Nothing describes OS 5.0 as an open beta/pre-release that may affect stability, battery life and performance; it also warns that a phone can become temporarily warmer and use more power after installation.
Restart the phone, leave the screen off while it charges overnight, and use it normally for 2–3 days. That is Nothing’s stated optimization window, not a guarantee. If drain remains high, use Settings > Battery > Battery usage to identify whether the display, mobile network, an app or Android system activity is responsible, then apply the targeted fix below.

What to expect after Nothing OS 5.0
A major system update can trigger indexing, app optimization, data synchronization and other background work. Those tasks can temporarily increase processor use, radio activity and warmth. Nothing’s official OS 5.0 information labels the release an open beta/pre-release and says it may contain bugs or affect device stability, battery life and performance. The same notice says the phone may temporarily become warmer and consume more power after updating.
Nothing’s battery guidance gives a practical recovery routine: restart with the screen off, charge for a whole night, and allow 2–3 days of normal use for consumption to settle. Treat this as an expected adjustment period rather than a promise that every phone will recover. A device that continues losing charge rapidly, heats up while idle or has charging problems needs diagnosis instead of endless waiting.

Find the process that is using the battery
Battery percentage alone cannot tell you whether the cause is software, reception, display settings or a demanding workload. Start with the usage list so every later change has a measurable target.
Read the battery-usage categories
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Menu wording can differ slightly by Nothing model and Android version.
- Look for the largest consumer and note its category. Common entries are Screen, Mobile network, a named application or Android system.
- Record when the increase occurred and whether the phone was in use, idle, charging or in a weak-signal location. A high screen share points toward brightness or screen-on time; mobile network points toward reception or 5G; one app points toward background activity; Android system after an update may reflect ongoing optimization.
- Make one change at a time and check the list again after a normal period of use. Changing every setting at once hides the cause and makes it difficult to restore useful features.
Interpret an unusual result
- Screen: Brightness, long timeout, high-refresh behavior and constant display use are the first items to check.
- Mobile network: The modem may be working harder in weak 5G, 4G or indoor coverage. Compare the same location on 4G/LTE.
- A single app: Restrict its background activity, update it, or uninstall it if the problem began after installation.
- Android system: Finish the overnight charge and normal-use optimization period, install available updates, and escalate if abnormal heat or drain persists without an identifiable workload.
A safe post-update stabilization procedure
Use this sequence before making disruptive changes. It preserves your data and provides a clear baseline.
- Restart once. A restart closes stuck processes and lets the new system build a clean session.
- Charge overnight with the display off. Use a compatible charger and cable, keep ventilation clear, and do not play games or stream video while charging.
- Use the phone normally for 2–3 days. Include your usual calls, messaging, Wi-Fi and commuting pattern so the result reflects real conditions. Do not treat a single percentage drop as a test result.
- Install Nothing OS updates. Open Settings > System > System update (the exact path can vary) and install the latest build offered for your model. Nothing advises staying on the latest available build.
- Update Play Store applications. Google notes that app updates can fix battery bugs. Open the Play Store, select your account icon, choose Manage apps & device, and install pending updates.
- Recheck Battery usage. If one category remains dominant, move to the matching section rather than repeating the full cycle.
Test 4G/LTE when mobile-network use is high
5G can improve speed, but it can also increase consumption in marginal coverage. Nothing says that some phones keep 4G active alongside 5G, and a weak signal makes the handset transmit more power while searching for or maintaining service. A weak Wi-Fi or SIM signal can have a similar effect.

Run a reversible network comparison
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Select the SIM you use for data, then open Preferred network type.
- Choose the 4G/LTE option instead of 5G for a day in the places where drain is worst.
- Compare battery usage, warmth, call reliability and data performance with your normal 5G setting.
- Restore 5G if the difference is negligible or if you need its speed. Keep LTE only when the battery benefit in your own coverage is worth the slower peak data rate.
This test does not repair a carrier outage or a damaged antenna. If the phone shows poor service everywhere, test another location or SIM before blaming Nothing OS.
Control background apps and radios
An app that wakes frequently can consume power while the screen is off. Newly installed or recently updated apps deserve special attention, especially when their name appears near the top of Battery usage.
Restrict a high-use app
- Open the app’s entry from Settings > Battery > Battery usage, or open Settings > Apps > See all apps and select it.
- Check for an available battery or background-activity control. Restrict background use when the app does not need continuous syncing.
- Use the app normally and watch for delayed notifications, slower message delivery or missed background uploads.
- If the app is unnecessary or the drain started immediately after installing it, uninstall it and compare the next day.
Restrictions are not appropriate for every service. Messaging, alarm, accessibility, health and work apps may need background access; a delayed notification is a feature trade-off, not evidence that the setting failed.

Disable radios you are not using
Turn off Bluetooth, NFC, GPS/location or hotspot when they are not needed. Location-dependent apps may request location again when opened, so this is reversible. Battery Saver can limit background work and location while the screen is off; enable it when you need longer runtime and accept that synchronization or notifications may be less immediate.
Reduce display demand
The display is often the largest controllable consumer because brightness and screen-on time scale with every minute you use the phone.
- Lower brightness to the minimum that remains comfortable indoors.
- Enable adaptive brightness so the sensor adjusts output instead of holding a bright manual level.
- Shorten Screen timeout so an unattended display turns off sooner.
- Try Dark theme, particularly if your model uses an OLED panel and you spend long periods in dark interfaces.
- Use Battery Saver during long days or travel; it can reduce background activity and location work while the screen is off.
Labels and locations can differ by model and Android version. Do not disable a display feature that you rely on for accessibility; choose the smallest change that reduces unused screen time.

Match the fix to your workload
Games, long video playback, navigation, camera recording and streaming keep several components active at once: the display, processor, radios and speakers. Their faster drain is expected during the activity and does not by itself prove that Nothing OS 5.0 is malfunctioning.
Separate workload drain from idle drain
- Note the battery level before starting a familiar task, such as a fixed-length video or a normal commute with navigation.
- Repeat the task under similar brightness, signal and temperature conditions after making one setting change.
- Compare idle behavior separately by leaving the screen off for a comparable period. A phone that loses power mainly during gaming has a different problem from one that drains in a pocket overnight.
Heat accelerates battery loss. A demanding task in a hot car, direct sun or poorly ventilated case can therefore look worse than the same task in a cool room.

Prevent heat during charging and use
Nothing says its phones are generally suitable for ambient use from 0–35°C and recommends charging from 15–35°C. These are ambient-temperature guidance ranges, not a promise that the battery will remain cool during every workload.

- Remove a thick case temporarily if the phone is hot while charging.
- Do not game, record long video or stream demanding content while charging.
- Keep the phone and charger away from bedding, direct sun and blocked vents.
- Use the official charger and cable, or a qualified compatible charger and cable with the required USB-C power-delivery support.
- Replace a cable or charger only when the existing equipment is missing, damaged or incompatible. A new accessory is not a guaranteed software fix.
Warmth immediately after the update can fit Nothing’s stated temporary behavior. Heat without an obvious workload, repeated charging stops or a phone that stays abnormal after the diagnostic steps is a reason to stop testing and seek support.

When the problem is not normal optimization
Escalate instead of continuing to change settings when any of these symptoms appears:

- Charging repeatedly pauses, stops or behaves inconsistently with known-good equipment.
- Battery usage remains extreme after the restart, overnight charge and normal-use adjustment period, with no app or signal explanation.
- The same drain occurs across different locations, Wi-Fi networks, SIM conditions and workloads.
- The phone shuts down unexpectedly, swells, emits an unusual smell or shows physical damage. Stop using it and seek professional help immediately.
Back up important data and contact Nothing customer support or a designated repair center for persistent unexplained heat, charging failure or suspected hardware trouble. Keep a note of the Battery usage category, update build, temperature, charger and circumstances; that information helps support reproduce the issue.
Factory reset is the last software step
A reset can remove corrupted settings or an app configuration that survives ordinary troubleshooting, but it erases the phone. Google advises backing up first.
- Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, files and any app-specific content that is not automatically synchronized.
- Confirm that you know the Google account credentials and screen lock needed to set the phone up again.
- Use the reset option under the system settings for your Nothing model, read the deletion warning, and start only when the backup is verified.
- After setup, install system updates, observe battery behavior before restoring every app, and add applications in stages. If drain returns after a particular app is restored, investigate that app rather than resetting repeatedly.
Do not reset a phone that is dangerously hot, physically damaged or repeatedly failing to charge; those symptoms require support or repair assessment.
