Novig is a real-money exchange for sports event contracts. The company says its exchange entity, Ludlow Exchange, LLC, received CFTC Designated Contract Market status in June 2026. That federal designation does not settle whether Novig is lawful where you live. State regulators and gaming groups dispute whether these contracts fall under state gambling law, and the courts have not settled the question. Whether you can trade at all depends on where you are physically standing when you place the trade. Novig’s safety tools are its own description, and no independent evidence shows how well they work. Treat every position as money you can lose.
How Novig works
Novig describes itself as an exchange for event contracts tied to sports outcomes. Each contract is priced between $0 and $1, and that price works as the market’s live estimate of how likely the outcome is. If the outcome happens, a winning contract pays $1. If it does not, a losing contract pays $0. You fund an account with real money before you trade. These are Novig’s own descriptions of its product, not an independent assessment of how prices are set or how orders are filled.

Pricing and payouts per contract
The table shows one contract at three price levels, using a $1 payout on a win. It excludes fees, which are covered in the checklist at the end of this article.

A $0.60 price reads as a 60% market estimate of the outcome. The market can be wrong, and the price you pay is not a guarantee of anything.

Selling before settlement
You can sell a contract before the event settles rather than holding it to the end. The sale price depends on market conditions at the moment you sell, so you may receive less than you paid even if the outcome has not yet been decided.
Exchange, not sportsbook
Novig presents itself as an exchange, where prices come from trading, including trades between users. It contrasts this with a bookmaker that posts fixed odds and takes the other side of your bet. That is how the company describes its model. The structure does not make trading less risky and does not guarantee a better price.

Is Novig legal in my state?
Novig is not legal or illegal under a single blanket rule. Your situation depends on three things: what Novig says about its federal status, where the legal argument currently stands, and which locations Novig itself blocks.

What Novig says about its federal status
Novig’s help center describes the company as a CFTC-regulated prediction market and a Designated Contract Market, with a federal licensing basis rather than a state sportsbook license. Its June 16, 2026 announcement says the CFTC designated Ludlow Exchange, LLC on that date. These are company statements. A federal designation tells you who oversees the exchange at the federal level. It does not confirm that every state’s gambling law leaves sports event contracts alone.

Where the legal argument stands
- The CFTC’s position. The CFTC has publicly asserted jurisdiction over registered contract markets and has filed cases against states that seek to apply gambling laws to prediction markets.
- The industry’s position. The American Gaming Association has argued in congressional testimony that sports event contracts undermine state gaming oversight and consumer protections. That is the position of an industry group, not a court holding.
- A court ruling on a different operator. In August 2026, a Ninth Circuit panel declined to let Kalshi resume sports and election trading in Nevada while its case continues. The panel found Kalshi had not shown that federal law likely preempts Nevada’s gaming laws, according to an Associated Press report. The ruling concerns Kalshi, not Novig, but it shows that federal preemption is still contested in court.
Locations Novig currently blocks
Novig’s help pages, as reviewed in September 2026, list Arizona, Nevada, and Michigan as unavailable. Availability depends on your physical location when you trade, so a traveler can be blocked while visiting from a state where Novig is otherwise offered. Two limits apply. This article can confirm only the three named exclusions, not a complete list of enabled states, and availability lists change. Not being on the blocked list is not the same as being cleared under your state’s law.

Safety here has two parts: how the platform handles harmful play, and the financial risk of the trades themselves. The financial risk is not in doubt. Real money goes in, and a losing contract settles at zero, as the table above shows.

These are commitments the company says it has adopted. No independent evaluation of how these tools perform is available, so treat them as stated controls rather than proof of protection.

What the available evidence does not show
- Harm outcomes. Independent data on user losses, problem-gambling outcomes, and complaint rates is not established here.
- Scale is not safety. Novig reported more than $5 billion in cumulative trading volume in its June 16, 2026 designation announcement, and more than $6 billion in its August 4, 2026 launch announcement. Both figures are company-reported and measure activity, not safety or product quality.
- Advocacy is not neutral. The American Gaming Association’s testimony is the view of a gaming-industry group. It should be read as advocacy about prediction markets in general, not as a neutral finding about Novig.
Before you deposit
