NYT Connections #1223 for Friday, October 16, 2026, groups the 16 words into surface imperfections, landlocked countries, altered European country names, and words beginning with synonyms for “stylish.” Hints appear first, followed by the full categories and explanations.

Today’s Connections hints

Connections asks you to divide a 16-word board into four groups of four. Each group has a shared link, but several words are designed to fit more than one possible pattern. The puzzle is available through the NYT Games website and mobile app, as noted by GameDaily’s guide.

Connections #1223 answers

The 16 entries are BULGARI, CHAD, CHICKEN, CHIP, COOLIDGE, CYRUS, HIPPO, HUNGARY, HUNGRY, LAOS, MARK, NICK, PARAGUAY, SCRATCH, SMARTIES, and SPAN. Current answer listings, including Five Letter Words’ entry for October 16 and LinkedIn Pinpoint Answer’s guide, identify these four categories:

Category Answers
Surface imperfections CHIP, MARK, NICK, SCRATCH
Landlocked countries CHAD, HUNGARY, LAOS, PARAGUAY
European countries minus or changing a letter BULGARI, CYRUS, HUNGRY, SPAN
Starting with words for “stylish” CHICKEN, COOLIDGE, HIPPO, SMARTIES

How each group works

Yellow: surface imperfections

CHIP, MARK, NICK, and SCRATCH can all describe damage, blemishes, or other imperfections on a surface. A chip can remove a small piece, a mark can leave a visible spot, a nick is a small cut or notch, and a scratch is a thin abrasion. This is the most literal group, making it a useful starting point once the board’s misleading overlaps are set aside.

Green: landlocked countries

CHAD, HUNGARY, LAOS, and PARAGUAY are sovereign countries without a coastline. Their inclusion creates a potential trap because HUNGARY also participates in the spelling-based blue group through HUNGRY. In Connections, a word belongs to only one final group, so identifying all four landlocked countries requires recognizing that HUNGARY is the country itself while HUNGRY is the altered form used elsewhere.

Blue: European country names with a letter removed or changed

This group starts with the European country names Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, and Spain, then uses the forms shown on the board:

  • BULGARI is Bulgaria without its final A.
  • CYRUS changes the P in Cyprus to S.
  • HUNGRY is Hungary without its final A.
  • SPAN is Spain without the I.

The category is about manipulating the spelling rather than finding four countries exactly as normally written. That distinction explains why HUNGRY appears alongside the unchanged country HUNGARY.

Purple: starting with words meaning “stylish”

CHICKEN, COOLIDGE, HIPPO, and SMARTIES begin with words that can mean stylish:

  • CHIC + KEN = CHICKEN
  • COOL + IDGE = COOLIDGE
  • HIP + PO = HIPPO
  • SMART + IES = SMARTIES

The words after the prefixes are not definitions of the resulting answers; the connection is the shared beginning. This is the puzzle’s most wordplay-heavy category and is typically easier to confirm after the more direct groups are removed.

A practical solving order

  1. Look for the obvious surface-damage set: CHIP, MARK, NICK, and SCRATCH.
  2. Scan the remaining words for countries with no sea access. CHAD, LAOS, and PARAGUAY point toward the landlocked category; HUNGARY completes it.
  3. Compare the leftover country-like forms with standard European names. BULGARI, CYRUS, HUNGRY, and SPAN reveal the letter-manipulation rule.
  4. Use the final four words to verify the prefix pattern CHIC, COOL, HIP, and SMART.

Always submit a group only when all four entries satisfy the same rule. A correct-looking trio can conceal a cross-category decoy, as HUNGARY and HUNGRY demonstrate.
