How NYT Strands works

Strands is played on a 6×8 letter grid. You trace adjoining letters in any direction to form words. A letter cannot be reused within a word, and paths cannot cross themselves. Theme answers appear in light blue; the spangram appears in yellow. Once the puzzle is solved, every letter on the board has been used exactly once.

How to earn a hint

  1. Search the grid for any word that is not one of the theme answers and contains at least four letters.
  2. Find three valid non-theme words in total.
  3. Strands then awards an in-game hint that reveals one theme word.

These extra words do not count as answers, but they are useful when the grid feels blocked. Try common verbs, plurals and short descriptive words before spending a hint.

A practical way to finish game #958

  1. Start with the theme phrase and look for obvious reactions such as a color change, laughter or sweating.
  2. Mark any likely answer mentally, then inspect the surrounding letters for alternate routes; a correct word may bend several times.
  3. Use the initial-and-length clues to distinguish similar possibilities before committing to a path.
  4. Locate the spangram by looking for a ten-letter route that can reach both horizontal edges of the grid.
  5. After each confirmed word, scan the remaining unused letters. Because the completed board uses every letter once, isolated leftovers often reveal the final entry.
