Choose Wordle if you like narrowing down a five-letter answer within a fixed number of guesses; choose Connections if you enjoy spotting categories and testing associations; choose Strands if you prefer searching a letter grid for words tied to a theme. They are different kinds of puzzles, not three versions of the same challenge.
How the three NYT word games work
| Game | Main task | What the official description establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Wordle | Guess a word | Find a five-letter word in six tries or fewer. NYT Games app listing |
| Connections | Group words | Sort 16 words into four groups of four based on shared themes. Groups are color-coded from yellow, described as easiest, to purple, described as trickiest. NYT Help Center: Connections |
| Strands | Search a grid | Find hidden words and uncover the day’s theme; NYT describes it as a classic word search with a twist. NYT Games app listing |
Which game fits the way you like to think?
Choose Wordle for deduction within a limit
Wordle suits players who enjoy proposing possible answers, using feedback to refine their thinking, and working within a clear six-guess limit. The documented rules establish the five-letter answer and number of tries; the official sources cited here do not spell out the detailed letter-color feedback rules.

Choose Connections for associations and category theories
Connections is a fit if you like noticing relationships among words and testing which ones form a category. Its challenge comes partly from overlap: a word can seem to belong to more than one group. NYT says the puzzle has exactly one solution and that editors curate its words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. NYT Help Center: Connections

Choose Strands for visual scanning around a theme
Strands is the natural choice if you enjoy looking across a letter grid for words connected by a daily theme. That is the scope of the official description cited here; it does not establish detailed rules for hints, the grid, or a spangram. NYT Games app listing
