Choose OBS if you want to arrange artwork, scenes, overlays, and audio through a visual interface. Choose FFmpeg if your broadcast is a fixed media sequence and you are comfortable operating commands or scripts. Neither choice is established as the more reliable 24/7 option: continuous streaming also needs suitable hardware and internet, monitoring, and a tested recovery plan. For a prerecorded story loop, you can also run it from the cloud instead of keeping a local computer on.

For a story broadcast made from finished recordings, FFmpeg may be a natural fit if the sequence is fixed and you can supervise a command-line workflow. OBS is often the more approachable starting point if you want to compose scenes, change artwork, use live narration, or inspect the programme visually. These are workflow distinctions, not reliability test results.

Set YouTube’s ingest settings before building the broadcast
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings

These figures are examples, not universal 24/7 presets. Match resolution, frame rate, and codec to the source material and a stable upload connection. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Test with representative narration, music, and movement, then use YouTube’s stream-health messages to spot problems before relying on a long broadcast.

Build the stream in OBS
- Prepare the content. Arrange the story videos, artwork, and audio you have permission to use. In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast and add the needed sources, such as a media source for a recording, an image for story art, or an audio input for live narration. Check that the preview shows the intended composition and that audio is audible.
- Set the picture size. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to the format you intend to send. A 1080p30 H.264 broadcast is one example; use it only if your source, system, and connection can sustain it.
- Set the encoder. In Settings > Output, use an encoder supported by your system and set rate control to CBR. Set the video bitrate to suit the selected resolution and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If you use 1080p30 H.264, YouTube’s 2026 guidance lists 14 Mbps as recommended; confirm that your upload connection can reliably support the outgoing stream.
- Check audio. Set stereo audio to AAC where available, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz to match YouTube’s listed stereo settings. Listen to the full path, including any microphone, preamp, or music source you are using.
- Connect to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service option available in your version, and connect your account or enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with people who should not control your broadcast.
- Preview and go live. Start the encoder, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream health, and then start the event. Keep OBS open and the computer awake for as long as this local setup is responsible for the broadcast.
OBS labels can vary by version and operating system. If a setting is not in the path above, check the settings available in your installed version rather than assuming a particular encoder option exists.
Send a looping file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg suits a fixed prerecorded sequence when you are comfortable checking a command and its output. The example below loops one video file, converts it to 1080p30 H.264 with stereo AAC audio, and sends it to the RTMPS address and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. It is a starting configuration, not a guarantee of compatibility or uninterrupted operation. FFmpeg documentation

The command requests a 14 Mbps video stream, so do not use it unless your stable upload capacity can carry the stream with headroom. If the file has no audio, or its aspect ratio, frame rate, or sound needs a different treatment, adapt and test the command instead of assuming this example fits it unchanged.

Make a 24/7 operation recoverable
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder event at least two hours before the scheduled event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. Its checklist also calls for previewing in Live Control Room, testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet, checking archive integrity and file growth, checking channel and watch-page accessibility on mobile, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. - Before launch, verify that the intended stories and artwork appear in the right order, and listen for narration, music, silence, distortion, or abrupt transitions.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast; a locally running encoder does not prove that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
- If recording locally, verify that the archive is growing and can be played back. A live stream and its local recording are separate things to check.
- Rehearse what the operator will do if the encoder stops, the internet fails, or the stream is interrupted. A UPS, spare encoder, or redundant network are optional continuity measures, not requirements specified by YouTube.
Neither OBS nor FFmpeg is established here as the more stable choice for continuous streaming. The available official guidance gives YouTube operating recommendations, but does not promise 24/7 uptime or supply a sustained-use comparison between the encoders.

Account for children’s safety and content rights
Classify the audience accurately
If a channel or stream is set as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on made-for-kids live streams and Premieres, though contextual ads may still appear. YouTube’s children and safety restrictions
Know which minor-related rule applies
YouTube says streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. This concerns minors appearing in the stream; it does not automatically apply to prerecorded illustrations with adult narration. Protect personal information, and moderate chat where it is available.

Secure rights for every part of the programme
Confirm that you have the rights needed for the story text, edition or translation, illustrations, music, performances, recordings, and any archive or rebroadcast. YouTube lists an active copyright strike and a match to another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons live-streaming restrictions can apply. Whether a particular work or recording is cleared depends on its rights and circumstances; the streaming software does not grant permission.
