Nothing Phone 3 vs. Google Pixel 9: Camera, Software, and Value Compared

Short answer: choose the Nothing Phone (3) if you want a larger 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, a dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera, and 256GB in the listed 12GB configuration. Choose the Google Pixel 9 if a clearly documented long support life and a smaller 6.3-inch phone matter more. The Pixel 9 has Google’s published seven-year promise for operating-system, security, and Pixel Drop updates; Nothing’s official Phone (3) material reviewed here does not state an equivalent duration. A camera winner cannot be established from megapixel counts or specifications alone, and no controlled direct Phone (3)-versus-Pixel 9 test is documented here.

Nothing Phone (3) vs. Pixel 9 at a glance

Category Nothing Phone (3) Google Pixel 9 What it means
Rear cameras 50MP main, 50MP periscope telephoto, 50MP ultrawide 50MP wide, 48MP ultrawide with Macro Focus Phone (3) has dedicated optical zoom hardware; Pixel 9 relies on its main and ultrawide cameras.
Telephoto 3x optical zoom; optical image stabilization on the periscope camera No dedicated telephoto camera listed for the base Pixel 9 Phone (3) should be the more flexible choice for distant subjects, but image quality still depends on processing and the shooting conditions.
Front camera 50MP Not specified in the cited Pixel hardware summary A higher resolution number does not by itself establish better selfies.
Display 6.67-inch, 120Hz AMOLED 6.3-inch display Phone (3) offers more screen area; Pixel 9 is the more compact option.
Documented update policy Duration not stated in the official Phone (3) material used here Seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates from first US Google Store availability Pixel 9 has the stronger published support commitment.
Price evidence $699 displayed in the US for 12GB/256GB when the page was accessed in 2026; UK launch RRPs were £799 for 12GB/256GB and £899 for 16GB/512GB No current local price was verified in the cited material Compare live prices for the same storage, condition, warranty, and seller before deciding on value.

The table separates published specifications from conclusions that require testing. Nothing’s camera page lists four 50MP cameras, but four equal-resolution sensors do not prove that every camera produces equally good images. Google’s Pixel 9 specification lists a 50MP wide camera and a 48MP ultrawide with Macro Focus; it does not list the Pro models’ dedicated telephoto hardware for the base Pixel 9.

Camera hardware: optical reach versus a simpler two-camera setup

What the Phone (3) includes

Nothing’s UK specification describes a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization and a 1/1.3-inch sensor, a 50MP periscope camera with optical image stabilization and 3x optical zoom, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP front camera. The US and UK product pages present this as a four-camera 50MP system.

The periscope module is the major hardware difference. At its native 3x optical focal length, it frames a subject without enlarging the central portion of the main-camera image. That is useful for portraits, stage performances, signs, pets, and other subjects that are too far away for a comfortable 1x composition. Optical stabilization on the periscope can help reduce hand movement, although stabilization cannot freeze a moving subject or guarantee a sharp photograph in dim light.

Nothing also advertises 6x lossless zoom and up to 60x “ultra zoom.” Those are manufacturer claims about its processing and zoom modes, not independently verified quality levels. Treat 3x optical zoom as the clearly specified capability; evaluate any higher setting with actual samples before relying on it.

What the Pixel 9 includes

Google’s official Pixel hardware specifications list a 50MP wide camera and a 48MP ultrawide camera with Macro Focus for Pixel 9. Macro Focus lets the ultrawide camera focus at close range for small subjects, food, documents, and detail shots. The base Pixel 9 specification does not include a dedicated telephoto camera, so do not transfer the Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL telephoto specification to this model.

Without a telephoto module, the Pixel 9’s zoomed compositions must come from cropping the wide camera, computational processing, or switching to the ultrawide at close distances. That can be perfectly adequate for occasional zoom, but it is a different capability from Phone (3)’s native 3x optical view.

Why megapixels do not settle the comparison

Resolution is only one part of a camera system. Sensor size, lens brightness, stabilization, autofocus behavior, image processing, noise reduction, HDR decisions, and the phone’s treatment of skin and fine texture all affect the final image. A 50MP camera can produce a worse low-light photograph than a lower-resolution camera if it has less useful light or more aggressive processing.

For this matchup, compare the cameras by role rather than by the largest number printed on the specification sheet:

  • Daylight main camera: inspect fine foliage, hair, text, and building detail at 1x, along with color consistency between frames.
  • Indoor and night scenes: check shadow noise, highlight clipping, motion blur, and whether faces remain natural when the subject moves.
  • Portraits: examine hair, glasses, fingers, clothing edges, and skin tones. A telephoto portrait can give a different perspective from a 1x crop even when both files have similar pixel dimensions.
  • Ultrawide: look for stretched corners, uneven sharpness, color shifts relative to the main camera, and close-focus performance.
  • Zoom: compare Phone (3) at its native 3x optical setting with Pixel 9 at the closest equivalent framing. Record the distance and avoid judging a 3x photograph against a much closer 1x shot.
  • Selfies: evaluate facial texture, exposure against a bright background, hair detail, and consistency between the front and rear cameras.
  • Video: check stabilization while walking, focus changes, exposure transitions, microphone clarity, and the way each phone handles mixed lighting.

Use the same scene, distance, aspect ratio, resolution mode, HDR setting, and software version for both phones. Keep lenses clean, let each camera focus, and compare original files rather than screenshots or compressed social-media copies.

A Tom’s Guide Phone (3) review contains that publication’s own impressions and sample comparisons, including a Pixel 9 Pro XL. Because the comparison device was the Pro XL rather than the base Pixel 9, those observations cannot decide this specific head-to-head. They should be read as the named publication’s testing, not as a direct test of the two phones in this article.

Software and update support

Pixel 9: a precise seven-year commitment

Google’s Pixel hardware specifications state: “7 years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates.” The footnote defines the starting point as the date each Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL first became available on the Google Store in the United States.

That wording covers three kinds of support: major Android operating-system releases, security patches, and Pixel Drop feature updates. The clock is tied to first US Google Store availability, not to the day an individual buyer activates a phone or purchases it from a later retailer. A buyer of a used or discounted unit therefore does not receive a fresh seven-year period.

Phone (3): support duration is not established here

Nothing’s official Phone (3) pages describe Nothing OS and its features, but the material used for this comparison does not state a clear number of years for Android upgrades or security patches. Do not replace that missing duration with a third-party estimate or with a policy from another Nothing model.

This does not prove that Phone (3) will receive fewer updates; it means the duration is not documented in the cited official product material. Ask Nothing or check its current support-policy page before purchase if a specific ownership horizon is essential. Until a directly supporting policy is available, Pixel 9 has the stronger documented commitment.

How support changes the value calculation

Long support can make a phone easier to keep as a primary device, pass to another family member, or resell while it still receives security fixes. It can also reduce the pressure to replace hardware simply because software support is ending. Conversely, a shorter or unclear policy may matter less to someone who replaces phones frequently, uses a carrier upgrade cycle, or prioritizes camera hardware and screen size over a long ownership period.

Display size and everyday handling

Nothing lists a 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED display for Phone (3). Google lists the Pixel 9 at 6.3 inches. The nearly half-inch difference is significant when reading, editing photos, watching video, using split-screen layouts, or typing on a larger keyboard.

A smaller display can be easier to operate one-handed and may fit pockets or compact vehicle mounts more comfortably. A larger panel can make on-screen controls and text easier to see, but it may require more hand movement and occupy more space in a pocket or bag. Screen size alone does not establish which phone is more comfortable; hand size, case thickness, weight, balance, and your normal grip are decisive.

Nothing’s specification explicitly gives a 120Hz refresh rate. The Pixel hardware summary cited here gives the 6.3-inch size but does not establish a directly comparable refresh-rate figure in this article’s evidence. Do not infer a Pixel display specification from a Pro model or from a retailer listing for a different edition.

Price and value: compare like with like

What is documented for Phone (3)

Nothing’s US product page displayed $699 for a selected 12GB/256GB Phone (3) configuration when accessed in 2026. That is a page-level displayed price for a particular region and configuration, not a guaranteed price for every buyer or retailer. Taxes, shipping, stock, promotions, financing, and trade-in terms can change the amount paid.

Nothing’s UK pre-order terms listed launch recommended retail prices of £799 for 12GB/256GB and £899 for 16GB/512GB. Omdia’s July 2025 smartphone report also described a £799 UK starting price. Those are launch-period figures from 2025, not proof of the current UK street price in 2026. The official UK listing is regional and should be checked again before publication or purchase.

What is not documented for Pixel 9 here

No current Pixel 9 price was verified in the cited material. That makes a universal claim that one phone is cheaper or offers better value unreliable. Pixel 9 pricing can vary by country, storage tier, retailer, condition, carrier, trade-in, and temporary discount.

A fair value comparison checklist

Check both phones on the same date and in the same country, then record the variables that can change the result:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Match storage capacity. Compare 256GB with 256GB where possible rather than comparing a higher-capacity Phone (3) with a smaller Pixel 9.
  2. Match condition: new, manufacturer-refurbished, retailer-refurbished, and used devices are not equivalent.
  3. Confirm the seller, warranty length, return period, and regional model or network compatibility.
  4. Subtract only discounts or trade-in credits that the buyer can actually obtain, and state whether a price requires a carrier plan or financing.
  5. Account for the ownership period. Pixel 9’s documented seven-year support window may be worth paying for if you plan to keep the phone for many years.
  6. Assign a real value to hardware you will use. Phone (3)’s telephoto camera and larger display matter more to a frequent zoom shooter or media viewer than to someone who mostly uses 1x photos and messaging.

Which phone fits which buyer?

Choose Phone (3) when camera versatility and screen area come first

  • You regularly shoot subjects at 3x distance and want a dedicated periscope camera rather than a crop from the main sensor.
  • You prefer a 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED display for reading, video, games, photo editing, or split-screen work.
  • The listed 12GB/256GB configuration suits your storage needs and its live local price is competitive with the Pixel 9 at the same capacity and condition.
  • You are comfortable verifying Nothing’s current update policy separately because the duration is not stated in the official material used here.

Choose Pixel 9 when documented longevity and compact size come first

  • You want Google’s explicit seven-year OS, security, and Pixel Drop commitment, counted from first US Google Store availability.
  • You prefer a 6.3-inch phone for one-handed use, pockets, or a smaller overall footprint.
  • Your photography is mostly 1x, ultrawide, close-up, and computationally processed scenes, so a dedicated telephoto is not essential.
  • You can obtain a substantially better current local price, warranty, or trade-in offer after matching storage and condition.

Do not choose from the camera specification alone

If photography is the deciding factor, make a short sample set before buying or rely on a genuinely controlled comparison of the base Pixel 9 and Phone (3). Include daylight detail, indoor faces, night scenes, 3x subjects, ultrawide corners, macro close-ups, selfies, and walking video. A review of Phone (3) against Pixel 9 Pro XL, or a comparison of Pixel 9 Pro against Phone (3), is not a substitute for the exact models here.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing Pixel 9 with Pixel 9 Pro

The base Pixel 9 specification cited here has a 50MP wide and 48MP ultrawide camera with Macro Focus. Do not assume it has the Pro model’s telephoto camera. Verify the exact model name on the product page, box, invoice, and camera specifications.

Treating every zoom label as optical

Phone (3)’s 3x optical zoom is the clearly specified optical capability. Its advertised 6x lossless and up-to-60x ultra-zoom modes are processing claims. Ask whether a review is discussing the native 3x camera or a digitally processed setting.

Using launch price as today’s price

The £799 and £899 UK figures describe Phone (3) launch RRPs in 2025. They do not account for later discounts, stock shortages, retailer pricing, or regional taxes. The $699 US figure was displayed for one configuration when accessed in 2026 and can also change.

Assuming an unclear support policy is a promise

Nothing OS features do not establish how many Android-version or security updates Phone (3) will receive. Get a current, model-specific policy if the phone must remain supported for a defined number of years.

Comparing different storage tiers

A higher-capacity phone can appear expensive or cheap simply because the comparison uses different storage. Put storage, RAM, condition, warranty, and seller in the same row before judging value.

Bottom line for the decision

Phone (3) is the hardware-flexibility choice: it combines a larger 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED display with a three-camera rear system that includes a stabilized 3x optical periscope and a 256GB base configuration in the US listing cited here. Pixel 9 is the support-certainty and compact-size choice: Google documents seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates from first US Google Store availability, and its 6.3-inch display is easier to handle for buyers who do not want a large phone.

Before paying, verify the current price for both models at the same storage capacity and in the same condition, and use exact-model camera samples if photography is decisive. On the evidence available here, Phone (3) has the more versatile camera hardware on paper, while Pixel 9 has the clearer long-term software commitment; neither fact alone makes it the universal winner.
