Short answer: NVIDIA Shader Cache Size controls how much disk space the graphics driver may use to retain compiled shaders. SCSKiller is a separate Windows utility that attempts to compile supported games’ pipelines into that driver cache before you play. The setting manages storage; SCSKiller is a precompilation workflow that uses the storage.
They are complementary, not competing replacements. Set an appropriate cache limit in NVIDIA Control Panel, then consider SCSKiller when a supported game has shader-compilation hitches that you want to handle before launching it. Neither option fixes every kind of stutter or guarantees a higher average frame rate.

The difference in one sentence
A game can compile shaders while you are already moving through the world, causing a sudden frame-time spike. NVIDIA’s shader cache stores those compiled results so later runs can reuse them; NVIDIA explains that subsequent runs of the same game do not need to perform the same compilation again when the result is cached (NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference). SCSKiller tries to discover and compile supported pipelines ahead of gameplay, writing them into that same driver cache.
That distinction answers most comparisons:
- NVIDIA Shader Cache Size: a capacity control for retained shader compiles.
- SCSKiller: a utility that attempts to populate the cache before the game needs the shaders.
Changing the NVIDIA value does not start a special precompile session. Running SCSKiller does not replace the driver’s cache or its size limit.

What NVIDIA Shader Cache Size actually controls
It is a storage limit, not a performance mode
The driver compiles game shaders when required and stores the compiled results on disk. The Shader Cache Size control sets the maximum disk space available for those stored compiles. A larger limit gives the driver more room to retain results from the games you normally play; it does not itself compile every shader in a game, and it does not make a GPU render more frames per second.
NVIDIA’s current reference page lists these choices:
| Control value | What it means |
|---|---|
| Disabled | Shader caching is disabled. |
| 128 MB | Maximum cache size of 128 megabytes. |
| 256 MB | Maximum cache size of 256 megabytes. |
| 512 MB | Maximum cache size of 512 megabytes. |
| 1 GB | Maximum cache size of 1 gigabyte. |
| 5 GB | Maximum cache size of 5 gigabytes. |
| 10 GB | Maximum cache size of 10 gigabytes. |
| 100 GB | Maximum cache size of 100 gigabytes. |
| Unlimited | No configured cache ceiling; available disk space still limits what can be stored. |
The labels and available values can change with a driver or Control Panel revision, so use the values shown by your installed version rather than treating this list as a permanent interface specification.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why a limit that is too small can cause hitching
NVIDIA warns that a cache limit that is too small can evict shaders that are still useful. When a later scene needs an evicted shader, the driver may have to compile it again, producing a hitch that the cache was intended to prevent. NVIDIA’s guidance is to choose a limit large enough for the games you normally play while staying within the free space on the drive (NVIDIA documentation).
There is no universal “best” number in the documentation. A system with a small game library and ample free space has different needs from a system that rotates through many large titles. The practical rule is to avoid Disabled unless you have a specific reason, and avoid selecting a limit that competes with the operating system or game installs for scarce disk space.

Driver installation clears the cache
NVIDIA states that installing a new driver deletes the shader cache and that the first run of a game after the installation may stutter while shaders are compiled again (NVIDIA’s reference page). This is normal cache invalidation, not evidence that the setting failed. It also means that a cache built before a driver update cannot be assumed to be available afterward.
How to change the setting
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Open Manage 3D settings.
- Find Shader Cache Size in the available settings.
- Choose a value that accommodates your normal games without exceeding practical free space on the relevant drive.
- Apply the change, then allow games to rebuild any shaders that are no longer present after a driver change or cache reset.
Exact tab names and placement can vary by Control Panel version. The important part is that this control changes the driver’s cache capacity; it is not a per-game pipeline compiler.
What SCSKiller does
It compiles ahead of gameplay
SCSKiller scans installed games, plans pipelines it knows how to handle, and attempts to compile them while the game is closed. The resulting data is placed in the driver’s shader cache, which the game reads when it runs. The project describes this as a way to move shader-compilation work out of active play (SCSKiller’s official site).
Because it writes to the driver cache, SCSKiller still depends on the cache being available and large enough to retain the results. A cache limit that is too small can undermine the value of a large precompile pass by allowing useful entries to be evicted later.
Supported APIs and graphics vendors
The project’s README lists support for DirectX 12 games on NVIDIA and AMD hardware, plus DirectX 11 games on NVIDIA hardware. Compatibility is version-sensitive and depends on what the project can discover for a particular game. The README names libraries including Steam, Epic Games, the EA app, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox PC, Battle.net, PURPLE, HoYoPlay and Gaijin, and it also provides a manual game-add option when automatic discovery does not find a title (SCSKiller’s GitHub README).

A typical SCSKiller workflow
- Check scope first. Confirm that the game uses a supported DirectX version and GPU vendor, and that the current release lists a usable pipeline source.
- Obtain the release. The project says its official downloads are on GitHub Releases. As of its October 2026 README, releases are not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn and Windows 11 Smart App Control may block them.
- Verify the file. Compare the downloaded file’s SHA-256 hash with the value in the release notes before running an unsigned build.
- Scan the libraries. Let SCSKiller search the supported game locations. If a title is not found, use the manual-add function described by the project.
- Queue and compile. Close the game, select the title, and start the compile operation. The utility works through the pipelines it can identify and records the results in the driver cache.
- Launch normally. Start the game after compilation. Any shader that was not found, not recorded, unsupported or invalidated later can still compile during play.
The project’s website says a typical operation took about five minutes per game in its own measurements, but the time depends on the game, GPU, driver and amount of work. Treat that figure as a developer estimate, not a guaranteed duration.
NVIDIA Shader Cache vs. SCSKiller
| Question | NVIDIA Shader Cache Size | SCSKiller |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Retain compiled shaders for reuse on later runs. | Attempt to compile supported pipelines before gameplay. |
| What you change | The maximum disk space available to the driver cache. | A scan, queue and compile workflow for selected games. |
| When it runs | The driver caches results as games compile shaders. | The game is closed while the utility performs its precompilation pass. |
| Where results go | The NVIDIA driver’s shader cache. | The same driver cache used by the game. |
| Compatibility | Applies to games using the driver’s normal shader-cache mechanism. | DirectX 12 on NVIDIA and AMD, and DirectX 11 on NVIDIA, subject to project support. |
| After a driver update | NVIDIA says the cache is deleted and games may stutter on their first run. | The project says it detects driver updates and compiles again. |
| Stutter it targets | Repeated compilation caused by missing or evicted cached shaders. | Compilation work that can be identified and completed before play. |
| What it cannot promise | A larger limit does not guarantee that every shader is precompiled. | It does not address traversal or streaming stutter, and missed or unrecorded shaders can still compile in game. |
When you should change NVIDIA’s cache size
Increase the limit when eviction is plausible
Consider a larger value when you regularly play several demanding games, have adequate free space, and observe compilation hitches returning after earlier runs. The reason to change it is retention: a larger ceiling gives the driver more room to keep useful entries. It is not a substitute for compiling a game’s pipelines ahead of time.
Do not choose a size that creates disk pressure
NVIDIA’s instruction is to stay within available disk space. A nominally large cache is not beneficial if it leaves the system short of room for updates, save files, temporary files or the games themselves. If free space is tight, first decide whether the cache limit or other storage use is the real constraint.
Expect a rebuild after driver installation
If stutter begins immediately after a driver update, allow the game to rebuild its cache or run SCSKiller again when the title is supported. Repeatedly changing the limit will not restore entries that the driver installation removed.

When SCSKiller is worth trying
- A supported DirectX game has repeatable shader-compilation hitches. Precompiling can move identifiable work out of your first minutes of play.
- You are willing to wait before launching. The utility performs work up front, and the duration varies by title and hardware.
- You understand that coverage is partial. A successful pass reduces only the compilation work it found and recorded.
- You have updated the driver. Because the driver cache is cleared by installation, a fresh pass may be useful for a supported game.
SCSKiller is not a sensible choice solely because you want a higher benchmark average. Its stated purpose is shader-compilation stutter, so the benefit should be judged by frame-time hitching in the affected game rather than by an assumption of extra rendering throughput.
Does SCSKiller increase FPS?
It is not an FPS booster in the usual sense. Precompiling shaders does not add GPU rendering capacity, raise a game’s frame-rate limit or optimize every part of its frame. Its potential benefit is fewer severe frame-time spikes when a shader would otherwise compile during traversal or combat.
The project publishes developer measurements to illustrate that effect. In each comparison, the project says it measured roughly five minutes of play, counted shader stutters of at least 20 milliseconds, and used an NVIDIA RTX 5090. These are project measurements, not independent benchmarks:
| Game | Cold-cache stutters | After SCSKiller compilation | Worst stall before | Worst stall after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | 19 | 0 | 76 ms | 5 ms |
| Silent Hill: Townfall | 24 | 0 | 347 ms | 8 ms |
| Hogwarts Legacy | 1,014 | 87 | 2,400 ms | 100 ms |
The results vary by game, GPU and driver, and the project does not present them as a universal guarantee. The Hogwarts Legacy example is especially useful because it shows the limitation clearly: compilation stutter was greatly reduced but not eliminated.

Traversal stutter
Traversal stutter is caused by the game loading or preparing world data as you move through an environment. SCSKiller’s README explicitly distinguishes this from shader compilation. Precompiling shaders does not pre-load every asset or remove an engine’s traversal bottleneck.
Best Value
Streaming stutter
Streaming stutter comes from bringing textures, geometry, audio or other data into memory during play. It is a separate workload from compiling a shader. If a hitch coincides with asset streaming rather than a shader event, changing the cache size or running SCSKiller is unlikely to address the root cause.
Shaders the utility did not record
A game can generate a pipeline only after a particular path, effect or configuration occurs. The project warns that a shader it could not find or record can still compile in game. New content, patches, unusual settings and rarely visited scenes can therefore produce residual hitches even after a successful pass.
Unsupported games and APIs
Games outside the listed DirectX and GPU combinations, or games whose pipeline data the current release cannot interpret, may receive no useful precompilation. A library scan finding the executable is not the same as complete shader coverage.

Security, anti-cheat and privacy considerations
Unsigned releases and SmartScreen
The project’s README says official downloads are on GitHub Releases and, as of the October 2026 documentation, are not code-signed. SmartScreen warnings are therefore possible, and Windows 11 Smart App Control blocks unsigned applications. Do not bypass a warning blindly: obtain the file from the project’s official release page and compare its SHA-256 with the release notes (project README).
Anti-cheat games
SCSKiller says it leaves anti-cheat games alone beyond reading their files, and that its optional recorder is not used for those games. Do not enable the recorder for an anti-cheat title. If a game’s status is unclear, follow the current README rather than experimenting with optional recording features.
What the privacy policy says
The project’s privacy policy, updated October 2, 2026, describes routine downloads of public lists and an anonymous daily activity check; it says that check can be disabled. Optional uploads are opt-in and may reveal a game’s build, GPU vendor, approximate gameplay coverage and middleware DLL names. Frame times remain local, according to the policy (SCSKiller privacy policy).
Review those settings before first use if you do not want the optional network activity or telemetry. The utility’s shader-compilation purpose does not require treating optional sharing as mandatory.
A practical combined workflow
- Set NVIDIA Shader Cache Size to a value that fits the games you normally play and the free space on the drive.
- Install or update the graphics driver, remembering that NVIDIA says the installation clears the existing cache.
- For a supported game with shader-compilation hitches, download SCSKiller from its official GitHub release, verify the SHA-256, and review the current compatibility and anti-cheat notes.
- Scan or manually add the game, close it, and run the compile operation.
- Launch the game and evaluate frame-time hitches rather than expecting an automatic FPS increase.
- If stutter remains, determine whether it is shader compilation, traversal, streaming or an unrecorded shader. Only the first category is SCSKiller’s stated target.
After a future driver installation, repeat the supported-game compilation pass if the game again exhibits shader hitches. If the title is unsupported, rely on the driver cache and the game’s own compilation behavior instead of forcing an unverified workflow.
