There is no universal winner. Natural gas can provide dispatchable electricity on a relatively short schedule where fuel, turbines and grid interconnection are available. Renewables usually offer the lowest new-generation cost and are expected to supply much of data-center demand growth, but their hourly output must be balanced with storage, transmission, flexible demand and other firm resources. Existing nuclear plants provide low-emissions, firm power where they are connected; new nuclear and small modular reactor projects may become more important after 2030, but planned capacity is not the same as operating capacity.
The right choice is therefore a portfolio decision. Compare the date power is needed, hourly reliability, delivered 24/7 cost, emissions, local grid conditions, land and water constraints, fuel and equipment availability, and the credibility of each project’s schedule.

Why data-center electricity demand is difficult to plan
Data centers are adding large, concentrated loads while forecasts continue to change. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that data centers consumed about 415 TWh, or 1.5% of global electricity, in 2024. Its 2025 base case projected roughly 945 TWh in 2030. A later IEA summary published in 2026 put the central estimate at about 485 TWh in 2025 and 950 TWh in 2030. Those figures are different editions of a forecast, not a contradiction: assumptions about artificial-intelligence adoption, server efficiency, construction and grid availability are being revised.
In the United States, the Department of Energy (DOE) cites an EPRI estimate that data centers could account for up to 9% of annual electricity generation by 2030, compared with 4% of total load in 2023. “Up to” is important: it is an estimate under specified assumptions, not a guaranteed national outcome.

AI workloads also create operational challenges. A facility may have a high continuous load and rapid changes in power demand as computing jobs start, stop or move between servers. A supply plan that looks adequate on an annual energy basis can still fail during a high-load hour, a transmission outage or a period of low wind and solar output.
What the current electricity mix shows
The most useful starting point is the physical electricity serving the facility, including local grid generation and on-site generation. A corporate contract for renewable certificates or a power-purchase agreement does not automatically change the electrons physically delivered to the building.
| Region and measure | Coal | Renewables | Natural gas | Nuclear |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Global data-center electricity generation, 2024 (IEA 2025 estimate) | About 30% | About 27% | About 26% | About 15% |
| United States data-center electricity generation (IEA 2025 estimate) | About 15% | 24% | More than 40% | About 20% |
These shares describe the electricity physically consumed, not a universal procurement standard. They vary with the surrounding grid, the data center’s location, behind-the-meter generation and the accounting boundary used by the source.

Natural gas: fast, dispatchable capacity with fuel and equipment exposure
Gas turbines or reciprocating engines can be dispatched when servers need power, making them useful for continuous loads, peaks and backup. A gas plant can also complement wind and solar when renewable output falls. That flexibility is the principal reason gas remains important while new transmission, storage and low-emissions firm projects are built.
The near-term advantage is not unlimited. The IEA’s 2025 outlook expects natural gas and coal together to meet more than 40% of additional global data-center electricity demand through 2030. Its 2026 summary warns that reliable on-site gas supply for critical and variable loads may require installed generation capacity 30% to 70% above the load served. Oversizing provides redundancy and headroom, but it raises capital, fuel and interconnection requirements.
Equipment and infrastructure can also control the schedule. The IEA reports multi-year delivery lead times for new gas turbines. A site that has land but no confirmed turbine slot, pipeline capacity or emissions permit cannot treat gas as an immediately available solution. Fuel-price exposure, methane supply-chain concerns and combustion emissions should be evaluated alongside reliability.

Renewables: low generation cost, with integration work included in the real decision
Wind, solar and hydropower can add large amounts of energy without fuel purchases. The IEA reports the following global weighted-average levelized costs of electricity (LCOE) for new generation in 2024:
| Technology | 2024 global weighted-average LCOE | What the figure does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Onshore wind | USD 0.034 per kWh | It is not a guaranteed site tariff or a 24/7 delivered price. |
| Solar photovoltaic | USD 0.043 per kWh | It does not include every firming, transmission or interconnection cost. |
| Hydropower | USD 0.057 per kWh | Site availability, permitting and water conditions differ materially. |
LCOE compares the cost of generating energy over a project’s life. A data center needs electricity in every critical hour, so its procurement analysis may also require overbuilding renewable capacity, adding batteries or other storage, purchasing firm grid power, retaining backup generation and paying for transmission and interconnection. A low plant-level LCOE therefore does not by itself prove that a renewable portfolio is the cheapest way to deliver firm service at a particular site.
Renewables can still do most of the growth work. The IEA’s base case says they meet nearly half of additional global data-center demand through 2030, and renewable generation serving data centers grows by more than 450 TWh through 2035. DOE identifies solar, land-based wind, storage, efficiency, grid expansion and demand resources as complementary tools.
Nuclear: firm, low-emissions electricity where the asset exists or can actually be built
Existing nuclear reactors can provide steady generation without direct combustion emissions and can reduce a data center’s dependence on gas or coal in the surrounding grid. Their value is greatest where a reactor is already connected, has a reliable operating record and can offer a credible long-term supply arrangement.
New nuclear and small modular reactors are different from existing plants. The IEA expects new nuclear, including the first SMRs, to become more important around and after 2030. DOE also lists nuclear as a potential source of clean firm power. Those statements describe an outlook and a technology option; they do not establish that a particular project is licensed, financed, connected or operating. A procurement plan must identify the project’s regulatory status, construction schedule, fuel arrangements, cooling requirements, transmission route and contingency if the date slips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNuclear’s firm output can reduce the amount of storage or backup needed for variable renewable supply. Conversely, a site that needs power before a new reactor could be completed cannot count prospective nuclear as near-term capacity.

What the outlook says about the next decade
The IEA’s 2025 analysis projects that renewable generation, gas and nuclear all grow as data-center demand rises. Renewable generation serving data centers increases by more than 450 TWh through 2035. Natural gas adds about 175 TWh, and nuclear contributes about the same amount of additional generation in that outlook. These are scenario results, not promises about individual plants or markets.
In the same supply analysis, emissions from electricity generation for data centers peak at about 320 million tonnes of CO2 in 2030 and decline to around 300 million tonnes in 2035. The result depends on the assumed expansion of renewables, nuclear and other low-carbon resources, as well as efficiency and grid conditions. It should not be interpreted as a lifecycle comparison for every technology.
A practical comparison for a data-center project
| Decision axis | Natural gas | Renewables | Nuclear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Availability on a short schedule | Possible where turbines, pipeline capacity, permits and interconnection are secured; turbine deliveries can take years. | Projects can be staged, but transmission and interconnection may dominate the schedule. | Existing plants may be available; new projects are long-horizon and schedule-sensitive. |
| Hourly output | Dispatchable, subject to fuel, equipment and emissions constraints. | Variable by weather and time of day; firming, storage, grid supply or flexible load is required. | Generally firm output from an operating plant; project-specific operating and outage plans matter. |
| Generation cost evidence | No single figure in the cited material; fuel, utilization and financing are site-specific. | 2024 global average LCOE: wind USD 0.034/kWh, solar USD 0.043/kWh, hydropower USD 0.057/kWh. | No comparable figure is established in the cited material. |
| Emissions | Combustion produces CO2; methane and upstream boundaries must be specified. | No combustion emissions during generation; lifecycle accounting still requires consistent boundaries. | Low operational emissions; compare lifecycle boundaries consistently. |
| Main delivery risks | Pipeline capacity, fuel price, turbine queues, permitting and the need to oversize capacity for critical variable loads. | Weather variability, storage duration, transmission, curtailment, land and interconnection queues. | Licensing, financing, construction, cooling, fuel and project completion risk. |
Why transmission and interconnection can decide the answer
A generation technology cannot serve a campus until the electricity can reach it. The IEA reports that transmission construction in advanced economies can take four to eight years. It also reports that transformer and cable wait times have doubled in three years. Those constraints can make an apparently inexpensive remote wind or solar project less useful than a nearer, higher-cost resource that can connect on time.
Evaluate the complete path from generator to server load:
- Available substation capacity and the utility’s interconnection study;
- Required transmission upgrades, transformer sizes and delivery dates;
- Congestion, curtailment and the grid’s ability to import power during local renewable shortfalls;
- Gas pipeline pressure and firm transportation rights if on-site generation is planned;
- Water, land, noise and air-permit limits for generation and cooling;
- Backup arrangements during planned outages, extreme weather and grid disturbances.
For a large campus, a “renewable” contract without deliverable transmission and a “gas” plan without a turbine slot are both incomplete schedules.
How to compare delivered 24/7 cost
Start with hourly load data rather than annual consumption. Separate the steady base load from peaks caused by AI training, inference bursts, cooling and expansion phases. Then model each candidate portfolio against the same reliability standard.

- Define the service. Specify the required uptime, maximum interruption tolerance, power quality, ramp rate and expansion date.
- Build an hourly load profile. Include current servers, cooling, networking, storage and the expected commissioning sequence for new halls.
- Map the local grid. Record the physical generation mix, import limits, outage history, congestion and interconnection milestones.
- Price all delivered components. Include generation, fuel, transmission, distribution, interconnection, storage, backup, operations, financing, taxes and site-specific tariffs.
- Test weather and outage cases. Model low-wind and low-solar periods, heat waves, cold snaps, fuel interruptions, transmission outages, reactor outages and battery depletion.
- Value flexibility. Examine server scheduling, workload shifting, cooling optimization, batteries, demand response and grid services. DOE and the IEA both identify efficiency and demand-side resources as part of the solution.
- Set emissions boundaries. Compare operational or lifecycle emissions consistently and state which boundary is being used.
- Audit schedule confidence. Treat a signed interconnection agreement, equipment reservation and permit as different milestones; do not count a proposal as available capacity.
This process prevents a low LCOE number from being mistaken for the price of uninterrupted electricity and prevents a firm-power claim from ignoring fuel, equipment or construction dependencies.

Existing-grid site with a short commissioning date
Use the available grid as the initial supply, secure firm capacity and add contracted renewables where transmission and settlement rules support them. Storage, efficiency and limited on-site generation can address peaks and disturbances. A new nuclear project is unlikely to solve an immediate load date unless an operating plant or an unusually advanced project is already connected.
Gas-constrained region with strong wind or solar resources
Prioritize transmission, storage and a firming plan before signing a large variable-energy contract. Model several days of poor renewable output, not only average annual production. Flexible computing workloads and staged server commissioning can reduce the amount of peaking capacity required.
Region with an operating nuclear fleet
Assess whether existing reactors can provide a credible long-term supply arrangement while preserving reliability for other customers. Pair firm nuclear output with additional renewables and efficiency rather than assuming one resource must serve every hour alone.
Long-horizon campus with clean-firm requirements
Keep prospective nuclear, SMRs, geothermal or other firm low-emissions resources in the option set, but use explicit development gates: site control, licensing, financing, equipment, fuel, construction, testing and grid connection. Maintain an interim supply plan in case any gate slips.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a national average as a site answer
Global and U.S. percentages are context, not a feasibility study. Replace them with the local utility mix, hourly imports, on-site generation and contracted delivery points.
Best Value
Equating annual renewable matching with hourly reliability
Annual energy matching can leave a facility exposed during dark, calm or congested periods. Add hourly accounting, storage-duration tests and firm backup.
Treating a planned reactor as operating power
Label prospective nuclear as prospective until licensing, financing, construction and grid connection are demonstrated. Keep a fallback portfolio for schedule slippage.
Ignoring oversizing for variable critical loads
The IEA’s 2026 summary indicates that reliable on-site gas supply may require 30%–70% more installed capacity than the critical load. Similar headroom questions apply to storage, transformers and backup systems; size each from an explicit outage and ramping analysis.
Comparing LCOE with a retail bill
The IEA renewable figures are generation LCOEs for 2024. They do not include every cost of firming, transmission, interconnection, storage, backup or site tariffs. Compare full delivered portfolios on the same reliability basis.
Bottom line for operators and policymakers
Natural gas is a practical bridge and balancing resource where infrastructure and equipment can be secured, but it carries fuel, combustion and supply-chain constraints. Renewables are likely to provide the largest share of incremental energy and have the strongest new-generation cost evidence, but they need transmission, storage, flexible demand and firming to serve a critical hourly load. Existing nuclear can supply low-emissions firm electricity where it is available; new nuclear and SMRs are strategic longer-term options rather than guaranteed near-term capacity.
For most data-center developments, the defensible answer is a diversified portfolio designed around the local grid and the actual commissioning schedule: firm capacity for critical hours, renewable energy for new supply and emissions reduction, storage and efficiency for flexibility, and a clearly gated plan for any future nuclear or other clean-firm project.
