Nvidia Stock Nears a Recent High: Why It Can Still Look Cheap Relative to Earnings

Nvidia can look less expensive relative to future earnings even when its share price is high—but that case depends on earnings forecasts continuing to rise. As of October 2, 2026, one data provider put the stock’s trailing price-to-earnings ratio at 29.58 and its forward P/E at 19.41. Those figures frame a growth-based valuation argument, not proof that NVDA is objectively cheap. The available price data shows a $237.88 intraday high that day, but does not establish it was an all-time record.

Why a high share price does not settle the valuation question

A share price tells you what one share costs; by itself, it does not tell you whether the company is expensive. Investors commonly compare the share price with earnings per share (EPS), producing a price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E. A company’s market capitalization—the value of all its shares combined—is another measure of size, not a substitute for a valuation multiple.

The distinction matters here: a recent price peak concerns the share price, while the “still looks cheap” thesis concerns how that price compares with earnings, especially expected future earnings. Neither measure makes the other one true. And because the cited October 2 market-history excerpt does not confirm a lifetime high, it is safer to describe that session as a recent high rather than call it a record.

What Nvidia’s latest results say about the growth case

NVIDIA reported $96.2 billion in revenue for Q2 FY2027, the quarter ended July 26, 2026. Revenue rose 106% year over year and 18% from the previous quarter. The company reported a 75.0% GAAP gross margin and GAAP diluted EPS of $2.46.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Those results help explain why investors may be willing to value Nvidia on future earnings: rapid sales growth can translate into a larger earnings base. But one quarter’s growth rate does not establish how long that pace will last, or whether future earnings will meet the expectations already reflected in the share price.

Management’s next-quarter outlook

For Q3 FY2027, NVIDIA forecast revenue of $108 billion, plus or minus 2%. The company said this outlook assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. It is management guidance—not a reported result—and actual revenue could differ.

Management’s view of AI demand

In the August 26, 2026 earnings release, CEO Jensen Huang said, “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue,” This is management’s characterization of the opportunity, not independent confirmation that demand or profits will persist.

How the P/E figures support—and limit—the “cheap” argument

A trailing P/E uses earnings already reported; a forward P/E uses projected earnings. If projected earnings rise, the same share price produces a lower forward multiple. That is the core of the case that a stock can look cheaper relative to expected earnings even near a price high. The forward figure is not a promise: it depends on estimates that can change, as well as on the share price.

Measure Reported figure What it tells you
NVDA close, October 2, 2026 $233.95; Stock Analysis The quoted closing share price for that session, not a valuation measure.
NVDA intraday high, October 2, 2026 $237.88; Stock Analysis A session high; the cited excerpt does not establish an all-time record.
Trailing P/E, checked October 3, 2026 29.58; Stock Analysis A multiple based on trailing earnings, according to that provider.
Forward P/E, checked October 3, 2026 19.41; Stock Analysis A lower forecast-based multiple from the same provider; it relies on projected earnings.
Forward P/E, October 2, 2026 25.64; FinanceCharts A different provider’s estimate, illustrating that forward figures vary by source and methodology.

The difference between 19.41 and 25.64 is material. Forward P/E is not a single directly observed fact like a closing price; providers can use different estimates or methods. The figures above are not a reconciled consensus, and the available information does not establish Nvidia’s current multiple against its own historical range or a reliable peer group. So the lower Stock Analysis forward multiple can illustrate the growth thesis, but it cannot by itself prove the shares are cheap.

What could weaken the valuation case

Margins may face pressure

On the August 26 earnings call, NVIDIA management said gross margin could bottom at 71%–72% in Q4 and settle at 72%–73% in FY2028, citing sharply higher memory costs as one source of pressure. These are forward-looking expectations, not reported margins. If costs reduce profitability more than expected, earnings estimates underlying a forward P/E could come down.

Supply and launch execution matter

Management described supply constraints extending through at least FY2028 and discussed the expected contribution from Vera Rubin. Those are management’s expectations; they do not guarantee a particular launch schedule, shipment volume, or revenue outcome. For the growth thesis to hold, Nvidia must turn demand and available supply into shipped products and earnings.

Inventory and customer payments affect cash conversion

NVIDIA said inventory had increased to $32 billion as it prepared for Vera Rubin, and days sales outstanding (DSO) had reached 60 days, reflecting extended payment terms on some large orders. Neither number alone proves a problem. The useful question is whether inventory converts into shipments and whether billed sales are collected in cash on a healthy basis.

China is excluded from the stated outlook

The Q3 revenue outlook assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. That makes the guidance explicit about one geographic limitation, but future policy, market access, or demand changes could still affect results beyond the quarter covered by that outlook.

How to read the thesis without treating it as a forecast

  • Separate results from estimates. Q2 revenue and GAAP EPS are reported figures; the Q3 revenue outlook and margin expectations are management forecasts.
  • Keep valuation methods consistent. The two forward P/E figures differ, so do not combine one provider’s multiple with another provider’s estimate as if they were a matched comparison.
  • Watch the earnings denominator. A forward P/E can rise even if the share price is unchanged when expected earnings are cut; it can also fall if earnings estimates increase.
  • Track whether growth converts to profit and cash. Revenue growth, margin expectations, supply execution, inventory, and customer collections all bear on the earnings assumptions behind the valuation.

On the available figures, “cheap” is best understood as a conditional view: Nvidia’s rapid reported growth and lower provider-estimated forward P/E can make the shares look more reasonable relative to future earnings than the trailing multiple suggests. Whether that view holds depends on forecasts that remain uncertain; the evidence here does not establish an intrinsic value or a reliable historical or peer comparison.
