network status, then ensure a responsible operator or configured supervisor can restart and confirm the stream.
The 24-hour stream is not archived as expected The documented automatic archive guidance is for streams under 12 hours. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour event is automatically saved as one video; verify YouTube’s current archive workflow and keep a separate recording if needed.
