Most of the money is earmarked for Hermes 2, a demonstration plant in Oak Ridge designed to send up to 50 megawatts to the Tennessee Valley Authority grid for electricity demand associated with Google data centers.
How the funding is split
Bloomberg News reported the financing on October 14, 2026. The package covers the Tennessee demonstration program rather than representing a single private-equity round.

| Source | Amount | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Private investors | $368 million | Samsung C&T contributed $70 million. Google Ventures and DCVC were also identified among the backers. |
| U.S. Department of Energy financing | $275 million | Government financing included in the package reported for the Tennessee program. |
| Total | $643 million | Combined private and government funding reported on October 14, 2026. |
Most of the package supports Hermes 2 in Oak Ridge. Kairos also plans to use part of it to expand manufacturing capacity at a site in New Mexico, so the entire amount should not be treated as construction spending at the Tennessee site.

What Hermes 2 is
Hermes 2 is Kairos Power’s planned demonstration plant at the former East Tennessee Technology Park in Oak Ridge. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission describes the application as two low-power test reactors supporting Kairos’s fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology, known as KP-FHR.

Kairos describes Hermes 2 as its first commercial-scale reactor. That label refers to the intended scale and commercial demonstration role; it does not mean the plant is an operating commercial nuclear station. The NRC authorization covers construction, and the reactors are intended to demonstrate the technology and its supporting systems.
How the reactor concept differs
KP-FHR uses fluoride salt as the coolant in a high-temperature reactor design. The NRC’s classification emphasizes that Hermes 2 is a low-power test facility, while Kairos’s project description emphasizes a step toward commercial deployment. Both descriptions apply to different aspects of the same project: the plant is a demonstration of a design intended for larger commercial use.

Regulatory and construction status
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| November 21, 2024 | The NRC issued construction permits for Hermes 2. |
| May 2025 | Kairos said nuclear construction began on the earlier Hermes demonstration reactor. |
| April 2026 | Kairos reported groundbreaking for Hermes 2. |
A construction permit is permission to build under the NRC’s licensing process; it is not an operating license and does not show that the plant is generating electricity. Hermes 2 therefore remains a project under construction and commissioning, not a completed source of grid power.

Kairos has discussed an operating expectation around 2030. That is a project target, not a guaranteed date, and the plant’s eventual output depends on completing construction, testing and subsequent regulatory steps.

Will it power Google data centers?
The planned customer arrangement is indirect. Kairos says Hermes 2 can provide up to 50 megawatts to the TVA grid under a power-purchase agreement associated with Google data-center demand in Tennessee and Alabama. Electricity would enter the TVA system; the announcement does not describe a private wire carrying reactor output directly to a specific data center.
Hermes 2 is the first delivery under Kairos and Google’s master development agreement. That broader agreement targets 500 megawatts of new advanced-nuclear capacity by 2035. The 500-megawatt figure is a future portfolio goal, not capacity already operating, and Hermes 2’s planned contribution is up to 50 megawatts.

How the newer financing relates to earlier federal support
Kairos previously said the Hermes demonstration project had support of up to $303 million from the Department of Energy through its Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program in 2024. That announcement also described Kairos’s own investment and a commitment to create at least 55 full-time jobs in East Tennessee.

They were announced at different times and describe different support packages; the available announcements do not establish that every dollar in one figure is separate from every dollar in the other.
What the announcement means for Kairos
- A financed demonstration: The company has assembled substantial private and federal backing for a first-of-a-kind reactor project.
- A manufacturing link: Some funding is directed to New Mexico production expansion, reflecting Kairos’s effort to build a supply base alongside the Oak Ridge plant.
- A customer signal: The TVA power-purchase agreement gives the project an identified route to market if Hermes 2 reaches operation.
- A regulatory milestone, not a finished plant: Construction permits and groundbreaking mark progress, but they do not establish operating performance or commercial availability.
Key points to watch next
Readers tracking the project should distinguish four milestones: physical construction, completion of the NRC licensing process, fuel and systems testing, and actual delivery of electricity to the TVA grid. The funding announcement addresses financing; it does not by itself confirm a final operating date, generated power or completion of the 500-megawatt program.
For now, Hermes 2 is best understood as an Oak Ridge demonstration of Kairos’s fluoride-salt-cooled reactor technology, backed by a mixed private-government funding package and tied to a planned grid-supply agreement serving regional data-center demand.
