Nvidia’s latest financing arrangements could help fund AI infrastructure, but they also connect the company’s chip sales to the customers and projects it supports financially. The clearest example is a conditional guarantee capped at $105 billion for defined lease and power obligations tied to a planned data center in Ohio—not a $105 billion payment. Whether the arrangements benefit the wider economy depends on whether the infrastructure is completed, finds sustained use and earns enough to justify its costs.

What is Nvidia’s latest circular financing plan?

There are two related but distinct August 2026 developments: a guarantee for a specific Ohio data-center project, and preliminary financing platforms intended to attract capital from outside investors. Neither is simply Nvidia paying a customer to buy its chips. The concern is that Nvidia’s financial support may help create demand for infrastructure that is expected to use Nvidia systems, giving the company both commercial upside and exposure if the project or customer struggles.

The Ohio project: a conditional guarantee

Nvidia’s August 2026 Form 10-Q describes guarantees capped at $105 billion for defined portions of lease and power payments connected to a planned site at the PORTS Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio. The project involves SB Energy affiliates building the land, power and shell infrastructure for an OpenAI affiliate. The leases cover approximately 4.25 gigawatts of IT load and run for 20 years.

The cap is maximum gross exposure under the disclosed guarantees. It is not an immediate cash outlay, the construction cost of the whole site, or a guarantee of every obligation of every tenant. SB Energy is to build, own and operate the site, while an OpenAI affiliate is to lease it. Nvidia says the infrastructure is intended to host Nvidia AI systems exclusively, subject to limited exceptions.

The broader platforms: a target for third-party capital

On August 10, 2026, Nvidia announced memorandums of understanding with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to establish independent compute-financing platforms. Nvidia says the platforms are designed to mobilize more than $500 billion of third-party capital for AI infrastructure over time. That is an aggregate design goal—not Nvidia revenue, a single fund, funding committed to one customer or money assigned to the Ohio project. Nvidia’s filing cautions that the preliminary arrangements may not result in definitive agreements.

How does the $105 billion guarantee work?

The guarantee covers defined lease and power payment obligations rather than the site’s entire construction budget. Under the terms described in Nvidia’s filing, the guarantees generally take effect when the relevant leases begin. Their amounts increase as each of nine construction phases is completed; the first phase is expected in Nvidia’s fiscal year 2029.

Payment obligations can be triggered by certain tenant defaults. As OpenAI makes lease payments over the 20-year terms, the guaranteed exposure declines. The guarantees can also end under specified conditions, including OpenAI obtaining a satisfactory credit rating or the applicable lease expiring. Nvidia has, at its discretion, an option to provide support for approximately 3.8 additional gigawatts; that option is not the same as a guarantee already in force.

Nvidia also announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy. The company said the Ohio plans include at least 10 gigawatts of new generation and at least $4.2 billion in regional grid infrastructure. These are announced plans, not completed power or grid capacity. Nvidia says phases of the data-center project are expected to come online beginning in 2028.

Is this circular financing?

“Circular financing” is a useful description of overlapping incentives and risks here, not a settled technical verdict or proof of wrongdoing. Nvidia supplies the compute systems and has an interest in expanding demand for them. Its guarantee can support a project whose infrastructure is intended to use Nvidia systems. If the customer pays and demand holds, Nvidia may benefit from hardware sales while the project and its other partners earn returns. If the customer or project falters, Nvidia’s financial exposure could worsen at the same time that demand for its systems weakens.

The structure differs from Nvidia simply lending a customer money to buy chips: the Ohio support is a conditional guarantee on specified obligations, while the wider platforms are intended to draw capital from institutional investors. Still, those distinctions do not remove the commercial link between Nvidia’s support and demand for its products.

How the separate arrangements compare

Arrangement Form of support or capital What is established about exposure Connection to compute demand
Ohio data-center project, announced August 2026 Nvidia guarantees defined lease and power obligations; Nvidia also announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy. Guarantee cap of $105 billion; generally phases in with nine construction phases and declines as lease payments are made. The planned site is intended to host Nvidia infrastructure, subject to limited exceptions.
Compute-financing platforms, announced August 10, 2026 MOUs with six financial institutions for platforms intended to mobilize third-party capital. More than $500 billion is an aggregate target over time; the preliminary arrangements may not become definitive agreements. Nvidia says institutional providers independently assess demand, utilization, cash flow and residual value. It says any residual-value support may cover up to 25% of an individual opportunity, assessed project by project.
Earlier OpenAI framework, announced September 22, 2025 A letter of intent for at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centers, alongside Nvidia’s intention to invest progressively in OpenAI. Nvidia described an intention to invest up to $100 billion as systems are deployed; this is not evidence that the full amount was invested. The investment intention was tied to deployment under that separate framework, not the later Ohio guarantee.

The figures in this table describe different things—an exposure cap, an intended capital-mobilization target, and an investment intention. Adding them together would not produce a meaningful measure of Nvidia’s spending or the financing committed to the Ohio site.

What could the plan mean for the economy?

Potential upside if projects are completed and used

Large data centers require coordinated financing for sites, power, grid connections and computing equipment. Support that makes those pieces financeable could help bring construction forward and attract investment in regional energy infrastructure. If the resulting computing capacity is used productively, businesses and other users could build services around it. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang described the company’s role as helping create “a new class of productive, investable infrastructure: AI factories.” That is Nvidia’s characterization; it does not establish the project’s eventual productivity or its effect on GDP.

For the Ohio site, the practical economic opportunity depends on delivery: planned construction, generation and grid investment must become operating assets, and the capacity must find paying use. The project’s announced scale alone does not show how many lasting jobs it will create, what returns investors will earn or how much economic output it will generate.

Risks if demand, construction or payments disappoint

Nvidia’s filing warns that if OpenAI fails to perform and a guarantee is triggered, Nvidia could assume lease obligations or incur costs. It may not find a replacement tenant or buyer on acceptable terms, and reimbursement or indemnification may not be prompt or complete. Construction delays could also leave infrastructure unavailable when expected. More broadly, if AI demand, utilization, pricing or useful asset life falls short of assumptions, debt and investment linked to the buildout could come under pressure. That is a risk scenario, not a prediction that a loss will occur.

The exposure is not limited to the Ohio guarantees. In its July 26, 2026 disclosure, Nvidia reported $99 billion in equity investments and $25 billion in equity investment commitments. It also reported $36 billion in commitments under a model in which it contracts for cloud services from select AI cloud partners. Those are separate, company-wide disclosure categories; they should not be attributed to the Ohio project or combined with its guarantee cap as if all were the same kind of obligation.

What should readers conclude?

Nvidia’s plan could help finance infrastructure that supports construction and future computing services, but the available company disclosures do not establish the eventual return or economy-wide benefit. The same arrangements create a two-sided exposure: Nvidia can benefit if supported projects generate demand for its systems, and it may face costs if a customer defaults or infrastructure cannot find viable use. The key question is therefore not just how large the announced figures are, but who ultimately pays, how much capacity gets built, and whether users generate durable demand for it.

Before the August announcement, Axios reported press accounts describing a possible $250 billion guarantee and a separate potential chip-financing deal. Those were preliminary reported figures, not final terms; Nvidia’s subsequent filing disclosed the Ohio guarantee cap of $105 billion and its conditions.
