If OBS Studio lags after 30 minutes of recording, the timing alone does not identify the cause. First check whether the OBS preview is stuttering, the saved recording is choppy, or playback is struggling—and inspect OBS Statistics and the log from that session. Those clues help distinguish rendering load from encoding overload and point to the right fix.
Why does OBS start lagging when I record?
OBS does not identify a unique failure that begins at the 30-minute mark. Its troubleshooting guide describes choppy or laggy output as a resource problem that can involve rendering or encoding workload; the time elapsed is a useful clue for reproducing the issue, not proof of overheating, storage failure, or another specific fault. OBS recommends freeing resources and adjusting settings rather than assuming one cause. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide was published June 12, 2021.

Before changing settings, open View > Stats in OBS and note what it reports during the affected session. Check whether the preview itself stutters, whether the finished recording is choppy, and whether Statistics shows rendering or encoding problems. Also consider whether you are watching the file in a demanding playback application: playback stutter does not, by itself, establish that OBS recorded badly.

Try these five fixes in order
Use the statistics and log to guide the first change. If rendering appears to be the issue, prioritize GPU headroom and scene load; if encoding is the issue, reduce output workload or review the encoder. Change one thing at a time, then make a test recording long enough to see whether the same symptom returns.
1. On Windows, run OBS as administrator
Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, and choose Run as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick fix that may help with GPU overload; it is a test, not a guarantee. This instruction is specifically for Windows. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
2. Free up GPU capacity
Close programs you know are using substantial GPU resources. If you are recording a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync; if needed, lower the game’s graphics settings. An uncapped game can use so much GPU capacity that OBS has too little left for scene compositing. Apply changes selectively so you can identify which one helps. 3. Reduce output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and try a lower output resolution or frame rate. If recording at 60 fps is not working reliably, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. Lower resolution reduces image detail; lower frame rate makes motion less smooth. The right compromise depends on what you record and how much performance headroom is available. 4. Simplify scenes and sources
Remove or reduce costly sources and filters, use smaller source dimensions when that is suitable, and reduce or resize browser sources. Browser sources can be resource-intensive, and OBS notes that sources may continue using resources even when hidden. Simplifying a scene can help with rendering load without requiring a change to the recording encoder. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
5. Review the recording encoder and quality preset
Open Settings > Output and review the recording encoder and quality preset. If a compatible hardware encoder is available on your system, it can generally move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; availability and performance depend on your platform and hardware. Try a less demanding quality configuration and compare both smoothness and file size. OBS warns that its Indistinguishable preset can create larger files and affect performance on older or weaker hardware. Avoid choosing Lossless casually: OBS says this CPU-encoder preset produces around 7 GB of data per minute of video, a figure stated by the OBS Project in its recording preset guide published September 14, 2023. Match the fix to the likely bottleneck
| What you observe | First changes to test | Tradeoff or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering trouble or a stuttering preview | Free GPU capacity; simplify scenes and sources; consider lowering output resolution or frame rate. | Lower game settings, resolution, or frame rate may reduce visual detail or motion smoothness. |
| Encoding trouble or an encoding-overloaded message | Reduce output workload; review the encoder and quality preset; consider a compatible hardware encoder. | Hardware-encoder availability and performance vary by platform and hardware. Less demanding quality settings can change the recording’s quality or file size. |
| The OBS preview looks fine, but the saved file stutters | Check OBS Statistics and the affected session’s log for encoding clues; test the file in another playback application. | A demanding player can make playback choppy, so playback alone does not establish a recording fault. |
| Only the symptom’s timing is clear | Reproduce the issue, note when it starts, and inspect Statistics and the session log before changing settings. | The 30-minute timing does not establish a particular cause. |
When to ask for help
If the problem remains after targeted tests, share the OBS log from the affected recording session when seeking support, along with whether the preview, saved file, or playback stuttered and what Statistics showed. Include your platform and hardware context so advice about encoders or system resources can be relevant. The cited OBS guidance supports configuration checks; it does not establish that this symptom alone calls for a hardware purchase.
