What to check before opening the install prompt
An over-the-air (OTA) update changes core phone software, so preparation matters more than the number of taps. Nothing’s own guidance focuses on four practical safeguards: a reliable network, enough power, a current backup, and awareness of the release type. Complete those checks before downloading a package rather than after the installation screen appears.

Use a stable Wi-Fi connection
Join a dependable Wi-Fi network before checking or downloading the update. Nothing recommends Wi-Fi for a smooth download and installation. It reduces the chance that a weak connection interrupts the transfer and avoids using mobile data for a potentially large system package. If the Wi-Fi signal is unreliable, move closer to the router or wait until you can use a more stable network.
Reach 50% battery or connect a charger
Nothing specifies a battery level of at least 50% for downloading and installing an update. You can also keep the Phone (3) connected to a compatible USB-C wall charger throughout the process. The 50% figure is an installation recommendation from Nothing, not a measured performance statistic. Do not begin with a nearly empty battery simply because the update screen is available.

Back up the information you cannot replace
Save important photos, contacts, messages and call logs before proceeding. Nothing describes a backup as good practice for OTA updates and specifically advises it for the OS 5.0 Open Beta. Verify that the backup has completed before you start the install; an update is designed to preserve your data, but a backup gives you a recovery option if something unexpected happens.
Two ways to check whether a Nothing OS update is available
Use the main System updates screen
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Choose System updates.
- Let the phone check for an available OTA package and read the version information shown on screen.
This is the normal path for checking and installing a Nothing Phone (3) software update. If a package is offered, do not start the download until the Wi-Fi, battery and backup checks are complete.
Check from Software info
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Open Software info.
- Look for the Nothing OS entry. Nothing documents a red icon beside Nothing OS as an indication that an update is available.
This second route is useful when you are checking the current software status rather than immediately installing. Return to Settings > System > System updates to perform the actual OTA update.

Pre-install checklist for the Phone (3)

Stable OTA or Open Beta: decide before installing
A stable OTA and an Open Beta are not interchangeable update choices. The stable release is the normal channel for a phone you need to rely on every day. Open Beta software is pre-release. Nothing warns that it may contain bugs or affect device stability, battery life and performance.

Choose the Open Beta only if you accept pre-release behavior and have a backup of information you need. If dependable battery life, performance and stability are more important than early features, remain on the stable channel.
Joining the Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta on Phone (3)
Nothing’s OS 5.0 Open Beta instructions include a specific prerequisite for Phone (3). The device must already be running stable build Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733. Check the installed build in the phone’s software information before attempting enrollment.
- Confirm that the Phone (3) is on stable build Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Open Nothing Beta Hub.
- Tap Check Version.
- Choose Join Beta and follow the on-screen enrollment instructions.
Do the backup, Wi-Fi and power checks before enrollment as well as before the eventual installation. Enrollment does not change the fact that OS 5.0 Open Beta is pre-release software.

- Connect the Phone (3) to stable Wi-Fi.
- Raise the battery to at least 50% or connect a compatible USB-C charger.
- Back up photos, contacts, messages and call logs.
- Open Settings > System > System updates and review the offered package and release type.
- Start the download and installation from the update screen.
- After the upgrade begins, do not press the power button or perform other actions. Leave the phone undisturbed until the process is complete.
Nothing’s support instruction is explicit: “Don’t press the power button or perform any actions during the upgrade process, and wait for the update to be completed.” Treat the automatic restart as part of the installation, not as a sign that you should intervene.

What to expect while the phone restarts
The Phone (3) may restart automatically during installation. The display can change as the update applies and the device reboots. Do not force a shutdown, repeatedly press buttons or try to use apps during this stage. Keep the phone connected to its charger if you chose the charging option, and wait for the normal completion screen or the regular lock screen to return.
The safest action during this phase is no action. An interrupted upgrade can leave the phone in an unfinished state, while Nothing’s instructions specifically require waiting for completion.
Confirm the result after installation
- Wait until the automatic restart and completion sequence has ended.
- Open Settings > System > System updates again.
- Read the status shown on the update screen.
- If no newer package is offered, Nothing says the phone is up to date.
You can also revisit Settings > About phone > Software info to review the Nothing OS information. A red icon that previously indicated an available update should no longer be present when the device has completed the offered update.

When the update screen does not behave as expected
No update is offered
Check the path carefully: Settings > System > System updates. If the screen reports that no newer version is available, Nothing’s guidance treats the phone as up to date. You can also look at Settings > About phone > Software info for the Nothing OS status indicator.

The download will not start smoothly
Reconnect to a stable Wi-Fi network and confirm that the battery is at least 50% or that the phone is on a charger. These are the conditions Nothing gives for a smooth download and installation. Avoid switching to an unreliable connection midway through the download.
You are unsure whether to accept an Open Beta
Read the release label before tapping install. If it says Open Beta, remember that Nothing classifies it as pre-release and warns of possible effects on stability, battery life and performance. Stay with the stable release if those risks are unacceptable for your primary phone.
The phone restarts during the upgrade
An automatic restart can be normal during installation. Do not press the power button or perform other actions; wait until the update has completed, then return to the update screen to verify the status.

A simple decision rule before you tap Install
- Install now: You are on stable Wi-Fi, have at least 50% battery or a connected charger, completed a backup, and understand that the offered package is the release type you want.
- Wait: The battery is low, the network is unstable, the backup has not finished, or you cannot leave the phone undisturbed for the full upgrade.
- Decline Open Beta: You depend on predictable stability, battery life or performance and do not want pre-release software on the Phone (3).
- Join Open Beta: You accept those trade-offs, have the required stable build Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733, and are prepared to enroll through Settings > System > Nothing Beta Hub > Check Version > Join Beta.
Following this sequence keeps the update process straightforward: verify availability, prepare the connection and power, protect your data, choose the appropriate release channel, and then leave the Phone (3) untouched until it finishes.
