To diagnose a failed 24/7 YouTube stream, inspect the OBS log from the session in which the failure happened, then compare its timestamps with OBS Statistics and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. An analyzer can flag common problems, but its results are leads—not proof of a root cause. Without the affected session’s log and matching YouTube evidence, the specific cause cannot be established.
1. Get the OBS log that contains the failure
A log only records the OBS session it represents. If the stream failed during a session that is no longer open, do not substitute a log from a later session: it cannot show what happened during the failure.

- In OBS, select Help → Log Files → Upload Last Log File for a finished session.
- For the currently open session, select Help → Log Files → Upload Current Log File.
- Keep the resulting log URL and note the approximate failure time, time zone, OBS version, operating system, stream settings, and what viewers saw. These details help match log events to platform symptoms.

2. Analyze the log, but treat flags as leads
Open the OBS Log Analyzer and submit the log URL. The analyzer reviews logs for common issues and suggests areas to check. A warning does not, by itself, prove that the flagged condition caused the stream failure.

Use the log timeline to find events around the reported failure, then compare them with OBS’s counters and YouTube’s stream-health messages from the same period. The useful question is not simply “What did the analyzer flag?” but “Does that clue match the timing and symptoms?”
3. Separate network drops from local rendering or encoding problems
In OBS, open View → Stats and inspect the counters during the affected workload. Dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag point toward different parts of the path. Do not treat every kind of lag as a network problem.

OBS says of dropped frames specifically: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns dropped frames; it does not rule out an OBS crash, encoder overload, or another type of failure. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guidance.

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the stream-health messages that coincide with the OBS log and Stats counters. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Use the current YouTube live encoder settings for the stream’s actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; recommended bitrates vary by those settings.

For one specific configuration, YouTube lists 1080p at 60 fps, H.264: 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. This is YouTube’s guidance for that configuration, not a universal bitrate for 24/7 streaming or evidence of what caused a particular failure. YouTube’s settings also specify RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, H.264/H.265/AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
Check the stream key and destination if the log or Live Control Room indicates an invalid key or ingest destination. YouTube describes the stream key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Verify the configured URL and key in Studio; if the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.

5. Change one plausible cause at a time
When evidence points to an unstable connection, OBS recommends trying another server or lowering the video bitrate. Choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain reliably, not merely one that matches a peak speed test. Check VPN and security-software interference as well.
YouTube’s streaming tips say: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” YouTube further advises accounting for primary and backup streams plus that margin within available upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Write down the suspected cause and the evidence supporting it.
- Change only the relevant setting or condition—for example, ingest server or bitrate if the evidence is network-related.
- Reproduce the affected workload rather than testing only an idle setup.
- Compare the next session’s OBS log, Stats counters, YouTube health messages, and archive or playback result.
If multiple conditions change at once, it becomes harder to tell which one mattered. A fix is better supported when the same symptom disappears alongside the indicator that implicated the cause.
6. What can and cannot be concluded from an OBS log
A log can document events and configuration from its OBS session, and the analyzer can surface common issues. It cannot establish what happened in a different session, and a single clue may not identify the specific failed component. To assign a supported cause, match the affected-session log to OBS counters and YouTube’s contemporaneous health messages. No failure-rate statistic is established by the guidance cited here.
