Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a YouTube ocean-waves stream, start with OBS set to CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, H.264, and a bitrate matched to your resolution and frame rate: YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, or 4 Mbps for 720p30. For stereo audio, use AAC, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of stable 24/7 operation: test the complete scene, check stream health, and plan to monitor the computer and connection.
Recommended OBS settings for an ocean-waves stream
Use the settings below as a starting point, then test them with your actual footage, audio, encoder, and upload connection. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate; do not pick a higher setting just because the computer offers it.
| OBS setting | Starting value | How to choose or qualify it |
|---|---|---|
| Service and protocol | YouTube; RTMPS when available | YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | A broadly supported starting point. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; use those only if your OBS version and computer encoder support them. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Video bitrate | 1080p30: 10 Mbps 720p60: 6 Mbps 720p30: 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations, not required internet-plan speeds or guarantees. Select a rate your encoder and upload connection can sustain. |
| Audio encoder | AAC | YouTube also lists MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS. Stereo ocean audio ordinarily does not need 5.1. |
| Stereo audio rate | 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps | YouTube’s recommended advanced settings for stereo. |
| Reconnect | Enable automatic reconnect | Choose a sensible retry interval for your setup; OBS documentation does not establish a universal interval. |
| Latency | Normal | Usually reasonable for ambient footage without live interaction. Lower latency can increase playback buffering and matters less when you do not need to interact with viewers. |
YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple playback formats, so you generally do not need to send separate encodes for different viewer resolutions.
Choose resolution and frame rate for your footage
Start with the source and the system
Compare the resolution and motion in your ocean footage with your computer’s encoding capacity and the upload bitrate you can sustain. If the source is 720p, sending a 1080p encode does not restore detail that is not in the recording. For a mostly static ocean view, 30 fps is a reasonable first test; that is a content-based starting point, not a YouTube rule.

When 60 fps is worth testing
Try 60 fps when the motion detail in the footage benefits from it and both the encoder and connection can sustain the recommended rate. For the H.264 options listed here, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps at 720p60 versus 4 Mbps at 720p30. Use the test stream to judge the actual result rather than assuming the higher frame rate will look better in every scene.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
OBS labels and available encoder choices can vary by version and computer. The following workflow focuses on the settings that determine the outgoing stream; it does not assume a particular CPU or GPU model.

- Prepare the scene. In OBS, add the ocean video as a source in a scene and confirm it fills the canvas as intended. Make sure the video and its audio play together and loop as intended. Listen for gaps, clicks, clipping, silence, or unintended microphone or desktop audio. The exact source-loop controls depend on the source type and OBS version.
- Open the stream settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key provided by YouTube’s Live Control Room. Use RTMPS when available.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the key in OBS.
- Set video output. In Settings > Output, select an available H.264 encoder and set rate control to CBR, the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and the bitrate that matches your chosen resolution and frame rate. If OBS exposes a profile or preset option, use an available setting your computer can encode continuously; the sources do not establish one universal preset for this workload.
- Set the canvas and output resolution. In Settings > Video, set the output to the resolution you intend to stream. Use 30 fps for the first test unless the footage’s motion and system capacity justify testing 60 fps.
- Set stereo audio. In Settings > Audio, set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz. In the audio output settings, use AAC and 128 kbps for stereo when those controls are available.
- Enable recovery behavior. In the OBS advanced or connection settings, enable automatic reconnect and select a retry interval appropriate to your connection. There is no source-established universal interval.
- Choose latency in YouTube’s live setup. Use Normal latency for a non-interactive ambient stream unless you have a specific reason to favor lower latency.
- Start a test and inspect the result. Use an unlisted or private test with similar footage and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then confirm playback from the channel’s watch page and on a mobile device.
Prepare for continuous operation
OBS settings alone cannot keep a stream live through every computer, power, internet, source-media, or platform interruption. A 24/7 schedule needs a working source and ongoing attention to the encoder and stream status.
Preflight checklist
- Confirm the ocean video and sound remain present, synchronized, and loop as intended; listen for silence, clipping, clicks, and gaps.
- Run a speed test and choose a bitrate the upload connection can sustain with headroom. YouTube advises, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” The available guidance does not establish a universal percentage of spare bandwidth.
- Run an unlisted or private test using similar motion and audio. Review the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before relying on the public broadcast.
- Check the channel watch page and a mobile playback device. If you are keeping a local archive, verify that the file is growing and inspect its integrity.
- Enable OBS automatic reconnect and arrange a way to monitor the computer, connection, audio, and YouTube stream status.
YouTube’s encoder tips recommend configuring an encoder at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting it 15 minutes beforehand. For a continuous ambient broadcast, the practical lesson is to allow time for a full preview and troubleshooting before depending on the stream.

Copyright, reused footage, and recordings
Use footage and audio you have the rights to stream. A looping ocean video is not automatically cleared for broadcast merely because it is ambient or available online; check the actual license and any conditions on both the video and sound. These setup recommendations do not establish whether a particular channel or recording is eligible for monetization, or what YouTube will do with a specific stream.
Do not assume that a 24/7 broadcast will be archived indefinitely or that a particular restart schedule preserves its recording. The available guidance here does not establish a maximum continuous-stream duration, archive-retention period, or restart interval. If an archive matters, verify current YouTube behavior for your channel and monitor the recording rather than relying on an assumed duration.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports unstable delivery or the picture buffers | Whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate; whether bitrate is set to CBR; whether the encoder is keeping up. | Run a speed test, reduce the output bitrate or choose a lower resolution/frame rate, then test again. Do not treat the recommended bitrate as proof that your connection can sustain it. |
| The stream disconnects | Internet and computer continuity, OBS reconnect settings, and the current stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. | Enable OBS automatic reconnect, choose a sensible retry interval, and restore the feed if the underlying computer or connection has stopped. Reconnect cannot fix a failed source, powered-off PC, or lost internet connection. |
| Audio is silent, clipped, or has clicks | The source’s audio playback, OBS audio meters, sample rate, and accidental microphone or desktop-audio capture. | Correct the source or mixer problem, remove unintended inputs, and repeat the test while listening on the watch page and a mobile device. |
| The stream key no longer works | Whether the key in OBS matches the active key in YouTube Live Control Room. | Copy the active key into OBS. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before updating OBS. |
| The video does not loop as expected | The selected source type and its loop or playback behavior in your OBS version. | Test the complete loop before going public. Confirm both picture and sound restart cleanly and that no unintended audio source takes over. |
| Viewers report quality problems despite a healthy-looking preview | Playback on the actual channel watch page and on a second device, alongside YouTube stream-health messages. | Allow time for YouTube’s viewer-side transcoding, then compare playback at available qualities. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats; the incoming feed still needs to be stable. |
