The nuclear medicine equipment market is set for sustained expansion through 2035, led by theranostics, hybrid PET/CT and SPECT/CT, wider radiopharmaceutical access, and software that turns scans into quantitative treatment decisions. Forecasts are not directly interchangeable because analysts define “nuclear medicine” and “equipment” differently.
How big is the nuclear medicine equipment market in 2035?
Published estimates show strong growth, but they cover different market boundaries. Future Market Insights’ 2025 forecast measures a narrower equipment market, while a 2026 projection cited by GE HealthCare covers a broader nuclear-medicine opportunity.

| Source and date | Market definition in the cited estimate | Starting value | Forecast | Implied growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Future Market Insights, 2025 | Nuclear-medicine equipment | USD 2.6 billion in 2025 | USD 3.9 billion in 2035 | 4.1% CAGR |
| GE HealthCare, 2026 | Broader nuclear-medicine projection | Approximately USD 7.8 billion in 2024 | More than USD 30.7 billion in 2034 | Scope differs from the FMI estimate |
| International Atomic Energy Agency publication, accessed 2026 | SPECT/SPECT-CT market | USD 1.41 billion in 2018 | Approximately USD 1.934 billion in 2025 | About 4.64% CAGR |
The figures should therefore be used as directional evidence of expansion, not combined into one total. Equipment-only estimates can exclude radiopharmaceuticals, software, services, or other parts of the clinical ecosystem that a broader forecast includes.
What is driving nuclear medicine equipment market growth?
Theranostics connects diagnosis with treatment
Theranostics uses a molecular target first to identify disease and then to deliver a therapeutic radionuclide to the same or a related target. This model requires more than a scanner. Providers need quantitative imaging, dosimetry, radiopharmaceutical supply, treatment-planning software, radiation-safety processes, and coordination among nuclear medicine, oncology, physics, pharmacy, and referring teams.

Hybrid imaging is becoming the operating standard
SPECT/CT and PET/CT combine functional or molecular information with anatomical localization. The combination supports staging, prognosis, treatment planning, response monitoring, and more precise lesion targeting than either information stream alone. The IAEA describes hybrid imaging as a way to tailor clinical interventions to an individual patient’s needs under personalized-medicine principles.

Quantification and AI make scans more actionable
Modern platforms increasingly compete on lesion segmentation, kinetic modeling, automated reconstruction, dosimetry, and longitudinal response assessment—not only on detector hardware. These tools can help standardize interpretation across time and sites, but their value depends on validated algorithms, interoperable data, trained staff, and appropriate clinical oversight.
Radiopharmaceutical access and production are strategic constraints
Tracer availability, logistics, shelf life, and local production capacity determine whether a scanner can run at planned utilization. The IAEA reports that technetium-99m is used in about 85% of nuclear-medicine diagnostic procedures worldwide and that more than 30 million patients are examined with it annually. A reliable isotope and radiopharmacy network is therefore as important to capacity as the camera itself.

| Oncology applications | 38.4% of 2025 application revenue | Future Market Insights estimate |
| Hospitals | 47.6% of 2025 end-user revenue | Future Market Insights estimate |
| Installed SPECT/PET cameras | More than 29,000 in at least 131 countries | INIS 2026 Form 10-K; count reported as of September 2025 |
These shares explain why SPECT remains commercially important even as PET and theranostics attract attention. Hospitals remain the largest identified end-user group, while mobile and community-access models are broadening PET availability beyond a single hospital campus.
Are SPECT/CT and PET/CT the future of nuclear medicine?
| Platform | Typical strengths | Operational questions |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone SPECT | Established cardiac, bone, endocrine, and other gamma-camera studies | How much anatomical localization and quantitative capability is required? |
| SPECT/CT | Functional imaging paired with CT localization; useful for oncology, infection, bone disease, and theranostic planning | Can the site support CT radiation controls, reconstruction, and service requirements? |
| PET/CT | High-sensitivity molecular imaging for oncology, cardiology, neurology, staging, and response assessment | Are tracers, shielding, uptake rooms, and daily throughput available? |
| PET/MRI | Molecular imaging combined with superior soft-tissue and multiparametric MRI information | Can the facility fund, staff, and maintain a more complex installation? |
The practical answer is not that one modality will replace all others. SPECT has a large installed base and broad tracer use, while PET/CT is central to many oncology pathways and theranostic programs. PET/MRI is valuable in selected indications where soft-tissue contrast justifies its complexity.

How are theranostics changing imaging operations?
- Identify the molecular target. Diagnostic imaging establishes whether a patient’s disease expresses the target needed for a therapy decision.
- Quantify disease burden. Segmentation, standardized uptake or activity measurements, and repeatable reconstruction support eligibility and baseline assessment.
- Plan administered activity. Dosimetry and organ-at-risk calculations help tailor treatment while meeting radiation-safety requirements.
- Deliver and document therapy. Radiopharmacy, nursing, physics, and medical teams need coordinated scheduling, administration, monitoring, and records.
- Measure response. Follow-up imaging and longitudinal software determine whether disease biology and treatment effect are changing as expected.
This workflow explains why a scanner purchase alone does not create a theranostics service. The limiting factor may instead be isotope supply, hot-lab space, shielding, trained personnel, software integration, or regulatory approval.

What calibration equipment is needed for SPECT and PET?
Routine quality assurance uses calibration sources, phantoms, reference standards, and related radiopharmacy or shielding accessories. These products verify camera uniformity, sensitivity, energy calibration, spatial performance, activity measurement, and other checks required by local protocols and regulators.
INIS/RadQual supplies calibration and reference products for SPECT/PET cameras and radiopharmacy equipment. Its 2026 Form 10-K notes that most radioactive calibration products are replaced after approximately 18 months to two years. Replacement timing depends on the product, activity, decay, local procedures, and regulatory requirements; it is not a universal service interval for every item.
How should a healthcare system compare systems?
- Modality fit: Decide whether the service needs standalone SPECT, hybrid SPECT/CT, PET/CT, PET/MRI, or a staged combination.
- Clinical program: Map oncology, cardiology, neurology, and theranostics demand to actual referral volumes and tracer access.
- Quantification: Check lesion segmentation, kinetic analysis, dosimetry, reconstruction, and longitudinal reporting features, including validation and export options.
- Throughput: Compare scan speed, uptake-room capacity, automation, scheduling, reconstruction time, and staffing requirements.
- Radiopharmaceutical ecosystem: Confirm tracer suppliers, onsite production feasibility, delivery windows, shelf life, and contingency plans.
- Facility and compliance: Budget shielding, controlled areas, CT or MRI infrastructure, waste handling, licensing, and radiation-safety oversight.
- Serviceability: Review preventive maintenance, calibration support, uptime commitments, software updates, regulatory assistance, and replacement-part availability.
- Total economics: Include capital cost, construction, staffing, isotope waste, service contracts, reimbursement, and the cost of unused capacity.
What could limit growth through 2035?
Expansion depends on more than demand for precision imaging. Sites may face isotope shortages, short tracer half-lives, high facility costs, shortages of technologists and medical physicists, reimbursement uncertainty, and lengthy regulatory approvals. Hybrid systems also add maintenance and integration requirements. A business case that counts scanner slots but ignores radiopharmaceutical logistics or staffing can overstate usable capacity.
Even with those constraints, the direction is clear: nuclear medicine is moving toward integrated imaging, measurement, and therapy. As Jean-Luc Procaccini of GE HealthCare put it, “Nuclear medicine is moving from early innovation to large-scale clinical implementation.” Dr. Munir Ghesani of United Theranostics and Mount Sinai Health System describes the shift as moving beyond detecting disease to understanding its biology and behavior. The equipment market will benefit where health systems can turn that capability into a reliable, reimbursed clinical workflow.
