Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →There is no universal winner between NVIDIA GPUs and Huawei Ascend accelerators. The right choice depends on your exact model, software stack, system scale, deployment location, and ability to validate performance. NVIDIA pairs GPUs with CUDA; Huawei positions Ascend NPUs around its CANN software stack. Because the available published results are not controlled, same-workload NVIDIA-versus-Ascend tests, claims that one is always faster or cheaper would be misleading.
What you are actually comparing
A chip comparison is only one layer of an AI infrastructure decision. An application normally passes through an accelerator, driver and runtime, compiler, kernel and operator libraries, an AI framework, the model implementation, and communication software for multiple devices. A model that runs well on one platform can require operator substitutions, precision changes, compiler work, or serving changes on another.

NVIDIA’s platform uses graphics-processing-unit (GPU) accelerators and the CUDA software environment. Huawei describes Ascend as a family of AI chips using neural-processing units (NPUs), with CANN as its software foundation. The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s November 2024 report presents CUDA and CANN as the respective proprietary frameworks for managing parallel processing, and identifies PyTorch and MindSpore as open-source frameworks associated with those ecosystems.

How the software stacks affect real projects
CUDA and the NVIDIA path
CUDA is the software environment surrounding NVIDIA accelerators. In a production project, the relevant question is not simply whether a framework has a CUDA backend. Check the CUDA, driver, framework, compiler, kernel-library and serving versions that your model actually uses. Custom CUDA kernels, fused operators, quantization libraries, distributed-training code and inference engines can all become dependencies that are not portable by changing the hardware underneath.
CANN and Ascend portability
CANN provides Huawei’s runtime, compiler and operator ecosystem for Ascend. Huawei’s September 2025 announcements said it planned to open compiler and virtual-instruction-set interfaces and open-source other CANN software by December 31, 2025, with future openness synchronized with product launches. That was a stated plan, not proof that every component or version would be available under identical terms.
In September 2026, Huawei described CANN as having moved to sustained, community-driven open-source development. Huawei reported more than 5,200 monthly active developers, 61% external participation, more than 40 models natively pretrained on Ascend and CANN, and support for more than 90 third-party open-source projects, including PyTorch, Triton, vLLM and veRL. These are Huawei-published figures and descriptions; they are not independent audits of ecosystem quality, support response or production success.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMERICS, in its July 2025 analysis, offered a more cautious snapshot. It described CANN as less mature and usable than CUDA at that time, cited developer concerns about crashes and version compatibility, and reported that DeepSeek had considered Ascend 910C inadequate for training. Those observations are dated and should not be applied automatically to every later release, device or workload. They do, however, identify the questions a pilot must answer: which operators are missing, how often do jobs fail, how difficult is diagnosis, and can the team reproduce a working environment after an upgrade?
Huawei’s system-level approach: cards, servers and SuperPoDs
Ascend is commonly presented as part of a larger system rather than as an isolated chip. Huawei’s September 2025 announcement described a UnifiedBus-based SuperPoD architecture that interconnects physical servers and pools resources. It listed the liquid-cooled Atlas 950 SuperPoD, air-cooled Atlas 850 and 860 SuperPoD servers, an Atlas 350 accelerator card and a TaiShan 950 general-purpose SuperPoD.

Huawei said the Atlas 850 is an air-cooled enterprise system with eight Ascend NPUs and that multiple units can scale into a 1,024-NPU cluster. It also said the Atlas 350, based on Ascend 950PR, can connect up to four cards through UnifiedBus ports. These are vendor product claims. Availability, shipping configuration, regional support and independently measured performance were not established, so request a configuration-specific bill of materials and acceptance criteria.
Huawei’s September 2026 keynote placed Ascend in a UnifiedBus-powered SuperPoD and SuperCluster portfolio. It reported Ascend 960DT availability in the first quarter of 2027 and Ascend 960PR readiness in the third quarter of 2027, with Ascend 970 and 980 projected for 2028 and 2029. Those are forward-looking statements as of that keynote, not independently verified shipping dates. Do not base a near-term deployment plan on a roadmap part without a contractual delivery commitment.

What the published performance evidence really says
CloudMatrix384 and Ascend 910C
A 2025 technical paper describes CloudMatrix384 as a production system containing 384 Ascend 910C NPUs and 192 Kunpeng CPUs connected through Huawei’s Unified Bus. The authors report a serving system called CloudMatrix-Infer and measurements for DeepSeek-R1. Their stated results include 6,688 tokens per second per NPU for prefill, 1,943 tokens per second per NPU for decode, and under 50 milliseconds time per output token. Under a 15-millisecond latency constraint, they report 538 tokens per second.
Those figures belong to the paper’s model, serving software, hardware arrangement and measurement conditions. They are not a general Ascend specification, a per-chip guarantee, or an NVIDIA comparison. The paper does not establish that the system is faster or less expensive than an equivalently configured NVIDIA deployment. You can read the authors’ paper at https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.12708.

A 16-device field study
A preprint dated July 10, 2026 describes a field study using a 16-device Ascend 910 system with CANN and vLLM-Ascend. It covers a W8A8 mixture-of-experts judge model and a multimodal medical vision-language workload. Its accessible abstract establishes the study’s scope, but it is not sufficient to summarize detailed findings or claim comparative performance against NVIDIA. Treat it as a reminder to test both language and multimodal workloads rather than as a winner announcement. The preprint is available at https://arxiv.org/abs/2607.08215.
How to benchmark NVIDIA and Ascend fairly
A credible evaluation controls every variable that can change throughput, latency, quality or cost. A vendor’s peak number is useful for understanding a design target, but it is not a procurement result for your application.
- Freeze the workload. Use the same model checkpoint or training code, tokenizer, dataset slice, evaluation metric and output-quality threshold. Record model version and any custom operators.
- Match numerical settings. Keep precision and quantization equivalent, such as FP16, BF16, FP8 or W8A8, and verify that accuracy or task quality remains within the same tolerance. Do not compare an aggressively quantized model on one platform with a higher-precision model on the other.
- Match serving conditions. Specify prompt and output lengths, batch size, request concurrency, prefill-to-decode mix, cache policy and scheduling. For training, record sequence length, global and micro-batch sizes, gradient accumulation, checkpoint frequency and optimizer settings.
- Use comparable hardware counts. Document accelerator count, host CPUs, memory, local storage, network adapters, fabric topology, interconnect settings and power limits. Report both per-device and full-system results.
- Measure the objective your users care about. Capture throughput, first-token latency, time per output token, tail latency and quality. A high aggregate token rate is not useful if the service misses its latency target or produces lower-quality answers.
- Include reliability and engineering work. Count failed runs, compiler or kernel workarounds, crashes, recovery time, upgrade effort and the time required to reproduce an environment. Record whether a job resumes after a device or network fault.
- Measure energy and total cost only on matched runs. Log whole-system power, cooling overhead where available, utilization, hardware lease or purchase cost, software support, staffing and migration effort. A device-only price is not a total-cost comparison.
- Repeat at production scale. Run enough duration and concurrency to expose memory fragmentation, thermal throttling, communication bottlenecks and long-tail failures. A short single-device demonstration cannot predict a multi-server deployment.
Your benchmark report should include the software release, driver and firmware versions, compiler flags, model commit, dataset, hardware topology, test duration and raw latency distribution. Preserve the environment so a result can be reproduced after an upgrade.
Can Ascend run the same AI models as NVIDIA?
Sometimes, but model-name compatibility alone is not an answer. Verify all of the following for the exact release you plan to deploy:
- The framework version and supported Ascend backend.
- Every model operator, fused kernel, custom extension and attention implementation.
- Required precision, quantization format, calibration tools and numerical behavior.
- Compiler and runtime compatibility, including driver, firmware and CANN versions.
- Distributed-training or serving support for the required device count and interconnect.
- Serving-engine support, such as the tested vLLM-Ascend path, batching behavior and continuous-batching limits.
- Checkpoint import, tokenizer behavior, serialization and monitoring integrations.
Porting may be straightforward for a model that stays within well-supported framework operators, but custom CUDA extensions and undocumented assumptions can make migration substantial. Build a small proof of concept before committing to a cluster purchase. Have the team train or serve a representative model, test failure recovery and document every compatibility workaround.

Training, fine-tuning and inference: different selection pressures
Large-scale training
Training stresses optimizer state, memory capacity, collective communication, checkpointing and job reliability. The relevant comparison is sustained samples or tokens per second at the target scale, not a single accelerator’s theoretical throughput. Confirm that the framework supports your parallelism strategy, that collectives scale across the planned topology and that a failed worker can be replaced without losing excessive work.
MERICS’s 2025 account that DeepSeek considered Ascend 910C inadequate for training is a historical, attributed observation rather than a verdict on every current Ascend system. Re-run your own training code with your required sequence lengths, precision and convergence target.
Fine-tuning
Fine-tuning often exposes portability issues earlier than full pretraining because teams use parameter-efficient methods, custom data pipelines and specialized kernels. Test the exact LoRA or other adaptation method, gradient checkpointing, optimizer, checkpoint format and evaluation scripts. Include the time to convert existing checkpoints and to validate that loss curves and final quality match your reference.
Inference
Inference decisions depend on latency objective, concurrency, context length, batching and model mix. Separate prefill from decode measurements, report tail latency and test memory behavior at the longest supported context. A system that produces impressive aggregate throughput at high concurrency may be unsuitable for an interactive service with a strict first-token or per-token target.
Cost, availability and geopolitical constraints
No current, matched pricing or total-cost study establishes which platform is cheaper for an equivalent workload in a particular country. Ask suppliers for quotes that include accelerator cards, complete servers, switches and cabling, storage, software support, installation, warranty, power and cooling requirements, and migration engineering.
Best Value
Availability and export rules can change quickly. The available evidence does not establish the current law, licensing position or procurement eligibility for your location, so verify official rules and obtain written confirmation from the supplier and your compliance team before ordering.
MERICS’s July 2025 report estimated that NVIDIA sold more than one million H20 chips in China in 2024 and Huawei sold 200,000 AI chips. Those are historical estimates for one geography and year, not current global sales and not directly comparable model-for-model shipment data.
Questions to put in a vendor evaluation
- Which exact accelerator, server and interconnect configuration is being quoted?
- What CANN, CUDA, driver, firmware and framework versions are supported for your model?
- Which operators and precisions are unsupported, emulated or slower than the reference path?
- What measured throughput and tail latency will the supplier guarantee, under which model, batch, sequence length and quality conditions?
- How are failed devices, compiler errors and software regressions diagnosed and recovered?
- What are the power, cooling, rack, networking and facility requirements at the planned scale?
- What is included in support, and where are replacement parts and engineering staff located?
- Can you run an acceptance test with your own model before the purchase becomes non-cancellable?
Bottom line for infrastructure teams
NVIDIA offers a CUDA-centered GPU platform; Huawei offers Ascend NPUs with CANN and a system strategy built around cards, servers and UnifiedBus-connected SuperPoDs. Huawei reports rapid growth in CANN’s open-source community and project coverage, while independent MERICS analysis from July 2025 documented maturity and compatibility concerns at that point. Both statements can be true because they describe different dates and perspectives.
The CloudMatrix384 paper demonstrates that a large Ascend system can deliver substantial, published inference throughput, but it does not provide a controlled NVIDIA comparison. Select a platform only after a matched pilot measures your model’s quality, throughput, latency, reliability, energy and full deployment cost. Compare complete systems at the scale you will operate, not isolated chip labels or roadmap claims.
