Umpire Nitin Menon gave Sri Lanka batter Nuwanidu Fernando out caught behind against Bangladesh in the Asian Games men’s third-place playoff on 3 October 2026. Reports said replays appeared to show a gap between bat and ball, and that DRS was unavailable; the scorecard records the dismissal as caught by Litton Das off Al Islam.
Why was Nuwanidu Fernando given out?
Fernando tried to play a delivery through the covers and missed. Bangladesh appealed, and Menon gave him out, according to Hindustan Times and Newswire. Both reports characterize replay images as showing apparent separation between bat and ball. That is their description of the images, not an independent technical review establishing what happened.

The BBC scorecard records Fernando as caught by Litton Das off Al Islam, with Sri Lanka at 18 for three. That notation states how the dismissal was entered in the scorecard; it does not settle whether the umpire’s call was correct.
Could Fernando ask for a review?
Hindustan Times and Newswire reported that DRS was not available for the match. On those accounts, Fernando had no review route to challenge the call. The reports do not cite a competition rule document establishing review availability, so this is best understood as their reporting on the match rather than a separately verified rule.

What was the match result?
The Asian Games men’s T20I third-place playoff was played at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on 3 October 2026, according to the ICC match page. Sri Lanka made 165 for nine in 20 overs; Bangladesh were all out for 102 in 17.3 overs, giving Sri Lanka a 63-run win, per the BBC scorecard. Fernando made one from two balls. Hindustan Times reports that Tharindu Ratnayake scored 65 from 32 balls and captain Sahan Arachchige made 33.
What does the “nightmare from the 90s” comparison mean?
That phrase is Hindustan Times’ rhetorical framing of the decision. Its report does not identify a particular 1990s match or decision, and the cited match coverage does not establish a historical trend in umpiring errors. It should not be read as evidence that this call belongs to a documented series of comparable decisions.
