Connections is the better fit if you prefer sorting 16 visible words into four themed groups while avoiding convincing decoys. Neither game has an official, directly comparable difficulty score, so the harder puzzle depends on whether letter deduction or category recognition suits you.
Wordle and Connections at a glance
Both are daily New York Times word games, but they ask you to solve uncertainty in opposite ways. Wordle gives you one answer to identify and feedback after every guess. Connections gives you all 16 words immediately, then asks you to discover which four belong together four times.

| Feature | Wordle | Connections |
|---|---|---|
| Core task | Guess a five-letter word | Sort 16 words into four groups of four |
| Attempts or pressure | Six tries or fewer | Incorrect groupings count as mistakes; the NYT statistics definition of a win is completion in under four mistakes |
| Information shown | Feedback after each guess helps narrow the answer | All 16 candidate words are visible from the start |
| What makes it difficult | Many possible words must be reduced to one answer | Words can plausibly fit more than one category |
| Difficulty labeling | No official cross-game difficulty rating | Categories are colored by relative difficulty: yellow easiest, then green, blue and purple trickiest |
| Daily access | Listed by NYT as playable without a qualifying Games subscription | Playable free without registering or signing in; also listed as available without a qualifying Games subscription |
The practical distinction is simple: Wordle concentrates uncertainty around one hidden answer, while Connections spreads uncertainty across relationships among 16 visible items. That mechanical difference explains why two people can disagree about which game is harder without either being wrong.

The board and objective
Connections presents 16 words. Your job is to select four that share a theme, submit the group, and continue until all 16 words have been placed into four groups of four. The New York Times Help Center describes it as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.”

The relationship may be straightforward, such as four kinds of fish, or based on wordplay, such as words beginning with “fire.” The intended relationship is editorial rather than merely personal: a group must match the category the puzzle setter built into that board.
Category colors and relative difficulty
Once solved, groups are associated with four colors. Yellow is the easiest category band, followed by green, blue and purple as the trickiest. These colors describe the relative difficulty of categories within Connections; they are not a rating that can be compared directly with Wordle.
Why plausible overlaps are the main trap
Connections is deliberately constructed so that a word can appear to fit more than one possible theme. You may see four words that seem related, only to discover that one of them belongs to a different intended group and that a less obvious word completes the first category.

The board has exactly one solution, but reaching it requires testing the strength of a category against the remaining words. A relationship that is technically possible is not enough if it leaves an awkward leftover set or creates a second competing group.
Mistakes and statistics
Each submitted grouping can count as a mistake. The NYT statistics page defines a win as completing the puzzle in under four mistakes, which is the useful official benchmark when you look at your own results. The game therefore adds a different kind of pressure from Wordle: you are not spending a fixed number of turns on individual letters, but you are spending opportunities on whole four-word hypotheses.

How to approach a board
- Scan for an unmistakable cluster. Start with words that have a very specific shared meaning, form or usage rather than a broad association.
- Separate literal links from wordplay. A set may be connected by meaning, spelling, a prefix, a phrase or another construction.
- Check every candidate against the other 12 words. Before submitting, ask whether one of the four has an equally strong home elsewhere.
- Use the remaining board as evidence. A category is stronger when the words left behind can still form coherent groups.
- Submit only a complete, defensible set. A vague association is costly because one mistake can make the remaining board harder to read.
How NYT Wordle works
The six-guess format
The NYT Games app describes Wordle as guessing a five-letter word in six tries or fewer. Every guess is an attempt to identify the single daily answer, so the game is a bounded process: you have six opportunities to turn partial information into a final word.
Feedback narrows one hidden answer
After each guess, the result tells you how that guess relates to the answer. You use that information to eliminate impossible letters and arrangements, preserve confirmed possibilities and choose a more informative next word. Unlike Connections, you are not classifying the entire board; you are progressively reducing a candidate list until one word remains plausible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical Wordle solving loop
- Record the first result. Note which letters and positions are supported and which are ruled out by the feedback.
- Protect confirmed information. Keep a known letter in its established position when testing other possibilities, unless the feedback shows that assumption is wrong.
- Use an information-seeking guess when needed. If several answers remain, a guess that tests new high-value letters can be more useful than immediately guessing one narrow possibility.
- Rebuild the candidate set after every result. Do not rely on memory alone; remove words that conflict with any confirmed or excluded letter information.
- Reserve the final attempts for valid candidates. The six-try limit means speculative guesses become increasingly expensive as the board narrows.
Wordle rewards disciplined elimination. A player who enjoys letter placement, spelling patterns and incremental deduction will usually find its feedback loop intuitive.
Which puzzle is harder?
There is no official statistic that ranks the full daily game of Connections against the full daily game of Wordle. The reviewed NYT rule and access pages explain how the games work, but they do not publish a common measure of completion time, player accuracy or relative difficulty for both games. Connections’ yellow-to-purple scale is internal to its own categories, not a cross-game score.
Reasoning type
Wordle is primarily letter and word deduction. You infer an answer from constraints generated by your previous guesses. Connections is primarily semantic association and category recognition. You infer the editor’s intended relationship among visible words and decide which apparent links are deliberate.

Information structure
Wordle hides the answer and reveals information gradually. Connections exposes all 16 words at once, which sounds generous but creates a different burden: the visible information is noisy because several words may look related in multiple ways.

Mistake pressure
Wordle gives you six attempts, and every guess consumes one of them. Connections lets you propose a whole group at a time, so an error can misclassify four words at once and distort how you view the remaining board. The official Connections statistics definition of a win—completion in under four mistakes—captures that grouped-risk structure.
Difficulty variability
Connections explicitly labels category bands by color, so one board may contain an especially approachable yellow group and a much more elusive purple group. Wordle has no equivalent official color scale for rating a day’s overall difficulty. Neither system supplies a defensible number for saying that one game is objectively harder than the other.
What your strengths change
- You may find Wordle harder if spelling uncertainty, similar letter patterns or a shrinking list of possible words are frustrating.
- You may find Connections harder if broad associations feel ambiguous or if you tend to commit to the first plausible category you see.
- You may find both difficult in different ways because Wordle tests sequential deduction while Connections tests simultaneous classification and resistance to decoys.
Which one should you try first?
Choose Wordle for a compact deduction loop
Start with Wordle if you want one clear target, a fixed six-guess limit and immediate information after every attempt. It works well as a short daily exercise because the board state is easy to summarize: one answer, a handful of confirmed constraints and a limited number of guesses remaining.
Choose Connections for associations and classification
Start with Connections if you enjoy asking why four seemingly unrelated terms belong together. It rewards flexible thinking: a category may be semantic, lexical or based on a shared phrase, and the most obvious relationship is not always the intended one.

Choose based on the kind of uncertainty you enjoy
| If you prefer… | Try first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One hidden answer and gradual feedback | Wordle | The result of each guess narrows a single five-letter target |
| Many visible clues and relationship hunting | Connections | You work from 16 words toward four themed groups |
| A strict, countable attempt limit | Wordle | The format provides six guesses or fewer |
| Testing hypotheses about categories | Connections | Each proposed group must survive overlap and leftover-word checks |
| Understanding the explanation behind a solution | Connections | The satisfaction comes from seeing the editor’s intended theme across four words |
This is a fit recommendation based on mechanics, not a claim that one game is better. Many players alternate because the two puzzles exercise different skills.

Bonus formats are not the standard daily games
NYT’s Bonus Puzzles help page describes additional subscriber formats that change the rules of the core games.
| Variation | Format | How it differs from the daily game |
|---|---|---|
| Wordle in 1 | Five rounds with unlimited guesses in each round and Wordle-style color feedback | It is a multi-round bonus format rather than the standard six-try daily Wordle |
| Connections 3×3 | Nine items arranged into three groups of three, with up to four mistakes | It reduces the board and group size instead of using the standard 16-item, four-groups-of-four structure |
If someone describes a puzzle as “Connections” or “Wordle” without specifying a bonus mode, the comparison above refers to the core daily formats. The bonus versions should not be used to infer that the standard games have different attempt limits.
Common comparison mistakes
Treating Connections’ colors as a universal difficulty score
Yellow, green, blue and purple indicate relative category difficulty inside a Connections board. They do not prove that the entire Connections game is easier or harder than Wordle on that day.
Assuming visible words make Connections easier
Seeing all 16 words removes the hidden-answer problem but introduces overlap. A word can look right in more than one group, and a persuasive false category can consume a mistake.
Assuming six Wordle guesses measure overall difficulty
Six tries describe the game’s rules, not the difficulty of a particular answer. A familiar word and an unusual word both use the same six-guess framework.
Using a single completion time as a universal verdict
The official pages reviewed for these games do not provide a directly comparable completion-time statistic. A quick solve by one player cannot establish that one format is objectively easier for everyone.
A simple decision framework for your daily puzzle
- Ask whether you want a target or a field. Pick Wordle for one target word; pick Connections for a field of 16 candidates.
- Identify your preferred evidence. Wordle supplies feedback from guesses. Connections supplies relationships you must interpret.
- Choose your tolerance for ambiguity. If overlapping meanings are enjoyable, Connections may be the better fit. If you prefer explicit constraints, Wordle may feel fairer.
- Decide whether you want a fixed turn count or grouped risk. Wordle counts six individual guesses. Connections makes each four-word submission a larger hypothesis and tracks mistakes.
- Try both before judging difficulty. Because the games test different abilities, your first impression of one should not be treated as a universal ranking.
Bottom line on Wordle vs. Connections
Wordle asks, “Which five-letter word fits all this feedback?” Connections asks, “Which four words belong together, and which apparent overlaps are traps?” Choose Wordle for focused letter deduction and Connections for category discovery. The New York Times provides no shared difficulty statistic that can settle the comparison objectively, so the most accurate answer to “Which is harder?” is the one that matches the kind of reasoning you find less natural.
