For a 24/7 YouTube stream from OBS, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and stereo AAC audio. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, but that is a platform recommendation—not a guarantee your connection can sustain it. In India, measure the actual upload available to the streaming computer and leave 20% headroom; if the connection or encoder cannot hold the target reliably, use 720p30 instead.
Recommended OBS starting settings
Use this as a baseline for an ordinary SDR stream, then test it on the specific computer and internet connection that will run the broadcast. YouTube’s settings guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; its bitrate figures depend on both codec and output mode.
| Setting | Starting value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 at 30 fps | Step down to 1280×720 at 30 fps if the encoder or sustained upload cannot support 1080p30 reliably. |
| Video codec | H.264 | Use H.264 figures only when the encoder is actually sending H.264. YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 | YouTube lists 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for this mode. If using 720p30, it lists 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | These are YouTube’s listed stereo AAC guidance values; encoder menus may use different labels. |
| Color for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use the corresponding options available in OBS or the selected hardware encoder. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. |
In OBS, the names and locations of encoder options can vary by OBS version, operating system and whether you use a software or hardware encoder. Match the output to the properties above rather than assuming every menu uses identical labels. YouTube recommends default stream resolution detection; set a manual resolution only when you have a reason and the stream configuration supports it.
Choose bitrate from the actual upload connection
YouTube’s recommended H.264 figures are not a measurement of Indian broadband or mobile service. Test sustained upload at the place and time the stream will run. Do not use the advertised download speed or an ISP plan’s maximum upload rate as a substitute. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream.

H.264 bitrate guidance from YouTube
| Output mode | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
These values are YouTube’s current H.264 platform recommendations, accessed in 2026. They do not apply automatically to AV1 or H.265/HEVC, for which YouTube publishes separate values. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance is the reference for the codec and output mode you choose.
YouTube advises leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth as headroom. For example, a 14 Mbps video bitrate alone implies at least 17.5 Mbps of measured sustained upload if applying that 20% margin; audio and any other outgoing traffic also consume capacity. Choose a lower resolution or frame rate if testing shows the connection cannot keep that margin consistently. A wired Ethernet connection is worth considering where practical, but it does not guarantee uptime.

Configure the YouTube stream and OBS credentials
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream and open the Live Control Room. Select the stream configuration that matches the content and output you intend to send.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming configuration. The stream key acts like a password: it directs the encoder feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it private.
- Use YouTube’s default resolution detection unless you have a specific reason to set resolution manually. Confirm any manual choice is supported by the stream key and settings in use.
- Start a test broadcast and check the Live Control Room preview, stream health and messages. Confirm that the watch page is accessible before relying on the stream.
If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the stream URL and key workflow.
Test continuity before leaving the stream unattended
A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than the encoder settings: the computer, power, network, ISP and YouTube ingest all matter. Test with audio and movement similar to the real content, then watch the preview and health indicators long enough to catch instability under expected conditions.

- Measure upload at the actual location and during likely operating hours; shared networks may have less available upstream capacity.
- Check that audio is present and in sync, and that moving content looks stable at the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room, and verify the public watch page works.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player rolls over to the backup.
A second encoder, network cable or power backup can reduce some risks, but none guarantees uninterrupted service. Internet, ISP, electricity, computer and platform failures can still interrupt a broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend an upload speed test and describe leaving bandwidth headroom and testing failover.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for streams over 12 hours. If you need a complete on-demand copy, do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will create one. Record a local backup and verify that it is complete, or divide the broadcast into shorter sessions and check each resulting archive. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and DVR documentation.

Choose latency for the kind of stream
For ambient or unattended programming with little audience interaction, normal latency is a sensible starting point. YouTube explains that lower latency can increase playback buffering; low and ultra-low latency are aimed at more interactive streams, and neither supports 4K. This is a use-case choice, not a special 24/7 requirement. Check YouTube’s latency guidance before changing the setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.India-specific considerations
YouTube’s published encoder recommendations do not provide a special India-only OBS preset, regional upload benchmark or India-specific ingest bitrate. The platform settings are the same guidance; the connection and power conditions must be checked where the streaming computer will operate. Measure sustained upstream capacity and preserve headroom rather than relying on an advertised plan speed.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports unstable bitrate or the video buffers | Outgoing bitrate is too close to, or above, sustained upload capacity; other devices may be using the shared connection. | Repeat an upload test at the streaming location and time of use. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, reduce bitrate or move to 720p30 if needed, and limit competing uploads. |
| YouTube does not accept the encoder feed | The stream URL or key may be wrong, stale or reset. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room into OBS. If the key may be compromised, reset it and replace the saved OBS value. |
| Preview is missing or the wrong resolution appears | Manual resolution selection may not match the stream configuration, or the feed has not been detected as expected. | Use default resolution detection as YouTube recommends, or verify that the manually selected output and stream settings agree. |
| Video quality fluctuates despite a high bitrate setting | The connection or encoder may not sustain the chosen profile. | Test actual sustained upload and encoder stability, then lower the resolution or frame rate rather than forcing the highest setting. |
| There is no complete archive after a 24-hour stream | YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable. | Use and verify a local recording, or run shorter sessions and verify the archive for each. |
| Playback buffers after selecting low latency | YouTube notes that lower latency may increase buffering. | For a stream where immediate interaction is not important, try normal latency and check viewer playback. |
Copyright and reused-content checks for continuous programming
Before scheduling a loop or playlist, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and its music. Continuous availability does not change YouTube’s copyright rules. Also consider whether a channel built around repetitive or reused material meets YouTube’s channel monetization policies; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Review the copyright safety checklist before putting a playlist on air.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS keeps the stream dependent on the computer and connection running it. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not going live from a camera. See StreamNeo or plans and pricing. To try the first day, start a StreamNeo account.
