Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most GeForce owners choosing today, NVIDIA App is the better default. It is NVIDIA’s newer unified application, officially released on November 12, 2024, and it combines many of the main GeForce Experience (GFE) functions with newer driver, graphics, monitoring, capture, and RTX controls. Keep GFE only long enough to verify a legacy workflow or GPU-specific feature that you depend on. NVIDIA is directing remaining GFE users to upgrade and says critical GFE web servers will be switched off “in the near future,” although its guidance does not give a shutdown date.
NVIDIA App vs GeForce Experience: the short answer
NVIDIA App is the replacement path, not a separate performance mode for games. Both applications provide access to Game Ready Drivers, game optimization, and an in-game overlay for recording and screenshots. The App adds a broader control center with driver rollback, display and video controls, GPU tuning, monitoring, statistics, and newer RTX features. Whether a particular control appears depends on the GPU, driver, game, operating-system setup, and installed App version.

GeForce Experience remains relevant mainly as a legacy interface. NVIDIA’s current upgrade guidance says some installed GFE versions cannot update automatically, so affected users must download NVIDIA App manually or install it through a Game Ready Driver. NVIDIA also warns that critical GFE web servers will be turned off in the near future. That is a planned service change, not a published shutdown date, and it does not establish that every existing GFE installation has already stopped working.

Features shared by both apps
Game Ready Driver access
Both products were built around delivering NVIDIA graphics drivers. In NVIDIA App, open the Drivers section to see the release information for your installed driver and available updates. The App’s release notes also document rollback support, allowing you to return to an earlier driver when a new release causes a compatibility problem. The exact rollback choices and retention can change with the App build and driver package.

GFE’s historical 3.26 notes list Game Ready Drivers alongside ShadowPlay and game settings. Those notes establish what that release supported; they are not proof that 3.26 was the final or currently supported GFE build.
Per-game optimization
Both applications can identify supported games and present recommended settings. NVIDIA calls the App’s recommendation system Optimal Playable Settings. The launch announcement said recommendations covered more than 1,200 titles at that time, so treat that number as a November 2024 snapshot rather than a current catalog total.
Optimization is a recommendation, not a guarantee of the highest frame rate or image quality. The available choices depend on the game profile, installed driver, GPU, display, and NVIDIA’s profile data. If you have manually tuned a game, compare the proposed changes before applying them.

The in-game overlay is the common path to screenshots and video capture. NVIDIA App reorganizes these tools into capture, gallery, and statistics areas. GFE supplied the older ShadowPlay workflow. Overlay behavior can vary by release: GFE 3.26 notes, for example, list fixes involving game minimization, overlay state, and Reflex Analyzer display.
NVIDIA’s current product information lists manual ShadowPlay recording up to 8K HDR at 30 frames per second or 4K HDR at 120 frames per second. Those are capture ceilings for supported hardware and settings, not evidence that NVIDIA App renders games faster than GFE. Codec, resolution, HDR mode, storage speed, game, and GPU support all affect what you can select.

What NVIDIA App adds or expands
A single home for NVIDIA controls
The App’s Home area combines access to installed NVIDIA applications and related content. Its Graphics area brings together Optimal Playable Settings and selected options that previously required separate NVIDIA interfaces. The System area covers display and video controls and GPU tuning. NVIDIA did not claim that every NVIDIA Control Panel setting had moved into the App at launch, so expect to open Control Panel for options that are still absent.
Driver details and rollback
App release highlights document a Drivers page with release information and rollback. This is useful when a newly installed driver conflicts with a game, display, or peripheral. Rollback availability is version-dependent; check the controls in the installed build rather than assuming every previous driver remains available.
Monitoring and tuning
Later App releases documented GPU monitoring, one-click automatic tuning, and a 1% low-FPS statistic in the overlay. A 1% low reports the slower end of observed frame times, which can reveal stutter that an average FPS number hides. Automatic tuning changes GPU operating parameters on supported hardware; review temperatures, stability, and the option’s requirements before enabling it. NVIDIA’s release highlights are the authority for which GPU and driver combinations expose these controls.
Display, video, and G-SYNC controls
Release highlights also list G-SYNC and display settings, plus video controls. Their presence does not mean every monitor feature or every Control Panel page has been migrated. If a setting is missing, use the traditional NVIDIA Control Panel and confirm that the display is connected to the NVIDIA GPU and running a compatible driver.
RTX-dependent capabilities
Some of the App’s most visible features are limited by GPU generation. NVIDIA identifies Smooth Motion for RTX 50- and RTX 40-series GPUs. It identifies AV1 recording support for RTX 40-series owners. Other RTX functions can also require a particular game, driver, or App version. Do not treat an App installation as proof that your GeForce card supports every RTX control; check the requirement shown for the specific feature.

NVIDIA’s installation and interface claims
In its November 12, 2024 launch announcement, NVIDIA said the App “installs in half the time” compared with GeForce Experience and has a user interface that is “50% more responsive.” These are NVIDIA’s own comparative claims. The announcement does not provide the test system, sample size, timing method, build numbers, or independent reproduction, so they should not be read as universal measurements for every PC.
Does NVIDIA App increase in-game FPS?
No controlled App-versus-GFE gaming benchmark is established by the available evidence. NVIDIA describes recording as having minimal impact on performance and publishes capture ceilings, but that does not demonstrate higher game FPS, lower CPU or RAM use, faster startup, or less background activity than GFE.
Your frame rate can change after installing either app because of a new graphics driver, altered game settings, an enabled overlay, recording, tuning, or an RTX feature—not because the application has a proven rendering advantage. If you need a meaningful comparison, test the same driver, game build, resolution, graphics settings, background processes, and capture state, and record identical runs. The vendor figures above should remain labeled as product claims rather than independent benchmark results.
Login, privacy, and rewards
NVIDIA states that App login is optional for ordinary use. You need an account when redeeming bundles or rewards. This lets users install drivers, adjust supported graphics options, and use core local features without treating sign-in as a prerequisite. A reward redemption flow can therefore require credentials even when the rest of the application does not.

Because online services support driver information, game profiles, and rewards, availability can change independently of the local interface. NVIDIA’s warning about future GFE web-server changes is the practical reason to move to the App rather than depend on an older online workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to move from GeForce Experience to NVIDIA App
- Check what you rely on. Write down any GFE workflow you use, such as a particular overlay shortcut, recording format, game profile, or Reflex Analyzer view. Confirm that the GPU and game meet the App feature’s stated requirements.
- Use NVIDIA’s upgrade path. If your GFE build cannot update automatically, download NVIDIA App manually or install it through a Game Ready Driver, as NVIDIA’s upgrade guidance recommends.
- Open the App’s sections. Review Drivers for release details and updates, Graphics for game recommendations and available settings, System for display/video/GPU controls, and the overlay for capture and statistics.
- Verify your games. Confirm that each title appears, inspect proposed Optimal Playable Settings, and recheck any manually configured graphics options before applying recommendations.
- Test capture and overlay. Start a short recording, open the gallery, and confirm your screenshot and video destinations. Check HDR, resolution, frame rate, and codec options against your GPU’s support.
- Recheck specialized features. If you use Smooth Motion, AV1, G-SYNC, GPU tuning, or 1% low-FPS statistics, verify that the control is present and that the installed driver and App version meet its requirements.
- Keep Control Panel available. Some NVIDIA Control Panel settings remained outside the App at launch. Use Control Panel when a display, shader, or application option is not exposed in the new interface.
When keeping GeForce Experience temporarily makes sense
- You depend on a legacy overlay behavior or workflow that you have not yet reproduced in NVIDIA App.
- Your system uses a GPU, driver, or game combination whose App support is unclear.
- You need to finish a project using a known GFE capture configuration before changing software.
This is a temporary compatibility decision, not a recommendation to build a long-term setup around GFE. NVIDIA’s stated transition plan means online-dependent functions may become less reliable, and some GFE versions cannot perform an automatic upgrade.
Common problems and practical fixes
A feature is missing
Check the App version, graphics driver, GPU generation, and game. RTX-only features will not appear on unsupported GeForce hardware, and release highlights can add or change controls over time. Use NVIDIA’s current release highlights for the installed build before treating a missing control as an installation fault.
Overlay does not appear in a game
Confirm the overlay is enabled in the App, launch the game after the App is running, and test a supported capture shortcut. Overlay fixes have varied by GFE release, so behavior can also depend on the game’s display mode and the current driver. If the game minimizes or the overlay state changes unexpectedly, update to a current supported driver/App build and retest.
Recording options are lower than expected
8K HDR/30 and 4K HDR/120 are maximum modes listed by NVIDIA, not universal defaults. Your GPU generation, HDR path, game output, codec support, storage throughput, and available disk space can reduce the choices. RTX 40-series support is specifically associated with AV1 recording; other GPUs may show different codec options.
Automatic GFE update does not work
NVIDIA says some remaining GFE versions cannot update automatically. Download NVIDIA App manually or install it through a Game Ready Driver, then open the App and confirm the driver and feature sections are available. NVIDIA has not published a date for switching off critical GFE web servers, so do not interpret the warning as a confirmed completed shutdown.
Which one should you use?
| Your situation | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are installing an NVIDIA companion app now. | NVIDIA App | It is the current unified product and the supported migration direction. |
| You want rollback, monitoring, tuning, newer statistics, or expanded RTX controls. | NVIDIA App | These capabilities are documented in App release highlights, subject to hardware and version requirements. |
| You only need basic driver delivery, optimization, and capture while checking compatibility. | NVIDIA App, with a short GFE overlap if necessary | The core functions exist in both, but NVIDIA is moving online support toward the App. |
| A specific legacy GFE workflow is business-critical and unverified in the App. | GFE temporarily | Validate the replacement first, then migrate before future server changes affect the old workflow. |
For a normal GeForce gaming PC, install NVIDIA App, confirm the features you actually use, and keep NVIDIA Control Panel available for settings that have not migrated. Choose GFE only as a compatibility bridge while you verify a legacy setup; the available evidence does not show a frame-rate advantage for either application.
