NYT Strands vs. Connections: Which Daily Word Puzzle Is Right for You?

Choose Connections if you like sorting words into shared categories, spotting misleading overlaps, and solving a compact deduction challenge. Choose Strands if you prefer tracing words through a visual grid, using a theme to guide the search, and discovering a defining spangram. Both daily puzzles are free; a New York Times Games subscription is mainly useful for archives, saved cross-device progress, statistics, and other subscriber tools.

The short answer

Connections and Strands are both daily word games, but they ask your brain to work in different ways. Connections presents 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. Strands presents a 6×8 letter grid and asks you to trace theme-related words through adjacent letters, including one special word called the spangram.

Choose If you prefer What can frustrate you
Connections Semantic association, elimination, red herrings and a quick deduction round Several words may appear to fit more than one category, and mistakes are limited
Strands Visual searching, letter paths, theme inference and discovering a spangram Hidden paths can remain invisible while the theme is still unclear

There is no published head-to-head statistic proving that one is harder or faster. Difficulty depends on whether category reasoning or spatial word searching suits you better.

How Connections works

The basic solving loop

Connections gives you a bank of words. Your job is to identify four groups of four words that share a meaningful relationship. The relationship might be a category, a phrase pattern, a type of object or another word-based connection. You select a proposed group and submit it; the result tells you whether the grouping is correct, allowing you to reassess the remaining words.

  1. Read all 16 words before committing to a theory.
  2. Circle mentally—or note privately—sets that appear to share a category.
  3. Look for a fourth word that completes a possible group, while checking whether any word has a stronger alternate home.
  4. Submit the group and use the result to eliminate possibilities from the remaining board.

The central skill is not simply knowing words. It is judging which relationship the puzzle setter intends when a word could plausibly belong to several groups.

Mistakes, wins and pressure

Connections uses a limited-mistake structure. The official help page defines a win as completing the puzzle in fewer than four mistakes. That makes every speculative submission a trade-off: a guess may reveal information, but it also consumes part of your margin for error.

This structure creates a compact deduction experience. You can often make progress by locking in a highly distinctive group, then using the result to expose a red herring in another group. A category that feels obvious is not necessarily safe if one of its words also supports a more precise category elsewhere.

Stats, badges and sharing

The game supports sharing, statistics and badges. The statistics view records wins according to the mistake-based rules, while the share feature lets you report a result without revealing the answers. A subscriber archive is also available, so you can revisit earlier puzzles instead of waiting for the next daily release.

How Strands works

The 6×8 grid

Strands uses a 6×8 letter grid, for 48 letters in total. Theme words are traced through adjacent letters. A path can change direction as it moves, so a word is not restricted to a straight line or a single turn. The complete board uses all 48 letters.

That layout changes the nature of a clue. You are looking for both a word and a route through the board. A familiar theme word may still be difficult to enter if its letters are separated by an invalid gap or if a nearby path creates a tempting false trail.

The theme and the spangram

Each puzzle has a theme that points toward the intended vocabulary. The most important special answer is the spangram: a word or phrase that expresses the puzzle’s theme and spans opposite edges of the grid. Finding it can make the rest of the board easier because it reveals the setter’s interpretation of the theme and divides the visual search area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strands therefore combines two kinds of inference. You infer what the theme means, then search for connected letter paths that satisfy it. When you are stuck, thinking about the spangram is often more productive than scanning every unused letter at random.

What a typical solve feels like

Strands is more exploratory than Connections. You may trace a candidate word, discover that it does not fit the theme, and then reuse the visual information from that path to inspect neighboring letters. The board gives you spatial clues that do not exist in a flat list of words, but it can also hide an answer in an unexpected bend.

The daily puzzle is free to play on the New York Times site. An independent rules guide describes the daily game as using the same 6×8 structure, connected paths and spangram concept, while the official back catalog is tied to a Games subscription.

Is Strands harder than Connections?

There is no published Strands-versus-Connections difficulty or completion-time statistic in the cited official materials. Calling one universally harder would therefore overstate the evidence.

Connections feels harder when you are comfortable spotting words but less comfortable deciding which relationship is intentional. Its red herrings are semantic: a word can be correct in isolation yet wrong for the final partition. The mistake limit makes uncertainty costly.

Strands feels harder when visual search and theme inference are not your strengths. You must recognize a likely answer, locate its letters, and confirm that the path uses adjacent cells. A difficult theme can delay every later discovery, while an early spangram can clarify the entire board.

Your own error pattern is a better guide than a generic ranking. If you routinely see categories but submit the wrong grouping, Connections may demand more deliberate checking. If you identify theme words but cannot find their routes, Strands may need more patient scanning.

Which puzzle is better for your daily break?

Choose Connections when you want a compact logic challenge

  • You enjoy sorting, classification and finding a precise relationship among ordinary words.
  • You like a clear submission-and-feedback loop rather than an open-ended search.
  • You enjoy the tension of limited mistakes and the satisfaction of eliminating a red herring.
  • You want to compare results with friends through a familiar share format.

Connections is especially suitable when you have a few uninterrupted minutes and want a puzzle whose state is easy to describe: four groups, four categories, and a mistake margin.

Choose Strands when you want a visual word hunt

  • You prefer moving through a board instead of scanning a list.
  • You like a theme that gradually reveals the vocabulary.
  • You enjoy discovering a central answer—the spangram—that explains the puzzle.
  • You are happy to explore, backtrack and test paths without a category grid.

Strands is a natural fit for players who find visual structure motivating. The board itself becomes a source of clues, and the answer is not complete until the paths account for all 48 letters.

Play both when you want complementary skills

Playing both does not duplicate the same exercise. Connections emphasizes language relationships and elimination; Strands emphasizes spatial scanning, adjacency and theme construction. Alternating them gives you two different forms of word reasoning without requiring a separate subscription for the daily puzzles.

Free play, subscriptions and archives

The official subscription page lists both Connections and Strands in the Games catalog. It also states that the daily versions remain available for free without a qualifying subscription. The subscription becomes relevant when you want the broader catalog, archives and subscriber tools.

What happens to your progress

The Connections help page says that signing in preserves progress across devices. Without an account, progress is stored locally and can be lost when you change devices. That distinction matters if you solve on a phone during a commute and later continue on a computer.

Archived Connections puzzles affect completion and win-rate statistics, but they do not affect your daily streak. You can therefore use the archive for practice without changing the record associated with the current daily run.

Stats, streaks and social play

Connections leaderboard

The Games app includes statistics and streak views for both Connections and Strands. Its Friends tab supports a Connections leaderboard for up to 100 friends, showing daily match counts. The help page says there are currently no global leaderboards, so the comparison is among people you add rather than the entire player population.

Daily release timing

Connections releases a new puzzle at midnight in the player’s timezone. That means two people in different time zones may receive the daily puzzle at different moments even though they are playing the same edition.

Sharing without spoilers

Connections has an official sharing flow designed to communicate your result without exposing the category answers. If you post a result publicly, use the game’s built-in share format or add a spoiler warning for any commentary that could reveal the groups.

Subscriber bonus variants

Weekly bonus drops are being added as a subscriber feature in the Games app and on the web. The publisher describes two examples:

  • Connections 3×3: three groups of three, using the familiar grouping idea in a smaller format.
  • Colorful Strands: the same Strands rules with a changed board treatment.

Jonathan Knight, head of Games, described the approach this way: “Bonus puzzles are an exciting addition to continue diversifying our portfolio, with each puzzle built on mechanics that our solvers already know and love, but with novelty to make them feel distinct from the daily puzzles.”

These variants are not replacements for the daily games. They are additional subscriber content for players who want more rounds built on the same core mechanics.

Practical Connections strategies

Start with the most specific relationship

Broad ideas such as “things found in a house” are dangerous because they can absorb too many words. Prefer a category with a narrow definition, a distinctive phrase pattern or an unusually precise relationship. The more specific the group, the fewer alternate homes its words are likely to have.

Protect against the one-word overlap

Before submitting, ask which word in your proposed group could plausibly belong elsewhere. If one word is doing all the work while the other three are obvious, pause and inspect the remaining board. Connections often becomes easier when you identify the word that is intentionally misleading.

Use failed submissions as information

A wrong group is not proof that every idea was useless. It tells you that at least one assumption was incorrect. Re-read the four words, remove the least certain member and test whether the remaining three point to a different category. Because mistakes are limited, use this approach deliberately rather than guessing repeatedly.

Keep the final groups mutually exclusive

The objective is a complete partition of the board, not four interesting observations. Once three categories appear likely, inspect the final words together; the last group often clarifies why an attractive earlier grouping was a red herring.

Practical Strands strategies

Use the theme as a filter, not a single answer

Read the theme as a clue to a family of words. Generate several possibilities, then look for those whose letters can form legal adjacent paths. A word that fits the theme but cannot be traced is not a solution; a less obvious synonym may be the intended entry.

Search by neighborhoods

Instead of scanning the 48 letters randomly, inspect clusters around letters that could begin or end a theme word. Since paths can change direction, check bends and compact loops rather than only straight runs. Marking a likely route mentally helps you avoid rediscovering the same dead end.

Look for the spangram when the board stalls

The spangram expresses the theme and spans opposite edges. If several ordinary words seem possible but none produces momentum, switch your search to a longer thematic phrase that could cross the board. Once recognized, it often supplies vocabulary and a structural reference for the remaining paths.

Account for every letter

All 48 letters are used. Unused cells are therefore evidence that the solve is incomplete, not merely decorative space. When you think you are finished, check whether your traced words collectively cover the board and whether any isolated letters suggest a missed path.

A simple way to choose before you start

  1. Pick your preferred clue type. Choose a list of words and hidden categories for Connections, or a visual grid and a theme for Strands.
  2. Decide how you want feedback. Connections gives an explicit result after a group submission; Strands rewards gradual discovery as paths and the spangram emerge.
  3. Consider your tolerance for ambiguity. Connections limits mistakes; Strands can leave you searching until the theme or route clicks.
  4. Check your access needs. Both daily games are free. Choose a Games subscription only if archives, synchronized history, statistics or subscriber extras matter to you.
  5. Use your own solve history. After several days, note whether your misses come from category overlap or from finding paths. That pattern is more useful than an unsupported claim that one game is objectively harder.

Common access and play problems

Your progress disappeared after changing devices

Connections progress is stored locally when you are not signed in. Sign in before switching devices if you need the game to preserve your place and history across hardware.

You cannot find older Strands puzzles

The daily Strands puzzle is free, but the official back catalog is tied to a Games subscription according to the cited rules guide and subscription listing. Check that you are signed into the account associated with the subscription.

Your streak did not change after an archive solve

Archived Connections puzzles contribute to completion and win-rate statistics, not to the daily streak. That behavior is intentional.

You expected a global ranking

The Games app’s Friends tab offers a Connections leaderboard for up to 100 friends, while the help page says there are currently no global leaderboards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: which one should you play?

Connections is the better choice for category deduction, semantic traps and a quick, mistake-limited round. Strands is the better choice for visual exploration, theme-led vocabulary and the satisfaction of uncovering a spangram. Since both daily puzzles are free, the practical answer is to try each for a week and keep the one whose kind of uncertainty feels engaging rather than frustrating. A subscription is an archive-and-tools decision, not a requirement for the daily games.
