If you want to reveal what a new television, projector, soundbar or AV receiver can really do, What Hi-Fi?’s October 2026 Now Showing picks four demanding titles: Netflix’s East of Eden, MUBI’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Pearl on 4K Blu-ray or Apple TV, and The Social Network on Apple TV. East of Eden: a full-frame check of detail and color
Netflix’s adaptation follows the Trask family across three generations. Its painstaking sets and costumes give a television or projector a steady supply of fine textures, while New Zealand locations stand in for California’s Salinas Valley. Wide shots are especially revealing: look for whether distant terrain remains resolved, whether foliage turns into mush, and whether the sky holds graduations instead of breaking into obvious bands.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma: deliberate grain, difficult shadows
Starring Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder, this 2026 film was shot almost entirely on 35mm by cinematographer Eric Yue. The aim was to reproduce the grainy, noisy character of 1970s and 1980s slashers. It also uses classic glass matte painting for backgrounds rather than relying predominantly on CGI.
That texture is intentional, not a defect to be removed. On a projector or large TV, inspect whether grain stays natural during movement or turns into crawling noise. Dark scenes expose crushed shadow detail, while the matte-painted backgrounds test whether the display preserves edges and unusual visual layers without making them look unnaturally sharp. Because MUBI’s catalogue and the referenced 4K Blu-ray pre-order can differ by country and date, confirm the option available in your territory before planning a comparison.

Pearl: picture precision and a pinpoint soundstage
The 2022 film follows a farm girl caring for her ailing father while pursuing stardom. Its rural imagery is a straightforward resolution test: barley fields, cloud detail and broad farm landscapes should look clear without artificial enhancement or smeared fine texture.

The dance sequence switches the emphasis to audio. Footsteps crossing the stage should occupy stable, accurately located positions, not collapse into the center channel or wander as the performer moves. The score deliberately evokes classic Hollywood rather than a contemporary slasher, giving you a sustained opportunity to assess tonal balance as well as placement. If you use a soundbar, listen for whether the stage width survives at your normal seating position; with separate speakers, check that the image remains coherent when you move slightly off-axis.

A physical option is the Pearl 4K Blu-ray; Apple TV is the streaming alternative cited by the column. Disc and streaming presentations may not be identical, so use the same display settings when making a fair comparison.
The Social Network: a reference for movement, bass and immersion
David Fincher’s 2010 film remains a useful AV reference because of its slick presentation and fluid camera work. The electronic score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross reaches deep into the soundtrack, while the nightclub sequence contains realistic mixing that places music, voices and room energy around the listener.

Apple TV currently offers the version identified in the column as 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Dolby Vision scenes can expose whether a display keeps highlight detail while maintaining convincing blacks. In the soundtrack, listen for controlled low bass rather than a loose boom, clearly separated musical layers and a stable center image for dialogue. The interpretation of “In the Hall of the Mountain King” is another concentrated test of dynamics and imaging; the nightclub material then shows whether an Atmos system creates a believable sense of height and enclosure.
How to use the four titles as a repeatable test
- Set a baseline. Disable artificial motion, sharpness and noise-processing changes you do not normally use, and let a stream reach its highest stable quality.
- Start with the suspected weakness. Use Pearl for detail and sound placement, Camp Miasma for grain and shadows, East of Eden for color and large-scale detail, or The Social Network for bass and immersive mixing.
- Watch a representative passage. Compare wide landscapes, dark textured scenes, the dance sequence or the nightclub and score sections rather than judging a single still frame.
- Change one component at a time. Keep volume, seating position and picture mode fixed while checking a different input, speaker setting or source.
- Record what changes. Note lost shadow texture, unstable grain, smeared motion, misplaced effects, weak bass or clipped highlights; these observations point to calibration or equipment problems more reliably than overall impressions.
