What you are solving in Connections
A Connections board contains 16 words. Your objective is to identify four sets of four words that share a common theme, then submit each set. The New York Times says every puzzle has exactly one solution. The difficulty comes from intentional overlap: a word can appear to fit more than one category until the remaining words reveal the intended grouping.

A connection may be a straightforward meaning, a word that commonly follows another term, a proper name, or another language-based relationship. The game does not publish a universal list of category types, so treat each board as a fresh deduction problem rather than looking for a fixed catalog of patterns.

How the colors signal difficulty
Each group receives a color that indicates its relative difficulty:
- Yellow: the easiest category.
- Green: harder than yellow.
- Blue: harder than green.
- Purple: the trickiest category.
The colors describe the intended challenge level, not the order in which you must solve the groups. Finding a purple set first is allowed; the board does not require you to begin with yellow.
How to use hints without spoiling the answer
The official support option is the Connections Companion, a community forum linked from the New York Times Games support materials. Anyone can read hints, leave comments, and see the community difficulty score. It is a separate support destination, not a hint button built into the puzzle board.

Open only the hint material you need, stop reading as soon as it identifies a useful direction, and avoid comments posted after the puzzle was released if you are especially spoiler-sensitive.
A spoiler-safe hint routine
- Make one pass over all 16 words and write down possible relationships before opening any outside help.
- Commit only to a category that has four words with a precise, defensible connection; a vague association is usually the trap.
- If you are stuck, consult the Companion for a broad nudge rather than a full solution.
- Return to the board and test the proposed relationship against every remaining word.
- Read comments only when you accept that they may disclose the answer.
The official help page does not document an in-game hint system, so descriptions of a built-in hint button would be inaccurate.

Mistakes, submissions, and what the statistics mean
Connections records several kinds of performance. The labels in the official statistics panel have specific meanings:

| Win Rate | The percentage of puzzles won by completing them in fewer than four mistakes, calculated across all puzzles played. |
| Current Streak | Your consecutive daily wins. |
| Max Streak | The longest daily winning run recorded on your account. |
| Perfect Puzzles | Puzzles solved with zero mistakes. |
| Mistake Histogram | A distribution of puzzles solved with zero, one, two, three, or four mistakes. |
These are account metrics, not population averages. The New York Times has not published a player-wide study or benchmark in the cited help material, so a percentage shown in your account should not be interpreted as the average performance of all players.

What is and is not documented about an incorrect guess
The official page defines the statistics above but does not fully explain the board response after every incorrect submission or spell out the exact end-state at the final allowed mistake. You can rely on the published definitions: a win is a completion in fewer than four mistakes, and the histogram includes solved puzzles with zero through four mistakes. Avoid assuming that an unlisted animation, warning, or late-stage behavior is an official rule.
For your own records, distinguish a perfect solve from a win with errors. Both can count as completed wins under the published win-rate definition, while only the zero-mistake result increases Perfect Puzzles.
When the daily puzzle resets
The New York Times states: The daily Connections game is released daily at midnight in your timezone.
The relevant time zone is the one associated with your play session, so the calendar change at your local midnight determines the boundary for that day’s puzzle.

Your current streak counts consecutive daily wins. To keep it, solve the puzzle before local midnight. The Help Center warns: If you finish a puzzle after midnight local time, your streak will be broken and a new streak will begin.
In practical terms, a puzzle opened before midnight but completed after midnight is still late for streak purposes.
Playing close to midnight
- Check the local clock, not the time displayed on a device configured for another region.
- Leave enough time to reason through a difficult purple category; starting at 11:59 p.m. creates unnecessary risk.
- If the date changes before you finish, expect the existing streak to end rather than relying on the puzzle’s original opening time.
The New York Times says a Connections streak cannot be reset once it has been broken. There is no supported recovery step for restoring the previous run, so prevention is the only reliable strategy.
Daily play, archives, and subscriber-only features
Connections is free to play on all platforms for the daily game. Historical play is different: the official page says the archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. An NYT account is required for archive progress and history.
Archive puzzles can change your aggregate record. They contribute to Puzzles Completed, Win Rate, Perfect Puzzles, and Mistake Distribution. They do not extend Current Streak or Max Streak, because those streak measures depend only on the puzzle released that day.
A completed archive puzzle cannot be replayed. That restriction matters if you want to practice a category or show a particular board to someone else: finishing it once records the result, but does not create a repeatable challenge on the same account.

Connections Bot
The Connections Bot is a separate feature limited to All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers, according to the Help Center. Subscription names and access rules can change, so verify the current entitlement on the official support page before subscribing for this feature alone.

A practical solving method
1. Scan for the strongest group
Look for four words linked by a narrow, verifiable idea. A category that depends on a loose interpretation is less trustworthy than one with a clear shared meaning. Mark possible groups mentally, but do not lock in a set until all four members fit better than any alternative.
2. Test the leftovers
After identifying a likely set, examine the remaining 12 words as a new board. The intended solution is global: a word that fits your first idea may be needed elsewhere. Ask whether removing one candidate makes a different, tighter group appear.
3. Treat familiar phrases as traps
Common words often support several associations. Compare the exact relationship among all four candidates rather than accepting a category because two or three words fit. This is the main reason the puzzle can feel ambiguous even though NYT says it has one solution.
4. Reserve time for the hardest category
Yellow is designed to be the most accessible and purple the most difficult, but you can solve in any order. If only four unusual words remain, search for a shared wordplay or specialized reference instead of forcing them into a broad topic.
5. Protect your mistake count
Because the published win-rate rule distinguishes completion in fewer than four mistakes and the histogram records zero through four, deliberate guessing is a poor substitute for testing a category. When two sets overlap, revisit the full board before submitting.
Troubleshooting common situations
“I need help, but I do not want the answer.”
Use the Connections Companion only for a broad hint, then stop before reading comments. Community replies may contain spoilers, and the forum is not an in-game control that reveals a measured clue.
“My archive solve did not increase my streak.”
That is expected under the published rules. Archive play affects aggregate completion and mistake statistics, while Current Streak and Max Streak are tied to the daily release.
“I finished after midnight and lost my run.”
The local date boundary controls streak eligibility. NYT says a late finish breaks the streak and starts a new one, and broken Connections streaks cannot be reset.
“The statistics show four mistakes. Was the puzzle still a win?”
The Help Center defines Win Rate as puzzles completed in fewer than four mistakes and separately lists a histogram from zero through four mistakes. It does not provide a fuller explanation of every final-mistake state, so use the account’s recorded result rather than assuming how an undocumented edge case is classified.
“Can I replay a completed archive board?”
No. The official archive description says completed archive puzzles cannot be replayed on the account that completed them.
