If OBS says “YouTube server disconnected,” first check its connection indicator and dropped-frames counter. A rising dropped-frames count or a yellow/red indicator usually points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Lower the bitrate, then check the server route, network and security software, and YouTube stream settings one at a time. The message alone does not identify the cause.
What “YouTube server disconnected” means
In this message, “server” means the streaming service’s ingest server—the endpoint receiving your video—not an OBS server. OBS says the stream connects directly from your computer to the service; it does not pass through OBS Project servers. A disconnect therefore does not, by itself, mean OBS is down. See OBS Help.
Possible causes include an unstable internet route, a bitrate that exceeds what the connection can sustain, a problematic ingest-server route, local network or ISP conditions, VPN or security-software interference, or an incorrect YouTube stream key or URL. Without an OBS log, YouTube stream-health details, and information about your network and settings, there is no reliable way to identify which one is responsible.
Fix it in a controlled order
Change one thing at a time where possible, then observe whether the connection indicator and dropped-frames count improve. That makes it easier to identify the layer that is failing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check OBS’s connection indicators. Watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator when the problem occurs. Rising dropped frames with a yellow or red indicator supports a network-path or sustainable-bitrate problem; it does not prove which network component is at fault. OBS says dropped frames of this kind are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the indicators.
- Reduce the video bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower Video Bitrate. OBS’s general troubleshooting guide suggests starting at 75% of total measured upload speed. Treat that as a diagnostic starting point, not a guarantee: available upload capacity can vary, and YouTube has its own recommendations. Compare the result with YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Try a different ingest server if OBS exposes the setting. In OBS, check Settings → Stream and select another available server. If the connection improves, that suggests a route-specific difference; it does not establish that the original server was down globally. The option and labels can vary by service and encoder setup.
- Isolate the local network and software. If you can do so, test with a wired Ethernet connection to see whether Wi-Fi instability is involved. OBS also identifies VPN and security software, including firewalls, as possible sources of interference. If you suspect one, temporarily disable it only for a controlled test. Restore protection afterward; if the test supports interference, use a narrow OBS exception rather than leaving protection off. A wired test or security-software change will not fix every ISP, route, key, or bitrate problem.
- Verify the YouTube stream configuration. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that OBS is using the intended stream and its current key. Treat the stream key like a password. If it may have been exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it and update the encoder. For an RTMPS problem, verify that the server URL is the correct RTMPS endpoint and that the encoder supports RTMPS; YouTube also documents port 443 guidance for some SSL errors. See YouTube stream settings and its RTMPS guide.
- Test and monitor before going live. Run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and event. If the issue persists after checking the encoder and local network, OBS’s troubleshooting guide recommends contacting your internet service provider.
Choose a bitrate and keyframe interval that fit YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s encoder recommendations checked on 2026-10-03 list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; and CBR. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate table varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, the listed recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that bitrate alone caused a particular disconnect. Check the current table for your actual output mode before changing settings: YouTube encoder settings.
OBS’s guide, dated 2024-09-30, also discusses options such as binding to an IP address, testing IPv4-only, and dynamic bitrate adjustment. These are not universal first steps: availability depends on platform and setup, and dynamic bitrate may reduce quality without correcting the underlying network problem. Consult the current OBS troubleshooting guide before using platform-specific options.

If the disconnect keeps happening
- Note when the disconnect occurs and whether the dropped-frames count rises at the same time.
- Check YouTube stream health and its messages, then compare them with the OBS connection indicators.
- Retest after each change—bitrate, server, network connection, software, or stream configuration—rather than changing several settings together.
- If the evidence still points to a connection problem, share the relevant OBS log and YouTube stream-health details with your ISP or the appropriate support team. The exact error alone is not enough to diagnose a route or provider fault.
Do not assume reinstalling OBS, changing DNS, buying networking hardware, or permanently disabling security software is a general fix. A Cat 6 cable is useful only if you need one to test a wired connection; it cannot by itself fix an ISP route, stream key, YouTube-side issue, or unsustainable bitrate.
