If NYT Connections is stuck on a loading screen, shows a blank board, or rejects every guess, first determine whether the problem is limited to one app, one browser, your account session, your network, or the service itself. Open the puzzle directly at nytimes.com/games/connections, then try the NYT Games app or News app. The surface that fails tells you which fix to try.
For the mobile app, update the app and your device, force-quit and reopen it, sign out and back in, and reinstall only if the earlier steps fail. For the website, refresh once, clear NYT cache and cookies, allow cookies, and temporarily disable extensions such as password managers. Test another browser or network before treating the problem as a broad outage.

Start by identifying what is actually failing
“Connections is not working” can describe several different failures. A loading spinner on an iPhone is not diagnosed the same way as a board that loads in Chrome but will not accept a selected group. Before changing settings, record the exact symptom and compare access surfaces.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you see | Most likely scope | Best first comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Blank screen or endless spinner in the Games app | App state, app version, operating-system compatibility, or a stale login session | Open Connections in a browser |
| Web page will not load in one browser | Cached files, cookies, an extension, or browser-specific security settings | Use a private window or a second browser |
| Board loads, but guesses are rejected | Stale page data, cookies, an extension, or a temporary game-state error | Refresh once, then test with extensions disabled |
| App and website fail on one Wi-Fi network | Connection, DNS, firewall, filtering, or security software | Switch briefly to cellular data or another Wi-Fi network |
| Every surface fails on multiple networks | Account/session problem or a wider NYT service incident | Test while signed out and ask another person to open the game |
| The puzzle is unavailable near midnight | Daily release boundary in your local timezone | Reload after midnight has passed locally |
These comparisons are more useful than repeatedly tapping the same button. If the failure follows one device, focus on that device. If it follows your account across devices and networks, focus on the session or report the issue. If it affects people on different networks at the same time, local cache changes are unlikely to solve it.

Where NYT Connections is available
The puzzle can be opened in the NYT Games app, at the official web address nytimes.com/games/connections, and in the News app. Connections is free to play and does not require sign-in, although signing in lets NYT retain progress across devices.
The daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s timezone. If you opened the previous puzzle shortly before midnight, the page can remain in an old state until it is reloaded. Around the release boundary, wait until local midnight has passed, then close and reopen the game or refresh the page. Do not assume that a release-time mismatch means the service is down.
Use this five-minute isolation test
- Open the direct web page. Enter the official Connections address rather than following an old bookmark or a link inside another app.
- Try a second surface. If you normally use the app, test the website; if you normally use the website, test the Games app or News app.
- Change the browser context. Open a private window or a different browser. This temporarily avoids most stored site data and many extensions.
- Change the network. Move from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or use another trusted network. A result that changes with the network points to filtering or connectivity rather than the puzzle itself.
- Check signed-in versus signed-out behavior. Because sign-in is optional, open the game without an account if possible. If it works signed out but fails after login, treat the problem as an account session issue.
Write down which combinations work. For example, “website works on cellular in Safari, app fails on home Wi-Fi” points to two separate local issues; “website and app fail on Wi-Fi and cellular while another person also sees the failure” is evidence of a broader problem.
Fix a stuck or blank mobile app
NYT’s mobile-app guidance uses an escalation order that preserves your local data as long as possible: update, restart, create a fresh login session, then reinstall. Follow the steps in order so you know which change solved the problem.
1. Update the NYT app
Open your device’s app store, find the NYT app, and install any available update. An outdated build can fail after a server-side change even when other apps still work. After the update completes, launch Connections again rather than resuming an old app window.
2. Update the operating system
Install pending iOS, iPadOS, or Android updates supported by your device. The app and operating system work together; updating only the app may not correct a compatibility or web-rendering problem. Restart the device after a major system update if the store or system requests it.
3. Force-quit and reopen
Close the NYT app from the recent-apps or app-switcher view so it is not left suspended in a bad state. Reopen it from the home screen and wait for the game to initialize. NYT specifically recommends restarting the app when it is not displaying or loading properly.
4. Start a new login session
If you use an NYT account, sign out inside the app, fully close it, reopen it, and sign back in. This replaces an expired or corrupted session token. Confirm that you are using the email address associated with the progress you expect to see. If you play without an account, skip this step and continue with the reinstall test.
5. Reinstall only after the earlier steps
Uninstall the NYT app, restart the device if it offers that option, and install the current version from the official app store. NYT states that reinstalling does not remove saved articles, recipes, or Games streaks and statistics. You may still need to sign in again, so keep your account credentials or access to your email available.
6. Re-test before changing unrelated settings
Open Connections immediately after reinstalling. If the game works on cellular but not Wi-Fi, the app itself is probably healthy and the remaining issue is network-specific. If it still fails on both networks while the website works, keep using the website temporarily and report the app details rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Fix a page that loads but will not accept answers
When the grid appears but a selected group cannot be submitted, treat it as a browser-state problem first. A rejected guess can also be a legitimate game response, so distinguish “the game says the group is one away or invalid” from “the submit control does nothing, freezes, or resets.”

Use the browser’s normal reload control once. Repeatedly refreshing while a submission is processing can create multiple stale tabs or lose the visible state. If the page returns with the same board and the controls respond, make one test selection.
Clear cached files and NYT cookies
Browsers store files and cookies from NYTimes.com. NYT explains that outdated or conflicting data can interfere with account access and page behavior. In your browser’s privacy or site-settings menu, remove cached files and cookies for NYTimes.com, then close and reopen the browser before visiting the direct Connections URL.
Clearing site data can sign you out of NYT and other sessions on that domain. It does not delete the daily puzzle from NYT’s servers, but it can remove local preferences or require you to authenticate again. If you use a password manager, make sure you can retrieve the correct credentials before clearing cookies.
Allow cookies for NYTimes.com
Cookies must be accepted for NYTimes.com. If your browser blocks all cookies, blocks third-party content needed by the page, or uses an aggressive privacy mode, the game may load incompletely or fail to preserve a selection. Add an exception for NYTimes.com, reload, and test again. If you are in a private window, remember that its cookie policy can differ from your normal window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDisable extensions temporarily
Password managers, content blockers, script filters, translation tools, and security extensions can alter forms or scripts on the game page. Disable extensions temporarily, reload, and try one harmless interaction. If the game works, re-enable extensions one at a time until the conflict returns. Chrome’s official loading-error guidance recommends this one-at-a-time method because it identifies the interfering add-on without leaving every extension disabled.
Try a clean browser context
A private window or a second browser is a diagnostic control, not a permanent workaround. If Connections accepts answers there, compare the two environments: extensions, cookie settings, browser version, and stored NYT data. Update the affected browser before restoring extensions.
Check connection, firewall, and security layers
A page that fails only on one network is often being filtered or interrupted before the game can finish loading. Test with cellular data or another trusted Wi-Fi network. Do not make permanent router or firewall changes until this comparison identifies a network dependency.
Look for network-specific symptoms
- Wi-Fi fails, cellular works: restart the router, check parental-control or DNS-filtering rules, and ask the network administrator whether NYTimes.com is restricted.
- Cellular fails, Wi-Fi works: check carrier-level filtering, a mobile VPN, or a device security profile.
- Both networks fail in one browser: focus on cookies, extensions, browser updates, or account state.
- All networks and browsers fail: compare another device and another person’s access before concluding that the service is broadly unavailable.
Chrome’s loading-error guidance lists connection problems, extensions, and firewall or security settings as possible causes. Corporate, school, and public networks may block scripts or WebSocket connections used by interactive pages. If you cannot change those policies, use a permitted network or ask the administrator to review the block.
If you run antivirus web protection, a VPN, DNS filtering, or a browser privacy tool, pause it only long enough to test on a trusted network and then restore protection. Never install an unknown “fix” or provide account credentials to a pop-up claiming to repair Connections.
Resolve account and session problems
Connections does not require sign-in, but NYT recommends signing in to retain progress across devices. That convenience also creates an additional failure point: a stale, expired, or mismatched session can prevent progress from loading even when the public puzzle page is available.
Test without signing in
Open the game in a private window or a browser where you are not logged in. If the board works there, the account session or a cookie is implicated. Clear NYTimes.com cookies, sign in again, and verify the email address shown in your account settings.
Check whether progress is device-specific
Use the same account on a second device. If progress appears there but not on the original device, reset the original app or browser state. If the same account fails everywhere while signed-out play works, record that pattern for NYT support.
Do not confuse a new puzzle with lost progress
A puzzle released at local midnight can look different from the board you opened earlier. Confirm the date shown by the game and your device’s timezone before assuming that a board or streak disappeared. Reinstalling the app does not remove saved Games streaks or statistics according to NYT, but a sign-in mismatch can make the correct data appear absent.

How to tell whether NYT Connections is down
There is no authoritative incident-rate or outage-percentage figure published in the troubleshooting guidance, so a precise probability cannot be assigned to a failure. Use controlled comparisons instead.
- Open the direct Connections web page.
- Try the Games app or News app.
- Repeat the test on a different network.
- Ask another player, on a different connection, whether the puzzle loads.
- Check whether other NYT games load in the same app or browser.
A failure limited to one app, browser, device, or network is unlikely to be a service-wide outage. A simultaneous failure across the website and apps, on different networks and devices, is stronger evidence of a broad NYT problem. In that situation, local cache clearing may not help; save the time and symptoms, then report the incident through Connections when access returns or through NYT’s support feedback route.
Report a persistent failure with useful details
If Connections fails in the app and on the web after you have tested another browser and network, send feedback rather than repeating the same resets. In the game, open the question-mark icon, choose Feedback, describe the problem, and submit it.

Include details that let support reproduce the failure:
- Device model and operating-system version.
- NYT app version or browser name and version.
- Whether you were signed in, and which account behavior changed after signing out.
- Network type: home Wi-Fi, work or school network, cellular data, VPN, or other filter.
- The exact error text, or a precise description such as “grid loads but Submit does nothing.”
- Whether the direct website, Games app, and News app each worked or failed.
- Whether other NYT games loaded normally.
- The local date and approximate time, especially if the failure occurred near midnight.
- What you already tried: update, force-quit, re-login, reinstall, cookie clearing, extension test, and network change.
A screenshot can help show a blank board or error message, but remove email addresses, subscription details, or other personal information before sending it.
Decision guide: choose the next action from the symptom
| Result of your test | Next action |
|---|---|
| Website works; app fails | Update the app and operating system, force-quit, sign in again, then reinstall if needed. |
| App works; one browser fails | Clear NYT cache and cookies, allow cookies, update the browser, and test extensions one at a time. |
| Private window works; normal window fails | Remove stale NYT site data or identify the conflicting extension. |
| Another network works | Investigate Wi-Fi, DNS, firewall, VPN, or filtering rules instead of reinstalling the app. |
| Signed-out play works; signed-in play fails | Clear the NYT session, sign in with the correct account, and report the account-specific failure if it persists. |
| Every surface fails for multiple people | Collect the time and error details and report it as a possible broad service incident. |
| Failure occurs only at the daily changeover | Wait until midnight has passed in your timezone, then reload the game. |
Prevent the same problem from recurring
- Keep the NYT app and device operating system current.
- Use a normal browser window with cookies enabled for NYTimes.com when playing on the web.
- Keep a private window or second browser available as a quick diagnostic, not as a replacement for fixing a broken profile.
- Remember which email address holds your Games progress before signing out or reinstalling.
- When a problem appears, note whether other NYT games work and whether changing networks changes the result.
- Avoid disabling security software permanently; restore protections after a controlled test.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop making local changes once you have tested the app and web page, at least one alternate browser context, and a second network. If the same failure remains across those checks, additional cache clearing or reinstalling is unlikely to add information. Submit Feedback from the question-mark menu with the device, version, network, account, timing, and exact symptom details so NYT can investigate the server or account state.
