NYT Connections vs. Wordle: Which Daily Word Game Is Right for You?

Choose Wordle if you like using clues to narrow down one hidden five-letter answer. Choose Connections if you prefer spotting relationships among a board of words and sorting them into categories. Neither is universally harder or better: they ask for different kinds of thinking, and both daily games are listed as available without a NYT Games subscription.

How do Wordle and Connections differ?

What you compare Wordle Connections
Main task Find one hidden five-letter word in up to six guesses. Sort 16 items into four groups of four by identifying a shared theme.
Feedback After each guess, colors show whether letters are in the answer and whether they are in the right positions. A submitted group either matches a category or counts as a mistake; the game allows up to four mistakes.
Typical reasoning Eliminate possibilities using letter clues and likely words. Spot semantic links, compare competing groupings, and watch for wordplay or misleading overlaps.
Best fit Players who enjoy a focused, step-by-step deduction puzzle. Players who enjoy lateral associations and categorizing words.

The daily formats are distinct rather than interchangeable: Wordle progressively narrows a single answer, while Connections asks you to infer several intended relationships from the same set of clues. TechRadar’s Wordle guide describes the six-guess, color-feedback format; its Connections guide covers group-finding, mistakes, and wordplay.

How does Wordle work?

You enter a five-letter guess, and the game marks each letter: green means the letter is in the correct position, yellow means it appears in the answer but belongs elsewhere, and gray means it is not in the answer. You have up to six guesses to identify the word.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The useful loop is to treat each result as evidence. Green letters lock in positions; yellow letters belong somewhere else; gray letters can be eliminated from later guesses. A good next guess uses those clues to rule out possibilities rather than repeating information you already have.

How does Connections work?

Connections presents 16 items and asks you to find four sets of four that share a theme. The challenge is not just noticing a relationship: several words may plausibly fit more than one grouping, and the intended category can depend on a less obvious association or wordplay. You can make up to four mistakes before the game ends.

When a possible group looks convincing, check the whole set for a single relationship that explains all four items, not just a pair or three of them. That helps avoid committing to an attractive but incomplete pattern.

Which game feels harder?

There is no established universal difficulty winner. Wordle limits the number of guesses, but its feedback makes the target progressively more constrained. Connections has four categories to uncover and may use overlapping meanings or wordplay, so the intended group can be ambiguous. Which one feels tougher depends on whether you find letter deduction or semantic association more demanding; the cited mechanics guides do not provide a controlled comparison of difficulty.

Are Wordle and Connections free to play?

The New York Times Help Center lists both Wordle and Connections among its daily games available without a Games subscription. A subscription is for readers who want the broader Games collection and eligible extras, rather than a prerequisite for these two daily puzzles. The Help Center says account login can sync saved progress, statistics, and streaks across devices; without an account, progress is stored locally and may be lost when changing devices.
