Choose Wordle if you want a short, tightly bounded deduction routine: one five-letter answer, six guesses, and unambiguous color feedback. Choose Connections if you prefer finding themes among 16 words, testing competing interpretations, and discussing a solve with other people. Neither is objectively harder; the better fit depends on whether you enjoy letter logic or semantic association.
Wordle and Connections are different kinds of thinking
Both games deliver one puzzle per day, but they ask you to solve different problems. Wordle narrows a single five-letter word through six attempts. Connections asks you to partition 16 words into four groups of four, with each group linked by a category. The first is a constrained deduction exercise; the second is a search for relationships in a deliberately ambiguous set.

That distinction matters more than popularity, streak length, or which game appears first in your Games app. A player who likes extracting information from each guess may find Wordle satisfying and Connections frustrating. Someone who enjoys wordplay, cultural references, and arguing over what a clue “really” means may have the opposite reaction.

How Connections works
Sixteen words, four hidden categories
Connections presents 16 words and asks you to find four sets of four that share something in common. The New York Times describes it as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.” A completed board therefore requires two decisions: identify a plausible relationship, then determine whether exactly four entries belong to it.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The categories are color-coded by difficulty after the solve: yellow is the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple as the trickiest. The colors are not four selectable modes; they describe the intended difficulty of the groups in that day’s puzzle.
Why the board feels ambiguous
Connections intentionally includes words that could fit multiple categories. A word may appear to belong with several others, but only one arrangement is the published solution. This design forces you to manage overlap rather than accept the first plausible connection.
The official help material says editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary and that each puzzle has exactly one solution. In practical terms, a “good” group must be both semantically defensible and compatible with the remaining 12 words. If a proposed category leaves an awkward leftover set, it is often a trap even when the first four words technically share a trait.
Mistakes are a scarce resource
You can submit a proposed group of four. Four mistakes end the puzzle, so the game rewards testing a hypothesis without spending attempts casually. The interface shows how many mistakes remain, making the risk visible while you work through ambiguous candidates.
Daily release and account behavior
A new Connections puzzle is released every day at midnight in the player’s time zone. The core game is free on supported web and app platforms and does not require registration. Signing in allows progress to be retained across devices, which is useful if you start on a phone and finish on a computer.
How Wordle works
One five-letter answer
The New York Times Wordle FAQ describes six attempts to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, the game returns color-coded feedback about the letters. That feedback lets you eliminate impossible placements, identify letters in the answer, and refine the pattern for the next attempt.

Wordle is not simply a vocabulary test. A guess can be useful even when it is not the answer because its letters reveal information about the hidden pattern. Strong play balances likely words with guesses that test several high-value letters early, then uses the feedback to narrow the remaining possibilities.
Statistics and streaks
The New York Times account experience supports statistics and streak tracking. Those records turn a five-minute puzzle into a daily habit, but they also change the emotional stakes: using a sixth guess to save a solve feels different when a long streak is on the line.
Which game is harder?
There is no objective ranking. Difficulty varies with the day’s vocabulary, the familiarity of a category, the number of plausible interpretations, and the individual solver.
Why Wordle can be harder
- A solver may know the answer’s letters but still face several valid five-letter candidates.
- Repeated letters can make feedback less intuitive than a simple “present or absent” test.
- A narrow vocabulary or an unlucky opening guess can leave too few attempts for confirmation.
Why Connections can be harder
- Several words may appear to fit the same theme, creating deliberate false starts.
- Categories can depend on cultural, linguistic, or technical knowledge that is unevenly distributed among players.
- One incorrect submission consumes part of the four-mistake allowance, so an attractive theory may be expensive to test.
The practical comparison
Wordle’s difficulty is usually visible as a shrinking set of letter patterns. Connections’ difficulty is often interpretive: you may understand every word but not see which relationship the editors intend. Wordle therefore tends to feel more predictable, while Connections can produce a larger swing between an immediate solve and a frustrating near miss.

Pick Wordle for a bounded solo routine
Wordle is the better choice when you want a single target, a fixed number of attempts, and feedback that can be analyzed systematically. It fits a commute, a coffee break, or any routine where you want a clear beginning and end without learning a new rule set each day.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- You enjoy deduction from explicit clues.
- You prefer one answer rather than several categories.
- You like tracking a streak and comparing guess efficiency.
- You want a puzzle that can usually be completed without negotiating interpretations with another player.
Pick Connections for semantic leaps
Connections is the better choice when you enjoy discovering a theme that was not obvious at first glance. The pleasure comes from moving between meanings: a word may be literal in one category, a proper name in another, or part of a phrase you had not considered.
- You enjoy brainstorming and making associations.
- You like puzzles that invite conversation about alternate answers.
- You are comfortable with uncertainty before committing to a group.
- You want the satisfaction of recognizing an editor’s trick after the reveal.
For groups, Connections usually creates more discussion
Both games are easy to share, but they generate different conversations. A Wordle result is commonly reduced to a guess grid and a number of attempts. Connections exposes the categories and the mistakes, so players can debate which words looked interchangeable and where a trap appeared. That makes Connections a natural fit for a household, office chat, or group of friends solving at the same time.
That is a preference judgment, not a rule: a group that enjoys comparing opening strategies may prefer Wordle, while a solo player who likes verbal experimentation may prefer Connections.

A disciplined Wordle routine
- Start with an information-rich word. Use a normal five-letter word that tests several common letters instead of trying to guess the answer immediately.
- Read every color before the next guess. Separate letters confirmed in place from letters confirmed elsewhere and letters eliminated from the answer.
- Protect against duplicate-letter surprises. If the pattern leaves multiple candidates, use a guess that distinguishes them rather than repeating a nearly identical word.
- Spend the final attempts on confirmation. Once the candidate list is short, prioritize a legal answer that fits all feedback over a speculative word that merely looks familiar.
The game’s six-attempt limit means an early guess has two jobs: it may solve the puzzle, or it may provide enough evidence to make the later guesses reliable.
A cautious Connections routine
- Scan for an obvious group. Look for four words with a precise shared property, not merely a broad resemblance.
- List competing meanings. Before submitting, note words that could plausibly belong to a different group.
- Test the leftover board mentally. If removing four words leaves a coherent set of 12, your hypothesis becomes stronger; if the remainder is chaotic, reconsider.
- Submit the highest-confidence group. You have only four mistakes, so avoid spending an attempt to test a category that is supported by a single weak association.
- Re-evaluate after every accepted group. The remaining words can reveal what a previously ambiguous entry was intended to mean.
Connections rewards flexibility. A category that seems too obvious may be a decoy, while an unusual grouping can become clear once one competing word is removed.
Daily habit, sharing, and competition
Both games are designed around a once-a-day cadence. Wordle’s compact format makes it easy to preserve a personal streak. Connections also supports daily completion habits, but its result communicates more about the solve: the category colors and mistake count show whether the player found the intended path or survived several false starts.

Sharing is spoiler-sensitive. A Wordle grid can communicate the number of attempts without revealing the answer. A Connections result can show the category colors and mistakes, but discussing the category names or a distinctive word may give away the puzzle. If you share in a group, agree whether “result only” means hiding category labels as well as the final arrangement.

Playing the daily puzzles
No subscription is required for the core Connections game on supported web and app platforms, and it can be played without registration. Wordle’s standard daily game is likewise presented as a free daily puzzle in the New York Times Games ecosystem. An account is useful for carrying progress across devices and for retaining statistics, but the essential act of solving the daily board does not depend on buying a physical product or special device.
What a subscription adds to Connections
The official Connections help information identifies two subscriber features:
- Connections Bot: personalized analysis covering difficulty, skill, uniqueness, category, mistakes, and guess-by-guess performance.
- Connections archive: access to earlier puzzles for All Access and Games subscribers.
The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023. Archived puzzles count toward completion and win-rate statistics, but they do not change the daily streak. This distinction matters if you are deciding whether a subscription is useful for extra practice or only for preserving a current run.
Price and regional qualification
Current subscription prices, regional restrictions, and eligibility for any commercial or affiliate offer were not established in the available material. Check the New York Times subscription page for your country before purchasing; do not assume a price or feature list from another region.
Popularity and history in context
Connections debuted in beta on June 12, 2023. TechCrunch reported in August 2023 that it had become The New York Times’ second most popular game behind Wordle. Those figures describe the early growth of the title, not a current head-to-head player count.
Best Value
The New York Times Company later announced that more than 11 billion puzzles were solved across New York Times Games in 2025. That is a portfolio-wide figure covering multiple games, so it cannot be used to calculate how many people currently play Wordle or Connections individually.
The games’ continued visibility reflects different strengths: Wordle established a widely recognizable daily guessing ritual, while Connections expanded the format into category discovery and social debate.
Common mistakes when choosing between them
Assuming the newer game replaces the older one
Connections is not a harder version of Wordle, and Wordle is not a simpler version of Connections. Their constraints and skills differ enough that a player can excel at one and struggle with the other.
Using “harder” as a universal verdict
A category based on a familiar subject can make Connections feel effortless, while an unfamiliar five-letter answer can make Wordle feel brutal. On another day, a single ambiguous Connections word can consume several mistakes while Wordle yields to a well-chosen opening guess.
Paying for features you do not use
The daily games and a subscriber-only analysis or archive are separate needs. If you only want the current puzzle, start with the free daily experience. Consider a subscription when historical puzzles, cross-device account features, or Connections Bot analysis justify it for you.
Expecting a physical product
Neither game requires a boxed puzzle, toy, or dedicated hardware. They are digital daily games played on supported websites and apps, so a physical-product search is not relevant to deciding between them.
A quick decision framework
| If you want… | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A predictable five-minute deduction | Wordle | One answer, six guesses, and direct letter feedback |
| A puzzle built around themes and word meanings | Connections | Four groups must be discovered from 16 deliberately overlapping words |
| A result that is easy to share without revealing the answer | Wordle | The guess grid communicates performance compactly |
| A result that sparks debate about the clues | Connections | Categories, mistakes, and alternate associations invite discussion |
| Extra practice from older daily puzzles | Connections with an eligible subscription | The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 |
| Personalized post-game analysis | Connections with an eligible subscription | Connections Bot reports multiple aspects of your solve |
The verdict: which daily puzzle is better for you?
Wordle is the stronger fit for a compact, methodical routine. Its five-letter target and six-guess ceiling give every session a clear shape, and the feedback supports deliberate deduction. Connections is the stronger fit for players who want ambiguity, category discovery, and a result worth arguing about afterward. Its 16-word board creates more room for interpretation and more opportunities for a satisfying “now I see it” moment.
If you are undecided, play both for a week and judge the kind of frustration you enjoy. Do you want to spend a guess separating two letter patterns, or spend a mistake proving that four words belong together? The answer to that question is a better guide than any universal difficulty ranking.
