NVMe-oF vs Local NVMe Storage for AI and HPC Workloads

Choose local NVMe when a node can hold its working set and the fastest, simplest data path matters. Choose NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) when multiple nodes need shared capacity, datasets exceed local drives, or storage must scale independently from compute. Neither architecture is universally faster. Local NVMe avoids a fabric hop, while NVMe-oF adds a networked path whose latency and throughput depend on the transport, topology, host and target implementations, and workload.

For a defensible decision, measure application-level ingest, data loading, checkpoint, restore, and scratch performance on representative systems. Drive headline bandwidth alone cannot predict accelerator utilization or cluster-level results.

What local NVMe and NVMe-oF actually are

Local NVMe: PCIe storage inside the compute node

A local NVMe SSD is attached directly to the server, normally through PCIe. The operating system and applications address that device through the node’s local storage stack, with no storage-network traversal. This makes local NVMe a natural choice for node-local working sets, temporary files, caches, and scratch data whose capacity requirements are bounded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local capacity is tied to the server that contains it. Other nodes cannot normally use the drive as shared block storage unless you add a separate serving or replication layer. Replacing or expanding capacity therefore tends to happen per node, and compute and storage scale together.

NVMe over Fabrics: NVMe commands sent to a remote target

NVMe-oF transports NVMe commands between a host and a remote storage target over a fabric. The target may expose SSDs or a larger storage pool, while several hosts access that capacity according to the target’s namespaces, multipathing, and access controls. The result is a disaggregated model: storage can be expanded independently of compute and presented to multiple nodes.

NVM Express defines NVMe-oF transports for TCP, RDMA, and Fibre Channel. Current transport definitions are part of the NVMe 2.0 specification material; the separate NVMe-oF specification page is labeled a historical reference by NVM Express (NVM Express historical NVMe-oF specification page). The NVMe over RDMA transport page lists revision 1.3 as ratified on July 31, 2026 (NVM Express NVMe over RDMA Transport Specification). NVM Express lists NVMe/TCP transport specification revision 1.3 among specifications current on August 4, 2026.

The decision in one view

Decision axis Local NVMe NVMe-oF
Data path Direct PCIe connection in the server. NVMe commands cross a network fabric to a remote target.
Sharing Attached to one node unless separately served or replicated. Centralized or pooled capacity can be presented to multiple hosts, subject to target, fabric, and access configuration.
Scaling Add capacity per node; storage and compute generally scale together. Scale storage and compute independently and allocate capacity where needed.
Latency and throughput Avoids network traversal, but still depends on SSD, PCIe topology, software, and I/O pattern. Includes fabric and protocol effects; transport, congestion, target media, queues, and host software determine results.
Operations Fewer shared-target and fabric dependencies. Requires compatible initiators and targets, fabric configuration, multipathing, monitoring, and failure procedures.
Typical AI/HPC role Per-node working set, cache, staging area, or scratch space. Large shared datasets, disaggregated capacity, and cross-node access.

Why AI storage behavior changes by phase

“AI workloads are complex and dynamic, consisting of multiple phases (e.g., data ingest, data preprocessing, training, checkpointing, archiving) with differing storage demands in each phase,” NVM Express explains in its AI and NVMe-oF article. Treating training as one uniform I/O workload hides the bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Phase What can become the bottleneck Questions to measure
Ingest Moving raw data into the platform and validating it. How long does each batch take to land, and can ingest run without competing with training reads?
Preprocessing Many small reads and writes, metadata operations, and temporary intermediates. What are the I/O-size distribution, queue depth, concurrency, and temporary-space requirements?
Training Input pipelines failing to feed accelerators consistently. What percentage of time are GPUs or other accelerators waiting for data?
Checkpointing Large synchronized writes that can pause or throttle jobs. How long is checkpoint save, and does it interfere with other jobs?
Restore and recovery Reading state back before a job can resume or move to another node. Can a different GPU or node access the same state without copying it first?
Archiving Capacity, retention, and background transfers rather than peak latency. Can archival traffic be isolated from latency-sensitive training and scratch I/O?

For training, first determine whether the dataset can be staged to each node’s local drives and whether the resulting duplication, staging time, and capacity use are acceptable. NVM Express identifies NVMe-oF as useful when data exceeds local node capacity or when sharing is required, and points to checkpoint save and restore as storage-sensitive operations. Those are use-case observations, not a universal benchmark result.

How HPC clusters should frame the choice

HPC applications vary from per-node scratch and streaming reads to coordinated parallel writes and shared checkpoints. Local NVMe keeps temporary data physically close to each rank and avoids dependence on a shared target. NVMe-oF can provide a common block-storage pool, simplify access to data that moves between nodes, and let administrators add storage without adding compute servers.

Do not infer cluster performance from a peak SSD specification. SNIA’s NVMe-oF study describes tests using synthetic and real-world workloads, RDMA variants (iWARP and RoCEv2), TCP, 100Gb Ethernet, 1,500-byte and 9,000-byte MTUs, and different flash LUNs. Those variables can materially change a result, so a useful comparison reports them rather than publishing one number as an architecture-wide guarantee.

Transport choices inside NVMe-oF

NVMe/TCP

NVMe/TCP uses conventional Ethernet and IP networks. It is generally the easiest transport to introduce where the organization already operates Ethernet, but CPU processing, congestion, interrupt behavior, switch configuration, and target implementation affect latency and throughput. Revision 1.3 is identified in NVM Express specifications current on August 4, 2026.

NVMe over RDMA

RDMA provides a low-overhead memory-to-memory data path. NVM Express describes it as “a way of exchanging information between two computers’ main memory in a network without involving the processor, cache, or OS of either computer.” In practice, RDMA still requires a correctly configured end-to-end system. RoCEv2 and iWARP have different network requirements, and congestion control, MTU, queue pairs, adapter firmware, and switch settings can determine whether the intended benefit appears.

“RDMA” by itself is not a performance guarantee. The host driver, target software, flash media, network topology, and workload all remain part of the measured path.

Fibre Channel

NVMe over Fibre Channel uses a Fibre Channel fabric and is relevant where that operational model, zoning, and installed infrastructure already exist. It should be evaluated with the same application-level tests as TCP and RDMA rather than assumed to be faster or slower.

GPU-direct paths: useful, but not magic

NVIDIA’s GPUDirect Storage design can move data from local or remote NVMe directly toward GPU memory, avoiding CPU bounce buffers when the supported software, drivers, adapters, storage, and configuration are present. The path can therefore be local or remote; GPU-direct does not make remote storage identical to local storage for every workload. Check the compatibility requirements for the exact platform instead of treating a historical demonstration as a current support matrix.

In a 2019 demonstration, NVIDIA reported 3.8× lower end-to-end latency and up to 8.8× throughput for a RAPIDS cuDF CSV reader compared with its original implementation. That comparison was a specific GPUDirect Storage workload, not an NVMe-oF-versus-local-NVMe test. The same article reported additive bandwidth from system memory, local NVMe drives, and remote NVMe-oF or RAID storage exceeding 215 GB/s into GPU memory on a DGX-2 system, compared with a 50 GB/s CPU system-memory path. These are historical, system-specific measurements and should not be used as expected results for a current deployment. NVIDIA also reported TPC-H Query 4 speedups of 6.7× at 1 TB and 32.8× at 10 TB in that GPU-accelerated query demonstration; those figures likewise do not establish a general storage-architecture winner.

When local NVMe is the better engineering choice

  • The working set fits on each node, or a deliberate staging step can load it before the job starts.
  • Temporary files and scratch data benefit from the shortest available path.
  • Jobs are isolated by node and do not need concurrent access to one shared block namespace.
  • The team wants fewer dependencies on switches, fabrics, target controllers, and shared-failure domains.
  • Capacity growth naturally follows compute growth and per-node duplication is affordable.

Local storage still needs capacity planning, endurance validation, PCIe-lane checks, firmware management, monitoring, and a recovery plan. “Local” removes a network hop; it does not remove device failures or software bottlenecks.

When NVMe-oF is the better engineering choice

  • Datasets or checkpoints exceed practical per-node capacity.
  • Several nodes or GPU servers must access the same data without maintaining copies on every node.
  • Storage should scale independently from compute, such as when GPU capacity grows faster than the storage fleet.
  • Data placement must remain flexible so a job can resume on a different node or GPU set.
  • A shared target, fabric, and operations team can provide the required availability and performance.

The trade-off is a larger failure and troubleshooting surface: initiator drivers, transport sessions, adapters, switches, target controllers, flash media, namespaces, and multipath behavior all matter. Shared capacity also creates contention unless bandwidth, queues, quality-of-service policy, and tenant isolation are designed explicitly.

A practical evaluation procedure

  1. Map the application phases. Record ingest, preprocessing, training reads, checkpoint writes, restore reads, and archival transfers separately. Note whether each phase is sequential or random, read-heavy or write-heavy, and sensitive to tail latency.
  2. Measure the baseline. Run the application with local NVMe and capture job time, accelerator utilization, data-loader wait time, checkpoint duration, restore duration, I/O sizes, queue depth, concurrency, and read/write mix.
  3. Build an equivalent NVMe-oF path. Keep the application, dataset, node count, and target media comparable. Record whether the transport is TCP, RoCEv2, iWARP, or Fibre Channel; document network speed, topology, MTU, host and target software, adapter firmware, and multipathing.
  4. Test realistic contention. Run the expected number of concurrent jobs and include checkpoint and background-archive traffic. A quiet single-client test can hide fabric or target contention.
  5. Test failure and recovery. Pull a path or disable a target interface in a controlled maintenance window, then measure I/O error behavior, failover time, job interruption, and restore procedure. For local drives, test device failure assumptions and node replacement instead.
  6. Check capacity economics. Compare usable capacity, replication or backup requirements, staging duplication, expansion steps, and the cost of adding storage-only versus compute nodes. Include network adapters, switches, target systems, and operations effort for NVMe-oF.
  7. Choose from application results. Prefer the architecture that meets job-time, utilization, availability, and operational objectives under representative load—not the one with the highest isolated device bandwidth.

Metrics that make a comparison credible

Metric Why it matters
End-to-end job time Shows whether storage changes the result users actually care about.
Accelerator idle or wait time Reveals whether input delivery, checkpointing, or restore is limiting expensive compute.
Checkpoint and restore duration Captures pause time and recovery readiness rather than only steady-state reads.
Tail latency Exposes stalls hidden by average latency, especially under concurrent jobs.
Throughput by I/O size and queue depth Connects measurements to the application’s actual access pattern.
CPU utilization and interrupt load Shows whether the storage path consumes host resources that could run preprocessing or orchestration.
Capacity utilization and sharing efficiency Quantifies duplication avoided by a pool and wasted capacity from overprovisioning.
Recovery behavior Measures the operational cost of path, target, device, or node failures.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming remote always means slow

A fabric adds a remote path, but the result depends on the complete system. A well-designed NVMe-oF pool may deliver the capacity or concurrency a local-only design cannot provide. Measure the application and report the transport and topology.

Assuming RDMA automatically wins

RDMA reduces protocol overhead in suitable configurations, but poor congestion control, mismatched MTUs, firmware issues, or an overloaded target can erase the advantage. Validate the complete RDMA path and compare it with a properly configured TCP path.

Benchmarking only large sequential transfers

Training input, metadata, preprocessing, and checkpoints may use different I/O sizes and concurrency. Replay the real distribution and include synchronization points.

Ignoring checkpoint restore

A design that writes checkpoints quickly but restores them slowly can lengthen recovery or migration. Treat save and restore as separate tests.

Using historical GPU demonstrations as current guarantees

The NVIDIA figures cited above came from 2019, named systems, and specific software. Use them to understand the potential of a direct GPU path, not to predict present-day NVMe-oF or local-NVMe performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving failure behavior out of the architecture decision

Local drives and remote pools fail differently. Document what happens when a device, path, adapter, switch, target controller, or node disappears, and verify that behavior before production.

Bottom-line decision framework

Select local NVMe for bounded, node-local working sets and scratch where simplicity and the shortest path are priorities. Select NVMe-oF for shared or oversized datasets, independent storage scaling, and workflows that benefit from flexible access across nodes. For many AI and HPC platforms, a hybrid design is appropriate: local NVMe handles hot scratch and staged data, while NVMe-oF supplies shared datasets, checkpoints, or capacity that cannot be duplicated per node.

The right answer is the one demonstrated by representative application runs with documented transport, hardware, software, contention, capacity, and recovery conditions. No current neutral statistic establishes a universal local-versus-NVMe-oF winner for AI or HPC workloads.
