Choose OBS Studio if you need to build and control a live scene—for example, combining gameplay, camera sources, overlays, and audio. Choose FFmpeg if your stream is a repeatable, scripted media pipeline and you are comfortable configuring its inputs, filters, encoder, and output. Neither name guarantees better picture quality, reliability, or performance at 4K60; test the complete setup on the machine and connection you will use.

Whichever workflow you choose, YouTube’s English-language live encoder guidance lists a recommended 35 Mbps H.264 bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps, CBR encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Regional versions of YouTube’s settings page can differ, so check the page for your locale before configuring a stream.

OBS or FFmpeg: which workflow fits your stream?

Decision OBS Studio FFmpeg
Best fit A live production that combines and manages sources in scenes, such as gameplay, a camera, overlays, and audio. A repeatable, scripted media pipeline whose inputs, processing, encoding, and output can be configured as a command-line workflow.
How you work OBS’s integrated application documents capture, compositing, encoding, recording, and streaming, with graphical controls for a live show. You configure the pipeline rather than arranging a production through a scene-based graphical interface. Exact current commands and protocol/codec combinations for YouTube were not established here, so use current FFmpeg documentation for your build rather than copying an unverified command.
Encoding choices OBS supports software encoding and hardware encoders. Hardware encoding can offload CPU work; image quality at the same bitrate depends on the encoder and its generation. Results depend on the FFmpeg build, selected encoder, settings, and hardware. FFmpeg is not inherently faster or higher quality simply because it is a command-line tool.
Who should start here? Creators who want to compose scenes, manage sources, and adjust a live production in one application. Technically comfortable users who need a repeatable command-line media workflow and can configure and troubleshoot it.

The useful comparison is workflow, source composition, encoder support, and your ability to test and troubleshoot—not the software name or bitrate alone. A fair comparison requires appropriate settings in both workflows and testing the actual scene on the target hardware.

Set YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings

YouTube’s English-language live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these settings for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. They are published ingest targets, not a promise that a particular encoder, internet connection, scene, or viewer will sustain the result.

Setting YouTube guidance for 4K60 Practical note
H.264 bitrate 35 Mbps recommended Use this as YouTube’s recommended H.264 target, then verify the actual stream and connection under representative load.
AV1 or H.265/HEVC bitrate 10–40 Mbps minimum-to-maximum range This is the published range for these codecs at 4K/2160p and 60 fps; it is not the H.264 recommendation.
Bitrate encoding CBR Configure constant bitrate in the encoder.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; interval should not exceed four seconds Set two seconds unless a documented compatibility need requires otherwise, and do not exceed YouTube’s stated maximum interval.
Protocol and frame rate RTMP/RTMPS ingest; frame rates up to 60 fps YouTube recommends RTMPS where the encoder and workflow support it.
Latency mode Low-latency optimization is unavailable at 4K/2160p YouTube says 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency.

These figures are from YouTube’s English-language settings page. Other regional versions have displayed different figures, including a 50 Mbps recommended H.264 bitrate in one locale. Check the current settings page applicable to your region and avoid mixing values from different versions.

Configure the workflow you choose

OBS Studio: scene-based production

  1. Build the scene first. Add and arrange the sources you actually need—such as gameplay capture, a camera, overlays, and audio—and check their levels and composition.
  2. Open Settings and configure the stream. Choose the YouTube service and provide the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a recording or share it.
  3. Set the output for the intended codec and resolution. For YouTube’s English-language 4K60 H.264 guidance, use CBR, 35 Mbps, and a two-second keyframe interval. If you select AV1 or H.265, consult the corresponding 10–40 Mbps published range and ensure your chosen encoder and workflow support that combination.
  4. Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the protocol and stream configuration in Live Control Room and in the selected OBS service settings.
  5. Test before the event. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, or network instability.

OBS documents an HDR workflow for OBS 30.1 or later using a supported hardware HEVC encoder and HDR color settings. This is not a general-purpose shortcut for turning an SDR production into HDR: the source and hardware must support the HDR workflow, and the YouTube stream configuration must be compatible.

FFmpeg: scripted media pipeline

  1. Identify every stage of the pipeline. Confirm the input source, any required filtering, the encoder and codec, output resolution and frame rate, audio handling, and YouTube ingest destination before building the command.
  2. Use YouTube’s matching encoder targets. For 4K60 H.264, YouTube’s English-language guidance lists CBR, 35 Mbps recommended, and a two-second keyframe interval. For AV1 or H.265, its listed range is 10–40 Mbps. Verify that the FFmpeg build and selected encoder support the intended codec and settings.
  3. Use the supported ingest protocol. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Confirm the current endpoint and key in YouTube Live Control Room, and protect the stream key as a credential.
  4. Validate the command on the target machine. Start with a test rather than an event, confirm that the stream reaches YouTube at the intended resolution and frame rate, and check both encoder load and network behavior.
  5. Inspect YouTube’s stream health. Test with representative motion and sound. If the output is unstable, isolate whether the issue is encoding capacity, the input/filter pipeline, or the network before changing settings.

There is no verified universal FFmpeg command for every current build, encoder, and YouTube workflow in this article. Build-specific options and protocol support can vary, so check the documentation for the FFmpeg build and encoder you are actually using rather than relying on a copied command.

SDR and HDR need different decisions

For SDR

YouTube’s published live guidance lists Rec. 709 color and 8-bit for SDR. Choose and maintain the SDR path consistently through the source, encoder, and stream settings.

For HDR

YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies 10-bit and recommends H.265/HEVC; its published live settings say AV1 is not supported for HDR. OBS’s documented HDR instructions require OBS 30.1 or later, a supported hardware HEVC encoder, and HDR color settings. Check source, hardware, codec, and stream-key or protocol configuration in Live Control Room before relying on HDR output. Devices without HDR support show the stream in SDR.

Do not assume an ordinary SDR setup becomes HDR by changing a color dropdown. If any part of the source-to-encoder chain cannot supply or preserve the required HDR format, use an SDR configuration instead.

Preflight: test the whole chain

  • Choose OBS for a scene-based live production or FFmpeg for a scripted pipeline.
  • Check the current YouTube encoder settings page for your region and selected codec. The English-language 4K60 H.264 entry lists 35 Mbps as its recommended bitrate.
  • Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below four seconds.
  • Prefer RTMPS where supported, and confirm the stream configuration in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Test with motion and audio representative of the real stream. Review stream-health messages rather than assuming that a successful connection means a healthy stream.
  • Watch dropped frames, encoder load, and network stability on the target machine. A test on different hardware or a different connection may not predict the event.
  • If streaming HDR, verify the separate source, bit-depth, codec, encoder, and color-setting requirements before going live.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Stream health reports bitrate or connection problems

Check the outgoing bitrate against the selected codec’s YouTube guidance and assess whether the connection can sustain the stream. A nominal upload-speed result alone does not establish stable performance during the stream. Test again under representative conditions and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.

Dropped frames appear

Determine whether frames are being dropped by the network or during encoding. Check YouTube’s health feedback, encoder load, and network stability; reduce load or resolve connection instability, then repeat the test. Do not treat 4K60 as achievable solely because the output resolution and frame rate are selectable.

The stream connects but does not appear in the expected format

Verify the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, stream key, and protocol in the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. For HDR, also verify the 10-bit path, HEVC recommendation, supported hardware encoder, HDR source, and compatible color settings.

HDR looks like SDR on some devices

YouTube notes that devices without HDR support show the stream in SDR. Confirm HDR on a capable device before concluding that the encoder failed, and check that the source and entire output chain were configured for HDR.

FFmpeg behaves differently from a copied command

Check the FFmpeg build and selected encoder: available options and protocol/codec combinations can depend on them. Consult documentation for that build and validate a minimal test pipeline before adding filters or other complexity.
