NVIDIA Raises SHIELD TV Pro Price by $100: Is the 2019 Device Worth $299.99?

NVIDIA raised the SHIELD TV Pro’s price from $199.99 to $299.99 effective October 2, 2026—a $100, or 50%, increase. The hardware remains the 2019 model built around the Tegra X1+. NVIDIA says substantially higher component costs, including memory, prompted the increase. The new price is hardest to justify for ordinary streaming; the Pro’s strongest case is for people who need its particular media-server, codec, upscaling or gaming features.

Why did NVIDIA raise the price?

NVIDIA’s explanation is rising component costs. An NVIDIA spokesperson told Ars Technica that costs for components, including memory, had increased substantially across the industry. The company did not provide a quantified breakdown of the increase, so the precise contribution of memory or any other component is not established.

The new $299.99 price took effect immediately on October 2, 2026, according to Ars Technica. That is $100 more than the $199.99 launch price reported by Ars and consistent with NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement, which listed the Pro at $199. The standard SHIELD TV launched at $149.

What changed—and what stayed the same?

The price changed; the hardware generation did not. The current Pro is the model introduced in 2019, built around NVIDIA’s Tegra X1+ processor, with 3GB of memory and 16GB of storage listed in NVIDIA’s launch announcement. NVIDIA described the X1+ as offering up to 25% more performance than its predecessor; that was the company’s comparison at launch, not a measurement of the Pro against current devices.

The features that defined the Pro remain the reasons to consider it: AI upscaling, broad video-format support, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, gaming features, two USB ports, and the ability to run Plex Media Server. NVIDIA’s 2019 announcement described the USB ports as suitable for Plex Media Server or high-capacity drives. The price increase does not come with a newly announced processor or hardware refresh.

Which SHIELD model can you buy?

NVIDIA has discontinued the cheaper standard SHIELD TV, leaving the Pro as the continuing model, according to 9to5Google. That changes the choice for buyers: the original $149 entry point is no longer part of NVIDIA’s current lineup. Stock and availability can vary, so check the seller’s listing for the actual price and whether the device is available.

Who should consider paying $299.99?

Media-server and local-library users

The Pro’s pair of USB ports and Plex Media Server capability matter if you want a streamer that can also connect storage or serve a media library. Those are specialized advantages, not necessities for watching subscription apps. Confirm that your planned storage and setup meet your needs before buying; the launch announcement identifies the ports and Plex use but does not specify compatibility with every drive or configuration.

People who care about formats and picture processing

AI upscaling and support for Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and a wide range of codecs make the Pro more appealing when you have compatible content and a television or sound system that can use those formats. These capabilities are not a guarantee that every title will look or sound better: results depend on the source and connected equipment. If you mainly watch Netflix or other standard streaming apps, these features may not justify paying a premium over a cheaper streamer.

Gamers

The SHIELD has gaming support, including GeForce NOW, which may make it useful if cloud gaming is part of your setup. Current sources cited here do not establish a comparison of its gaming performance with newer devices, so treat that as a feature-fit decision rather than evidence that it outperforms newer hardware.

Buyers seeking a basic streaming device

If your priority is simply playing mainstream streaming services, the Pro’s specialist features may go unused. A less expensive streamer is likely the more sensible category to consider, though specific alternatives, prices and availability should be checked against current listings rather than assumed from old comparisons.

Is the SHIELD TV Pro worth $299.99 in 2026?

It can be worth considering if you will use the USB expansion, Plex Media Server, its codec coverage, AI upscaling or gaming support. For a general Netflix viewer, paying 50% more than the Pro’s original launch price for unchanged 2019-generation hardware is difficult to justify unless a particular Pro feature is important to your setup. Before purchasing, compare current alternatives on the formats they support, USB and local-media capabilities, gaming options, software support and actual price; the cited announcements do not establish a head-to-head software-support forecast or current alternative prices.
