There is no single “best” Nothing Phone (3) camera setup. Better results come from choosing the right camera for the perspective, then enabling the mode that matches the scene: Ultra XDR for difficult brightness, Portrait for deliberate background blur, and Action for moving subjects. Save a combination you use often with Personal Presets, if that feature appears in your installed Camera app.
The guidance below is based on Nothing’s published specifications and support instructions. Menu names can change with Nothing OS and Camera updates, and the manufacturer’s feature descriptions are not independent image-quality tests.

Start with the camera viewpoint, not a zoom number
The Nothing Phone (3) has four 50-megapixel cameras. Nothing lists the main camera at a 24 mm equivalent focal length, with a 1/1.3-inch sensor, f/1.68 aperture and optical image stabilisation (OIS). The periscope telephoto is a 70 mm equivalent, uses OIS and provides 3× optical zoom. The ultra-wide is 15 mm with a 114-degree field of view, while the front camera is 24 mm with an 81.2-degree field of view. These are manufacturer specifications, not a ranking of measured image quality.

| Camera | Published specification | Use it when | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main | 24 mm equivalent; 1/1.3-inch sensor; f/1.68; OIS | Everyday subjects, people, food and general scenes | Its normal perspective may not fit very large scenes without stepping back |
| Periscope telephoto | 70 mm equivalent; 3× optical zoom; OIS | Distant details, tighter portraits and subjects you cannot approach | It gives a narrower view; digital magnification beyond the optical range is not the same as optical detail |
| Ultra-wide | 15 mm equivalent; 114° field of view | Architecture, interiors, landscapes and groups in confined spaces | Objects near the edges can look stretched, especially when the phone is tilted |
| Front | 24 mm equivalent; 81.2° field of view | Selfies and video calls | A wider view includes more background but can exaggerate facial features at very close range |
As a practical rule, move your feet before increasing magnification. Use the main camera for a natural-looking distance, switch to 3× when you want a tighter composition without walking closer, and choose ultra-wide only when the extra scene width is worth the perspective change. Nothing advertises 6× lossless zoom and up to 60× “ultra zoom,” but those claims do not establish that extreme magnification will retain the same detail as the 3× optical camera.

Use Ultra XDR when the scene contains bright and dark areas
Ultra XDR photo is Nothing’s computational option for scenes such as a person standing near a bright window, a sunset with a dark foreground, or a street containing both deep shade and direct sunlight. Nothing says the phone captures 13 RAW frames at different exposures and merges them. It also describes on-screen pixel brightness as being boosted by up to 12 times.
That display-brightness statement should not be read as “12 times more captured detail.” The useful expectation is a more vivid-looking result across different brightness levels, produced by multi-exposure processing. Turn Ultra XDR on when a single exposure would force you to choose between a washed-out sky and a very dark subject. For evenly lit scenes, compare it with ordinary Photo mode; extra processing is not automatically preferable.
How to judge the result
- Check the brightest area, such as clouds or a lamp, for clipped highlights.
- Inspect shadow areas for unnatural halos or over-brightened noise.
- Look at moving people or leaves. Multiple exposures can make movement harder to combine cleanly.
- Compare the saved image at normal viewing size rather than judging only the brighter preview on the phone’s display.
Choose Portrait Mode for intentional subject separation
Nothing says Portrait Mode uses AI subject segmentation to identify parts of a person, including clothing, skin and fine hair detail, then produces bokeh and skin tones. Select it when the subject should stand out from the background rather than when you simply want a close-up.

Before sharing a portrait, zoom in on hair, glasses, fingers and the outline of clothing. Segmentation errors are most visible around fine strands and overlapping objects. Keep the subject separated from a complicated background when possible, and make sure there is enough light for the phone to distinguish the person from what is behind them. These are shooting practices, not a guarantee that every edge will be perfect.
Switch to Action Mode for detected movement
Action Mode is designed for children running, pets, sport and other subjects that can blur during an ordinary capture. Nothing describes it as dynamically accelerating shutter speed when AI detects motion and says it can capture eight Ultra XDR photos in three seconds.
Try Action Mode when movement is the problem, then compare the result with a normal photo from the same moment. The published description does not guarantee blur-free images in every lighting condition: a faster shutter can require more amplification in a dim scene, and unpredictable movement can still defeat the capture. Give the subject as much light as practical and keep the phone pointed steadily through the sequence.

Build a repeatable setup with Personal Presets
Nothing advertises Personal Presets as a way to save, switch and share your own camera settings. This is useful if you repeatedly photograph the same type of subject, such as indoor products, family portraits or evening streets.
The exact control name and tap-by-tap path were not established in the available product material. Open the installed Camera app and look for a Personal Presets option in its settings or mode controls; use the label shown on your phone rather than following an assumed path from another software version. Once available, create separate presets for different jobs instead of forcing one configuration onto every scene. For example, a daylight preset might use ordinary Photo mode, while a backlit-subject preset can include Ultra XDR. Recheck saved presets after a major Nothing OS or Camera update.
A practical scene-by-scene decision guide
Bright outdoor landscape
- Start with the main camera for its 24 mm perspective.
- Switch to ultra-wide only if the composition needs the 15 mm, 114-degree view.
- Enable Ultra XDR when the sky and foreground differ strongly in brightness.
- Keep vertical lines straight by holding the phone level, particularly with the ultra-wide camera.
Backlit person
- Use the main camera for a natural working distance.
- Try Portrait Mode if you want background separation and the person is reasonably still.
- Try Ultra XDR when the background is much brighter than the face.
- Inspect hair and clothing edges before choosing the final image.
Moving child, pet or athlete
- Choose Action Mode first.
- Keep the subject in good light and follow the motion smoothly.
- Take several opportunities rather than relying on one frame.
- Compare Action Mode with ordinary Photo mode if the subject pauses or the light is low.
Distant subject
- Use the 3× periscope camera when its tighter 70 mm perspective fits the composition.
- Remain at 3× when possible; advertised 6× lossless and up to 60× ultra-zoom modes should not be treated as equivalent to optical zoom.
- Brace the phone against a solid surface for a steadier frame, even though the telephoto has OIS.
Selfie or group selfie
- Use the front camera’s 24 mm view when you need a straightforward selfie.
- Step back slightly if faces look stretched at close range.
- Use Portrait Mode only when the person is relatively still and you can check the subject outline afterward.
Settings that are related to recording, not still-photo quality
Do not confuse the rear recording light with a still-photo enhancement. Nothing’s support instructions place it at Camera > Video > Settings > Rec.light. The same instruction says it is supported only for rear-camera video recording. It is an indicator for recording, not a setting that improves a photograph.

For video, launch Camera and select Video from the mode-selection bar. Nothing advertises recording up to 4K at 60 frames per second. That specification applies to video capture and should not be used to infer still-photo performance.
When changing settings is not the real fix
If the Camera app is slow, freezes or fails to save images, treat the problem as a device or app issue rather than continually changing photo modes. Nothing’s support guidance is symptom-specific.
The camera is slow
- Close unnecessary background apps.
- Clear the Camera app’s storage or cache using the app-management controls in Nothing OS.
- Restart the phone and check for a system or Camera update.
Photos do not save
- Check available phone storage first.
- Clear Camera storage or cache, then try another capture.
- Install pending updates.
- If the issue continues, Nothing’s support guidance includes restoring the phone; back up important data before any reset.
Focus is delayed
- Check whether a third-party app may be interfering with camera access.
- Clear the Camera cache and restart the phone.
- Update or restore the device if the delay persists.
- Contact Nothing Support when the problem remains after these steps.
The app freezes
Restarting and clearing Camera storage may help. Nothing notes that clearing Camera storage does not delete photos. A factory reset is a last resort: follow the manufacturer’s backup instructions first and use support if you are unsure.
A compact setup to try first
For most owners, begin with the main camera in ordinary Photo mode. Select the ultra-wide lens for genuinely wider compositions, the 3× telephoto for distant framing, Ultra XDR for strongly mixed brightness, Portrait Mode for a still person whose background should soften, and Action Mode when movement is the reason ordinary photos blur. Save combinations that suit your recurring subjects with Personal Presets if the option is present, and verify the labels after updates.
