Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose OBS for a 24/7 YouTube stream when you need visual scenes and hands-on control; choose FFmpeg when your video pipeline is repeatable and you want to operate it from scripts. Neither is proven categorically more reliable for continuous streaming: uptime also depends on the media source, host, power, network, monitoring, and recovery plan. For a cloud-run alternative, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping on YouTube without leaving a computer on.
OBS vs FFmpeg: the practical difference
| Consideration | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Visual production with scenes and operator interaction. | Repeatable media processing and a scripted pipeline. |
| How you work | Configure and operate through a graphical production application. | Configure and operate through command-line options and scripts. |
| Ongoing operation | Plan who or what will monitor the application and respond to problems. | Plan how the process will be monitored and restarted if it stops. |
| Comparative reliability, CPU use, and recovery | No controlled head-to-head evidence establishes which tool is more reliable, uses less CPU, or recovers better for a 24/7 stream. Results depend on versions, configuration, host, source, and network. | |
For an interactive channel that changes layouts, overlays, or other on-screen elements, OBS is the more natural workflow. For a fixed playlist or media pipeline that should run through a script, FFmpeg is worth considering. Those are workflow recommendations, not benchmark results.
Configure YouTube ingest before choosing an encoder
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, rather than targeting the highest setting your hardware can briefly produce. The recommendations and figures below come from YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year. YouTube Live encoder settings.
H.264 bitrate reference points
| H.264 output | YouTube’s listed minimum | YouTube’s listed recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These values apply to the listed H.264 resolutions and frame rate, not automatically to H.265 or AV1. YouTube provides separate bitrate guidance for those codecs. Use its current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select.

Other encoder settings
- Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo audio, its guidance specifies 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps.
- Color: For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
OBS and FFmpeg expose different configuration workflows, so consult the documentation for the version you install rather than assuming a setting or command is identical across releases. The YouTube ingest requirements apply regardless of which encoder you choose.
Set up a self-hosted stream
- Create the live event: In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and use Live Control Room to create or open the stream. Follow the current prompts for your channel and event.
- Choose the stream settings: Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, bitrate, and keyframe interval to a combination your system and upload can sustain, using the YouTube guidance above.
- Connect your encoder: Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS or your FFmpeg workflow. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in a public script, log, screenshot, or source repository.
- Start sending the source: In OBS, start the stream after confirming the intended scene and media source. With FFmpeg, run your configured command or script against the intended media input and YouTube ingest destination.
- Check the preview and stream health: Confirm that picture and sound reach Live Control Room before relying on the feed. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health while live.
- Keep the whole system available: The media source, host, power, and upload connection must continue working. Arrange a way to notice a stopped or unhealthy feed and respond; the encoder choice alone does not guarantee recovery.
Plan for continuity, archives, and copyright
Keep the source and host running
A local OBS or FFmpeg stream depends on a host that stays powered and responsive, a stable upload connection, and an available source file or production input. For a continuous channel, decide in advance how you will notice an outage and restart or otherwise recover the encoder. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal restart recipe or promise that either tool will reconnect after every failure.

Understand YouTube’s stream and broadcast model
Google’s Live API documentation distinguishes a liveStream (the encoder connection settings) from a liveBroadcast (the event viewers watch). One stream may be bound to as many as three broadcasts; the guide’s 24/7 example uses a continuing feed alongside a separate interview broadcast. This API model can help explain how YouTube manages live events, but ordinary streams do not require you to use the API. The guide was last updated September 14, 2026. Google YouTube Live API guide.
Do not assume one complete archive for a feed over 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours will produce one complete archive. If a full recording matters, plan how you will retain a separate copy and verify the resulting archive rather than relying on an assumption about a longer broadcast. YouTube Help: archive live streams.

Use content you have rights to stream
Streaming a recording does not remove copyright obligations. Use music, video, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel. YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program; eligibility and channel-specific conditions should be checked in its current guidance. YouTube Help: live-stream monetization.
When HLS is relevant
HLS is a YouTube ingest option to consider for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, not a default route for every stream. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments, and its ultra-low-latency option is disabled for HLS. The HLS requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments lasting one to four seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. OBS is listed among encoders that support HLS output. YouTube Help: HLS ingest.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Ingest address, stream key, encoder state, or network. | Confirm the current server URL and key in Live Control Room, check that the encoder is sending, and verify the host can reach the internet. |
| Stream health is poor or the picture breaks up | Upload capacity or an unstable connection. | Lower resolution or bitrate to a sustainable level and test under conditions representative of the live stream. |
| Picture arrives but audio is absent or wrong | Source routing or audio configuration. | Check the selected audio source, codec, stereo configuration, and sample rate; inspect the YouTube preview before relying on the feed. |
| Feed stops when nobody is at the computer | Host power, sleep settings, process failure, or lost network. | Keep the host awake and connected, and arrange monitoring and a recovery procedure appropriate to the system. |
| A long broadcast is missing part of its archive | Archive expectations for streams beyond YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive scope. | Retain a separate local recording where a complete copy is important and verify the archive after the broadcast. |
| HLS feed has more delay than expected | HLS’s segmented delivery. | Account for the higher latency versus RTMP; HLS does not offer YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option. |
