OBS Studio is not only for livestreaming. It is a flexible recording and presentation workspace that can capture your screen, a single window, a game, a webcam or an external video feed; combine those inputs into reusable scenes; mix and clean up audio; and send a finished scene to any webcam-capable meeting application. If you make tutorials, record lessons, demonstrate software, preserve a recent moment or present from one composed layout, OBS can replace several simpler utilities.
What OBS can do without a livestream
OBS works around scenes and sources. A scene is a saved layout, while sources are the pieces inside it. You can combine Display Capture, Window Capture, Video Capture Device (such as a webcam), images, text, media files and capture-card input, then resize, reorder, hide or filter each item.

That makes OBS useful whenever the output needs more than a plain screen recording. A tutorial can show an application window, a small camera view and on-screen labels. A product demonstration can switch between a title card, the software being demonstrated and a closing screen. A lesson can combine slides, a document camera and a microphone without rebuilding the layout each time.

Screen recordings and tutorials
Create a scene, add Display Capture for an entire monitor or Window Capture for one application, then add a webcam, image, text or media source if needed. In the Controls dock, review Output settings and select Start Recording. A short test recording is worth making before a long lesson: it confirms that the intended window, microphone and desktop audio are actually being captured.

Presentations and software demonstrations
Use separate scenes for layouts such as “intro,” “desktop,” “demo” and “closing.” Scene and source hotkeys let you change layouts or show and hide elements while speaking, so you do not need to edit every transition afterward. Because sources remain independently adjustable, you can move a camera box, replace an image or mute a media element without redesigning the whole scene.
Voiceovers and recorded lessons
The Audio Mixer combines microphone and desktop audio. Filters documented by OBS include gain, noise suppression and noise gate: gain adjusts level, suppression can reduce steady background noise, and a gate can keep quieter room sound below a chosen threshold. A USB microphone is a practical accessory, but OBS does not require a particular model.
A composed camera feed for meetings
Virtual Camera exposes an OBS output as a webcam to compatible applications. You can choose the Program, Preview, a Scene or an individual Source output, depending on whether the recipient should see the live composition, a preview layout or one selected element. The result is useful for presentations and demonstrations that need slides, a camera and labels in one feed.

Browser-based slides, dashboards and overlays
Browser Source is an embedded browser available in official OBS packages for Windows, macOS and Linux. It can load a URL or a local file and render web-based layouts, images, video and audio. That enables dashboards, web demonstrations, custom slides and animated overlays inside the same scene system. Treat a local file as a dependable fallback when an internet page may change or become unavailable.

Replay Buffer and quick capture
Replay Buffer continuously retains a recent segment after you enable it. Hotkeys can start, stop and save the buffer, allowing you to preserve a moment after it happens without keeping a conventional broadcast running. Set the buffer duration and storage location before relying on it, and verify that your drive has room for the selected quality.
How to set up OBS for a first recording
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard so OBS can propose initial settings for your hardware.
- Create a scene and add the sources you need: Display Capture or Window Capture, plus optional camera, image, text, media or capture-card sources.
- Open the Audio Mixer and confirm that the intended microphone and desktop-audio meters move when you speak or play sound.
- Adjust filters from a source’s audio properties if the recording needs level control, noise suppression or a noise gate.
- Review Output settings, including the recording format, encoder and quality choices available on your system.
- Record a short sample, play it back and check framing, sync, readable text, microphone level and desktop audio before making the full recording.
Hardware and operating-system requirements
OBS lists these baseline requirements:
| Platform | Baseline listed by OBS |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU |
| macOS | macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later on Intel or Apple Silicon, with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU |
| Linux/Unix | An OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU plus X Window System or Wayland |
These are compatibility baselines, not performance guarantees. Encoder choice, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity all affect whether a particular computer can record smoothly. Multiple animated browser sources, high-resolution capture and several filters can demand considerably more processing than a simple single-window recording.
Useful accessories, and when they matter
- USB webcam: supplies a Video Capture Device source and can also be included in a Virtual Camera composition.
- USB microphone: can provide a cleaner, more controllable voice track than a built-in laptop microphone.
- USB video capture card: brings an external video feed into OBS as a capture source.
None of these accessories is required for basic screen recording. Start with the hardware you already have, then add equipment only when a specific limitation—framing, voice quality or external-video input—justifies it.
Where OBS is a better fit than a simpler recorder
Choose OBS when you need several of these controls in one workflow: many input types, reusable scene composition, audio mixing and filters, hotkey automation, browser or local-file integration, virtual-camera output, or capture-card support. A simpler recorder may be faster for a one-off full-screen clip, but it generally offers less control over layered layouts and live switching. OBS’s flexibility also means more settings to check, so a short test recording is part of the normal workflow rather than an optional extra.

Common problems and fixes
The recording shows the wrong thing
Check whether you used Display Capture or Window Capture, confirm the selected monitor or application, and make sure the source is visible in the Sources list. If a window is covered or minimized, test the capture again with it plainly visible.
The microphone is missing or too quiet
Confirm the selected input in OBS’s audio settings, watch the mixer meter while speaking and adjust gain only until speech is clear without clipping. A short playback test catches muted or incorrect devices early.
The video stutters
Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify animated scenes and review the encoder choice. OBS’s minimum operating-system and GPU requirements do not account for every combination of capture workload and scene complexity.

A browser source is blank
Verify the URL or local-file path, check that the content works in a normal browser and allow time for the page to load. For important presentations, keep a locally stored alternative so a network or page change does not interrupt the scene.
