NVIDIA MGX is not a single server you can order from a standard catalog. It is a modular reference architecture that lets OEMs and ODMs assemble validated systems—from one accelerated node to a complete AI rack—using different GPUs, CPUs, networking, storage, chassis, cooling, and power designs. Compatibility therefore exists at two levels: what the MGX architecture is designed to accommodate and what a particular system builder has actually validated, supplied, and supports.

What is NVIDIA MGX?

MGX is NVIDIA’s modular reference architecture for accelerated-computing systems. NVIDIA provides architectural building blocks and design patterns; system manufacturers use them to create their own servers, trays, racks, and integrated infrastructure. The result can be a conventional single-node server, a multi-node cluster, or a rack-scale platform in which compute, networking, cooling, power distribution, and service access are designed together.

That distinction matters when you are evaluating a quotation. “MGX” does not identify one fixed motherboard, chassis, bill of materials, operating system, performance level, or price. Two systems carrying the MGX label may use different accelerators, host CPUs, memory capacities, interconnects, storage devices, thermal solutions, and firmware. The OEM’s model number and support matrix—not the architecture name alone—define what you will receive.

NVIDIA describes MGX as an open ecosystem with more than 100 modular design combinations. Its current overview lists support for NVIDIA Blackwell and Rubin GPU solutions, Grace and Vera processors, x86 CPUs, other Arm-based CPUs, several networking choices, AI-oriented storage, and standards including PCIe, OCP, and EIA rack specifications. Those are architectural options, not a promise that every option can be installed in every chassis or mixed without qualification.

MGX is different from HGX

MGX and HGX are related but not interchangeable terms. MGX is a flexible system-design architecture used to build many classes of server and rack. HGX is an NVLink-connected multi-GPU baseboard platform intended to scale AI and high-performance-computing systems. An MGX system may incorporate an HGX-based design, but calling a product “MGX” does not mean it is an HGX baseboard system, and vice versa.

Which hardware is compatible with MGX?

Compatibility should be checked in layers. Start with the architecture’s supported families, then verify the exact combination in the builder’s documentation. A component can be listed as an MGX option while still being unavailable in a particular vendor’s model, cooling configuration, region, or software release.

Accelerators and host processors

NVIDIA’s current MGX material identifies rack-scale and PCIe GPU solutions, alongside Grace and Vera processors, x86 CPUs, and other Arm CPUs. This allows a builder to optimize for dense GPU throughput, balanced CPU-plus-accelerator workloads, memory-heavy analytics, or edge constraints. The processor choice affects socket layout, memory topology, firmware, boot support, power draw, and the interconnect available to GPUs.

An earlier MGX specification announcement gave examples such as 1U, 2U, and 4U chassis, air- or liquid-cooled designs, NVIDIA GPU products, Grace and GH200 processors, and BlueField-3 and ConnectX-7 networking. Those examples describe options announced at that time; they are not evidence that every current MGX chassis supports every one of those parts. Ask the system maker for a current, model-specific compatibility list.

Networking and system fabric

Depending on the workload and scale, an MGX design can use NVLink, Spectrum-X Ethernet, Quantum InfiniBand, BlueField DPUs, or other networking choices identified by NVIDIA. The right fabric depends on whether traffic is primarily within a server, between nodes in a training cluster, between storage and compute, or across tenant and management networks.

Check port counts, link speeds, transceiver or cable requirements, switch compatibility, DPU firmware, topology diagrams, and supported software drivers. A network adapter that fits mechanically may still be unsuitable if the vendor has not validated its firmware, cable lengths, NUMA placement, or orchestration stack with the selected GPUs and CPUs.

Chassis, racks, and standards

MGX supports designs aligned with PCIe, Open Compute Project (OCP), and EIA rack specifications. Standards support makes integration with enterprise and cloud data centers easier, but it does not answer practical installation questions. Confirm the actual external dimensions, rail kit, rack depth, cable bend radius, front and rear service clearances, power connectors, airflow direction, and allowable operating temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For liquid-cooled systems, add coolant distribution units, manifolds, quick-disconnect types, leak detection, facility-water requirements, and service procedures to the checklist. A rack can meet an EIA dimensional standard and still fail to fit your doors, floor loading limits, overhead busway, or cooling loop.

Generation and firmware support

NVIDIA describes MGX as multi-generational. In procurement terms, that means the architecture is intended to evolve, not that an old chassis automatically accepts a new accelerator. Require a written statement of the exact GPU, CPU, memory, NIC or DPU, storage controller, BIOS, BMC, driver, CUDA, and orchestration versions supported together.

Also ask which upgrades are validated. “Upgradeable” may mean a spare slot exists, while a supported upgrade requires power headroom, a new riser or cable set, a firmware update, a different cooling plate, and a revised software image. Get the vendor’s replacement procedure and support policy before you approve a phased deployment.

What can you customize?

MGX customization starts with workload and facility constraints, then moves to component selection. The system builder determines the final GPU, CPU, memory, storage, networking, chassis, thermal design, power delivery, and mechanical arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Design area Typical decision Questions to ask the builder
Accelerator GPU family, count, PCIe or tightly coupled design What interconnect topology, memory capacity, and software versions are validated?
Host CPU Grace, Vera, x86, or another Arm implementation How are CPU memory channels, NUMA domains, and accelerator affinity exposed?
Memory Capacity, speed, ECC, and population rules What capacity is standard, and what remains available after the initial build?
Storage Local NVMe, shared storage, boot media, and data tiers What throughput, endurance, RAID or replication, and replacement process are supported?
Interconnect NVLink, Ethernet, InfiniBand, DPUs, and switch topology Are optics, cables, switches, firmware, and management tools included in the validated design?
Form factor 1U, 2U, 4U, tray, or rack-scale arrangement What rack depth, rails, service clearance, and floor loading are required?
Thermals Air cooling, direct liquid cooling, or a hybrid What inlet temperature, coolant temperature, flow, redundancy, and leak response are required?
Power AC distribution, busbar, redundancy, and peak budget What are typical, sustained, and worst-case draw figures for the complete system?
Support Warranty, spare parts, software image, and upgrade path Who owns escalation across server, GPU, network, and facility layers?

Match the design to the workload

NVIDIA lists AI, high-performance computing, data science, large language models, edge computing, graphics and video, enterprise AI, and design or simulation among MGX use cases. These workloads have different bottlenecks. Large-model training may prioritize accelerator memory, GPU-to-GPU bandwidth, and cluster fabric. Data science may need a balanced CPU, memory, and storage configuration. Edge deployments may value compact dimensions, remote management, and a wider temperature range over maximum rack density.

Write down the workload’s batch size, model or dataset size, target throughput, latency objective, concurrency, checkpoint frequency, and growth horizon. Give those requirements to the builder instead of asking for a generic “AI server.” The resulting proposal should show why each accelerator, CPU, memory tier, network, and storage choice meets the requirement.

How do single-node and rack-scale MGX deployments differ?

Single-node deployment

A single node is usually the simpler starting point: one server, its local or attached storage, a management network, and the facility power and cooling needed for that chassis. You still need to verify rack rails, circuit capacity, airflow or coolant connections, operating-system and driver support, and a maintenance plan. A node that runs successfully in a lab may require different inlet temperatures, power circuits, or cable management in a production rack.

Rack-scale deployment

Rack-scale MGX treats servers and infrastructure as one system. NVIDIA’s current product description refers to a third-generation rack architecture that unifies compute and networking servers, cooling, power, connectors, and related infrastructure. In an October 2026 NVIDIA Blog post, NVIDIA described MGX 1.2 features including rack-scale blind-mate liquid cooling, interoperable rack-scale interconnect infrastructure, configurable I/O bays, fanless liquid-cooled compute trays, and standardized power and cooling interfaces.

NVIDIA says the architecture supports rack deployments up to 250 kW. That is a capability of the architecture, not a statement that your facility can accept a 250 kW rack or that every MGX system will consume that much. Site readiness depends on electrical service, distribution redundancy, cooling capacity, water treatment, floor loading, fire protection, network connectivity, and the utility’s operating limits.

Deployment checklist: from quote to production

  1. Define the workload and service target. Record model or application requirements, throughput, latency, users, availability, and expected growth. Identify whether you need one node, a small cluster, or rack-scale expansion.
  2. Request a complete configuration. Require exact part numbers for GPUs, CPUs, memory, storage, NICs or DPUs, switches, chassis, power supplies, cooling hardware, rails, cables, and management components. Ask which items are optional and which are mandatory for the validated design.
  3. Obtain the support matrix. Confirm BIOS, BMC, GPU firmware, network firmware, drivers, CUDA or other accelerator software, operating system, container runtime, and cluster-management versions. Record the supported upgrade path and rollback process.
  4. Validate the mechanical fit. Check rack units, depth, weight, rail compatibility, door openings, service clearances, cable paths, airflow direction, and floor loading. For liquid cooling, verify manifolds, quick-disconnects, leak sensors, coolant specifications, and service access.
  5. Model power and cooling. Review normal, sustained, and peak electrical draw; circuit and busway limits; breaker coordination; UPS or generator behavior; and cooling capacity at the planned inlet or coolant temperature. Include network switches, storage, pumps, and conversion losses, not only the GPU nameplate.
  6. Design the network and storage fabric. Approve a topology diagram showing data, storage, management, and any out-of-band networks. Confirm switch ports, optics, cable lengths, routing, DPU roles, addressing, and failure domains.
  7. Plan installation and acceptance. Define who installs rails, power, coolant, cabling, firmware, and software. Set acceptance tests for hardware discovery, accelerator health, link status, storage performance, thermal behavior, failover, and recovery after a power or network interruption.
  8. Document operations. Obtain spares lists, replacement procedures, monitoring points, maintenance windows, escalation contacts, security guidance, and a rack-level diagram. Store the approved firmware and software versions so later changes can be audited.

MGX, certified systems, and endorsed designs: what is the difference?

Label What it describes What it does not prove
MGX A modular reference architecture used by system builders That a specific vendor configuration, software stack, or upgrade is supported
NVIDIA-Certified System NVIDIA documentation says certification applies to a server or node That an entire multi-rack cluster or facility design has been certified
NVIDIA Reference Architecture How systems are assembled and operated as a cluster That every server carrying an MGX label follows that architecture
NVIDIA-endorsed partner design A qualifying partner cluster design reviewed by NVIDIA’s Design Review Board against applicable patterns That an unlisted configuration has the same review or endorsement

Ask the seller to identify the exact listing, configuration, scale range, and endorsement category that applies to your quotation. Do not infer certification or endorsement from an MGX association alone.

What do MGX’s headline numbers mean?

  • More than 100 combinations: NVIDIA’s current MGX overview describes over 100 modular design combinations. This is an architecture-level count, not a list of 100 ready-to-ship server SKUs.
  • More than 90 systems from over 25 partners: NVIDIA reported this figure in 2024 for systems released or in development. Availability, regional support, and final specifications must be checked with each system maker.
  • Up to three-quarters lower development cost and two-thirds faster development: NVIDIA’s 2023 specification announcement said MGX could cut system-development costs by up to three-quarters and reduce development time by two-thirds to six months. These are NVIDIA’s claims about development work, not guaranteed savings, delivery dates, or purchase prices for a buyer.
  • Up to 250 kW per rack: NVIDIA’s October 2026 description of MGX 1.2 presents this as an architectural rack-deployment capability. It is not a site-readiness calculation or a recommendation for every installation.

Common procurement mistakes and how to avoid them

Treating MGX as a product SKU

Fix this by requesting the OEM’s exact model number, bill of materials, validated software image, and warranty scope. If the quote only says “MGX server,” it is incomplete.

Assuming listed parts are universally interchangeable

Fix this by checking mechanical, electrical, thermal, firmware, and software compatibility together. A GPU, NIC, or CPU may be an MGX option but unavailable in the selected chassis or unsupported with the chosen release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Planning power from the accelerator label alone

Fix this by budgeting the full rack: host processors, memory, fans or pumps, storage, switches, DPUs, power-conversion losses, and startup or transient behavior. Have the facility team approve the resulting electrical design.

Ignoring service boundaries

Fix this by writing down who supports the server, accelerator, network fabric, liquid loop, and orchestration software. Require a single escalation path or a clearly documented handoff between suppliers.

Confusing certification with cluster validation

Fix this by identifying whether the evidence applies to one node, a reference architecture, or an endorsed cluster design. Request the exact configuration and scale range, not a marketing label.

Bottom line

MGX gives system builders a reusable way to combine current and future accelerators, CPUs, networking, storage, chassis, cooling, and power designs. Its flexibility is valuable precisely because it does not prescribe one universal server. For buyers, that flexibility shifts due diligence to the configuration level: verify the exact components, firmware and software stack, rack mechanics, power and cooling envelope, network topology, support ownership, and validated upgrade path before treating an MGX proposal as production-ready.
