The most reliable spoiler-light way to solve NYT Strands is to identify the puzzle’s category, test long paths from the grid’s edges for the single edge-to-edge spangram, then use the remaining letters to build theme words. Strands uses a 6-by-8 grid of 48 letters: you may connect horizontal, vertical, or diagonal neighbors, bend as often as needed, and never reuse a tile in one word.
This approach gives you a next move at every stage without handing you the answer. It also explains why the board becomes easier after the spangram and how to spend hints when you are stuck.

What the spangram is and why it matters
Every Strands puzzle contains exactly one spangram. It names or describes the puzzle’s theme and stretches from one edge of the board to the opposite edge, commonly from left to right or from top to bottom. The path can zigzag; “edge to edge” describes its endpoints, not a requirement that the letters form a straight line.
The spangram is usually a long word, a fused compound, or a phrase-like term that functions as the category label. When you find it, Strands marks it in yellow or gold. Ordinary theme words are marked in blue. The spangram is a required word, not a bonus: it is part of the complete solution.

| Board element | Rule or function | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Grid | 6 rows by 8 columns, for 48 letters | All tiles begin available |
| Letter path | Horizontal, vertical, or diagonal adjacency; bends are allowed | Tiles highlight as you drag |
| Tile use | A tile cannot be reused within one submitted word | Used letters become unavailable for that word |
| Theme words | Words that fit the clue and category | Blue highlight after a correct submission |
| Spangram | Exactly one theme-defining word that connects opposite edges | Yellow or gold highlight after a correct submission |
A spoiler-light method for finding the spangram
Do not begin by dragging random strings across the whole board. The clue and the spangram’s geometric constraint provide enough information to narrow the search while preserving the solve.
1. Read the clue literally first
Write down the plainest interpretation of the clue. If the clue suggests a group, object class, profession, place, or action, name that category in ordinary language. A literal reading often reveals the kind of compound or label the spangram will be.
Only after that should you test figurative, punning, or double meanings. Strands clues can point toward a familiar expression rather than a dictionary category. Keeping both readings separate prevents an early guess from forcing every later word to fit it.
2. Brainstorm a category label
Before tracing, list several possible labels for the category. Think of the word that could appear after “types of,” “kinds of,” or “examples of,” not just individual answers. For a clue about a collection, the spangram may be the name of the collection; for a clue about a phrase or activity, it may be a fused compound.
Keep the list short—three to five plausible labels is enough. The purpose is to give your eyes a target while you inspect the grid, not to solve the entire puzzle on paper.

3. Start at borders and corners
Because the spangram must reach opposite edges, inspect letters along the outer rows and columns first. A candidate that begins in a corner has several possible directions and a good chance of crossing the board. A candidate that begins near the middle of an edge may need a longer, more constrained route.

Do not reject a candidate because it turns; bends are normal. Reject it when the path cannot reach the opposite edge without reusing a tile or breaking the spelling.
4. Favor long, theme-defining paths
The spangram is commonly longer than an ordinary theme word. A long path that spells a category label or a distinctive compound is a stronger candidate than a short word that merely relates to the clue. Trace the entire route before submitting so you can check both endpoints and every repeated tile.
When a candidate reaches the opposite edge and matches the clue, submit it. The gold highlight confirms the role. If it turns blue instead, it is a theme word rather than the spangram; keep the word, but continue looking for the edge-to-edge category label.
5. Use the confirmed path as a map
Once the spangram is accepted, treat its used tiles as a boundary around the remaining search. The letters left on the board are not random: they must contain every other theme word exactly once across the full solution. A confirmed spangram therefore reduces both the visual clutter and the number of plausible category interpretations.

How to find the theme words after the category is clear
With the clue and spangram working together, switch from free association to a candidate-and-path process. The exact count varies, but most puzzles contain roughly five to eight theme words in addition to the one spangram.

Make a category list, then test the board
List likely members of the category without worrying about their locations. Include common examples first, then less obvious members suggested by the clue’s wording. For each candidate, scan for its first two or three letters among unused tiles and follow adjacent letters in spelling order.
A valid word must satisfy all three tests:
- It belongs to the puzzle’s theme.
- Each successive letter touches the previous tile horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- No tile is used twice in that word.
Do not scan only in straight lines. A path can turn at every step, and a diagonal move can connect letters that look separated when you inspect rows and columns alone.
Use short ordinary words as fuel, not as failures
Strands accepts non-theme words as a way to earn hints. If you see a clear ordinary word, submit it rather than spending several minutes trying to force it into the category. Three valid non-theme words award one in-game hint. This makes small words useful reconnaissance: they can convert an otherwise unproductive search into a controlled reveal.

Let unused clusters guide you
After each accepted theme word, inspect the unclaimed letters as a group. Remaining tiles often form compact shapes that suggest the next word’s route. If a candidate needs a tile already consumed by a confirmed word, set it aside and look for another category member.
The remaining board also acts as an audit. Near the end, every tile should be accounted for by the theme words and spangram. If the leftover letters cannot form plausible category members, revisit the last uncertain submission or your interpretation of the clue. An impossible remainder usually means an earlier path or category assumption needs correction, not that the puzzle contains an error.
How to use hints without giving away the solution
Strands’ hint system is graduated rather than all-or-nothing. The game does not simply print an answer when you ask for help.

Earn a hint with three non-theme words
Submit three valid words that are not part of the theme. They may be ordinary dictionary words discovered while exploring the grid. Wrong guesses do not carry a penalty, so you can test a sensible path without risking a score deduction; avoid submitting strings that are not words merely to generate attempts.
What a hint reveals
A hint highlights letters belonging to one unfound theme word. You still have to determine the order, trace the adjacent path, and submit the word. The hint therefore removes a visual obstacle while preserving the vocabulary and path-finding parts of the solve.
Hints do not directly reveal the spangram. If you are specifically looking for the category label, return to the edge-to-edge scan and clue analysis rather than expecting a hint to identify it.
A practical hint ladder
- Interpret the clue: write a literal category and a possible figurative reading.
- Scan spangram routes: inspect borders and corners for a long category label that can reach the opposite edge.
- Brainstorm members: list likely theme words and test them against unused adjacent letters.
- Earn and use a hint: submit three ordinary words, then follow the highlighted letters without asking for the completed answer.
- Use a full solution only last: preserve the deduction work until the board or your available time makes further searching unreasonable.
Understanding paths, bends, and diagonal moves
A frequent source of false dead ends is treating Strands like a word-search with only horizontal and vertical lines. It is a connected-path puzzle. Every next tile may be above, below, beside, or diagonally adjacent to the current tile.
For example, a candidate can move right across two letters, turn down, step diagonally up-right, and then continue left, provided each move touches the previous tile. The path cannot jump over a tile, and it cannot revisit a tile already used in that same word. A tile used by one accepted word is also unavailable for constructing another word because the complete board partitions all 48 letters among the solution words.
When a spelling seems right but the path fails, try a different starting occurrence of a repeated letter or a different bend. When several routes spell the same candidate, choose the route that leaves a coherent cluster for the remaining category words.

Endgame checks before you give up
Check the clue at the category level
Ask whether your proposed words share a precise relationship or merely a broad association. If the list includes several near-misses, the clue may be pointing to a narrower set, a pun, or a compound phrase. Reclassify before searching every remaining tile.
Check the spangram’s endpoints
Verify that the supposed spangram actually starts and ends on opposite edges. A long gold-looking candidate that begins and ends inside the board cannot be the spangram, even if it describes the clue well.
Check for a consumed tile
If a promising theme word cannot be traced, compare its route with accepted words. One mistaken diagonal or an accidental detour may have used the only copy of a needed letter. Re-examine the uncertain word rather than changing the entire category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the final remainder
When only a few clusters remain, read them as shapes first and letters second. A compact cluster often reveals a short category member; a scattered remainder may indicate that a longer path has not yet been found. The final board should have no unused letters.
Official play, archives, and independent hint pages
The daily Strands puzzle is available free on the New York Times Games site and app according to the cited beginner guide. The official archive of past puzzles requires a subscription under the terms described there. Access policies can change, so check the current notice in the Games product before assuming that an older puzzle or archive feature is included.
If you use an independent fan archive or hint page, choose it according to the kind of help you want:
| Option | Spoiler control | Freshness and access | Affiliation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official daily game | You control your own solving and in-game hints | Current daily board; daily access described as free | Official New York Times product |
| Official archive | Depends on how you reveal an older puzzle | Past puzzles; subscription required under the cited terms | Official New York Times product |
| Independent hint page | May offer graduated clues or a complete answer; inspect headings before scrolling | Coverage and update timing vary by site | Independent fan resource |
For a spoiler-sensitive solve, the in-game hint ladder is the safest sequence because it highlights letters without printing the word. On an external page, stop at the first clue level and avoid answer sections or collapsed panels labelled with the solution.

- Read the clue twice. Record one literal category and one possible pun or figurative interpretation.
- Inspect the perimeter. Trace long candidates from corners and edge tiles, allowing bends and diagonals, and reject any route that cannot reach the opposite edge.
- Confirm the spangram. Submit the category-defining path and use its occupied tiles to redraw your mental search area.
- List and test members. Start with common category examples, then follow unused adjacent letters rather than searching for straight lines.
- Convert dead time into hints. Submit three valid non-theme words for a highlighted-letter hint; wrong guesses have no penalty.
- Audit the remainder. If the final letters do not support the category, revisit the least certain word or clue interpretation.
This routine keeps assistance proportional to the obstacle. You get a geometric filter for the spangram, a category-driven search for theme words, and a controlled hint when visual uncertainty—not vocabulary—is the problem.
