Use nvidia-smi for a quick local check of an NVIDIA GPU and whether the driver can see it. Choose NVIDIA Data Center GPU Manager (DCGM) when you need ongoing telemetry, health monitoring, diagnostics, GPU-group management, or integration with other systems. For Prometheus, DCGM Exporter exposes selected DCGM metrics at a scrape endpoint. These tools serve different operational layers, so using both is often appropriate.
What is the difference between DCGM and nvidia-smi?
nvidia-smi is a driver-provided command-line utility for inspecting NVIDIA GPUs from a shell. It is a practical first stop for a status check or to confirm that the driver discovers a device. Its available output and options depend on the GPU and driver, so consult the help and reference for the installed version when you need a specific field or flag. NVIDIA also uses nvidia-smi as an initial discovery check in its DCGM Exporter troubleshooting guidance.

DCGM is a broader host-level framework for data-center GPU monitoring and management. It can collect and retain telemetry, monitor health, run diagnostics, manage configuration and GPU groups, and provide programmatic interfaces. Its host engine can run as a standalone process or be embedded in another agent. The dcgmi command-line interface communicates with that engine; NVIDIA says it is not intended as a scripting interface, so automation should use supported APIs or a suitable integration instead. When should you use nvidia-smi?
Start with nvidia-smi when you are at a machine and need a fast, direct answer about GPU visibility or current device status. It is also a useful first troubleshooting step: if the driver does not discover the GPU, investigating an exporter or higher-level monitoring setup is premature.

Do not treat it as a substitute for DCGM’s broader operational framework. A command-line snapshot is not the same as retained telemetry, health evaluation, active diagnostics, or shared collection for other software. Nor should you assume every GPU exposes the same fields or supports every option; check the installed utility’s help when the exact output matters.
When is DCGM the better choice?
Continuous telemetry and administration
Use DCGM when GPU monitoring needs to continue beyond an operator’s shell session, or when software needs shared access to collected fields, GPU groups, configuration functions, or process statistics. NVIDIA describes DCGM as providing continuous GPU telemetry at “very low performance overheads”; that is NVIDIA’s qualitative characterization, not a numeric overhead guarantee.

Passive health monitoring
DCGM health monitoring evaluates retained field samples and can flag known subsystem conditions while a workload runs, without launching a dedicated test. It answers whether recent telemetry shows conditions of concern; it does not establish that a GPU can successfully execute a workload. NVIDIA distinguishes health monitoring from active diagnostic suites in its health monitoring documentation.

Use DCGM diagnostics when you need a dedicated test to investigate readiness or a suspected failure. Passive health monitoring and active diagnostics answer different questions: one interprets collected evidence, while the other runs tests. Do not present a clean passive health result as proof of workload readiness.

How do you monitor NVIDIA GPUs with Prometheus?
DCGM Exporter exposes selected DCGM telemetry through an endpoint that Prometheus can scrape. NVIDIA documents package-managed service, container, and Kubernetes DaemonSet deployment options in its exporter installation guide. Prometheus must be able to reach the endpoint. For configuration, use NVIDIA’s Prometheus setup guide.
Match Prometheus’s scrape interval to the effective DCGM field-watch cadence. If Prometheus scrapes faster than DCGM refreshes a watched field, successive scrapes can return the same cached sample; a higher scrape frequency does not necessarily mean fresher telemetry.

What should you check before deploying DCGM?
DCGM support depends on the GPU generation and capabilities, operating system, driver, CUDA user-mode driver, and deployment environment. Check NVIDIA’s current getting-started requirements and applicable support information for the exact combination before rolling it out. There is no single compatibility statement that safely covers every host.

For a container deployment, NVIDIA Container Toolkit is required; Prometheus needs network access to the exporter endpoint. NVIDIA lists exporter-specific prerequisites in its installation documentation.
Can DCGM and nvidia-smi be used together?
Yes. They are not interchangeable names for the same tool. An operator can use nvidia-smi for an immediate local check, DCGM for ongoing host telemetry and health or diagnostic functions, and DCGM Exporter to make selected DCGM fields available to Prometheus. Choose the layer that matches the task rather than installing DCGM solely to run nvidia-smi.
