Nothing Ear (Open) vs. Nothing Ear: Which Earbuds Fit Your Needs?

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Choose Nothing Ear (open) if you want to hear your surroundings while listening. Its open-ear design uses a silicone hook and keeps the ear canal unsealed, making it the more suitable concept for walking, working around other people, or any situation where background awareness matters.

Choose Nothing Ear if you want an in-ear seal, active noise cancellation, and longer stated battery endurance. It is the better match for commuting, focused listening, and users who want to reduce outside sound. Neither model can be declared universally better for sound quality or comfort from the available evidence: Nothing publishes designs and specifications, but no independent head-to-head listening or fit test establishes a winner.

How the two wearing designs differ

Nothing Ear (open): sound without sealing the canal

Nothing describes Ear (open) as using open sound technology. A lightweight earbud sits outside the canal and is supported by a silicone hook. The design goal is that music does not block the background: you can hear people, traffic, announcements and other activity around you while audio is playing.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is an intentional trade-off, not a missing setting. Because the ear is not sealed, the product is not presented as noise-isolating. A busy street, office conversation or aircraft cabin can remain audible, and the amount of outside sound you perceive will depend on volume, surroundings and your individual fit. The open design can be useful when awareness is part of the task, but it is not the choice for maximum isolation.

Nothing Ear: an in-ear seal and electronic noise control

Nothing Ear is the conventional in-ear option. Its eartips sit in the ear canal, and Nothing lists in-ear detection alongside smart or adaptive active noise cancellation. The seal gives the earbuds a physical way to reduce some external sound; ANC then uses the earbuds’ electronics to counter suitable environmental noise.

Nothing lists ANC performance of up to 45 dB. That is a manufacturer specification, not a promise that every listener or every frequency will experience a 45 dB reduction. ANC generally behaves differently with steady low-frequency noise than with voices or sudden sounds, and the result depends on seal and fit.

Noise control and awareness: decide where you will listen

Pick the open model for awareness-first situations

  • Walking or exercising where hearing nearby activity is important.
  • Working in a shared space while remaining available for conversation.
  • Listening at home without fully disconnecting from family or other activity.
  • Any routine in which you do not want an in-ear seal.

Nothing’s own description says Ear (open) is for times when the background matters as much as the music. That is the product’s intended use, not an independently measured safety or awareness result. You should still keep volume moderate and pay attention to hazards; an open earbud does not make every activity safe.

Pick Nothing Ear for concentration and reduced outside sound

  • Commuting when you want to soften engine or roadway noise.
  • Focused work, study or travel in a noisy environment.
  • Listening to detail that can be masked by conversations or machinery.
  • Users who prefer a sealed, traditional earbud fit and a transparency option when they need outside sound temporarily.

Transparency mode gives Nothing Ear a way to bring environmental audio back electronically, but it remains an in-ear product. It is not the same physical experience as leaving the ear canal open.

Battery life: read the mode and test conditions

Both products advertise maximum laboratory figures, so the totals should not be treated as a controlled head-to-head test. Nothing Ear’s result changes substantially with ANC or transparency enabled, while Ear (open)’s supplied figure is not broken out by an equivalent ANC-mode comparison. Actual runtime varies with volume, codec, calls, temperature, feature settings and battery age.

Model and mode Earbuds only With charging case
Nothing Ear (open), music Up to 8 hours Up to 30 hours
Nothing Ear, ANC off Up to 8.5 hours Up to 40.5 hours
Nothing Ear, ANC on or transparency Up to 5.2 hours Up to 24 hours

Nothing’s support figures for Ear (open) were tested with fully charged earbuds and case, AAC playback, 50% volume, default features and a 25°C laboratory environment. The Nothing Ear figures use the same stated 25°C, fully charged, AAC, 50% volume and default-feature conditions. These are “up to” claims, not guaranteed minimum runtimes.

What the numbers mean for a buying decision

If you leave ANC off, Nothing Ear has the higher stated maximum: 8.5 hours per charge and 40.5 hours including the case. If you use ANC or transparency, its stated maximum falls to 5.2 and 24 hours. Ear (open) is listed at 8 hours and 30 hours without a comparable mode split. Therefore, choose based on your normal listening mode rather than comparing 30 and 40.5 hours as if they were measured under identical feature settings.

Audio hardware and listening features

What Nothing Ear specifies

Nothing lists an 11 mm ceramic driver for Nothing Ear. It also lists LDAC and LHDC 5.0 codecs, an advanced equaliser and a personal sound profile. Those features provide more ways to configure playback and, with compatible source hardware and settings, can support higher-bandwidth Bluetooth modes.

Nothing also publishes the up-to-45 dB ANC figure for this model. The specification describes capability; it does not establish that Nothing Ear will sound better than Ear (open) to every listener. Open-ear playback and in-ear playback deliver sound differently, and personal preference, fit and the surrounding environment can dominate the result.

What is established for Ear (open)

The supplied product information establishes Ear (open)’s open sound approach, lightweight form and silicone hook. It does not provide a comparable driver, codec or equaliser specification in the material available here. Do not infer that an unlisted feature is absent; simply treat it as not stated when comparing the two published specification sets.

Fit and comfort: match the physical design to your ears

Comfort is one of the areas for which no independent comparative result is available. Ear (open)’s hook avoids inserting a sealed tip into the canal, but the hook’s contact and stability will vary with ear shape, glasses, hair and movement. Nothing Ear’s eartips create a conventional in-ear seal; some listeners prefer that stability, while others dislike canal pressure or the sensation of occlusion.

Questions to ask before choosing Ear (open)

  • Do you want to hear nearby people and environmental sounds continuously?
  • Will a hook resting around the ear interfere with glasses, helmets or other equipment?
  • Are you comfortable accepting less isolation in exchange for an unsealed ear?
  • Will your typical activity involve movement that could challenge the hook’s stability?

Questions to ask before choosing Nothing Ear

  • Can you wear in-ear tips comfortably for several hours?
  • Do you need ANC for transport, offices or other steady background noise?
  • Will you switch between isolation and transparency during the day?
  • Does your phone or player support the codecs you intend to use?

Neither set of questions predicts a universal winner. If possible, use the retailer’s return policy to verify fit, because comfort cannot be established from the specifications alone.

Durability and water exposure

Both products’ earbuds carry an IP54 rating under IEC 60529. The EU Nothing Ear product page also lists an IP55 rating for its charging case. These ratings describe specified resistance conditions; they do not make either product waterproof.

Nothing warns that resistance can decline over time and advises against showering, bathing or swimming with the earbuds. If the earbuds become wet, dry them completely before using them again or putting them into the case. Moisture in the charging contacts or case can create a separate charging and reliability problem, so do not treat the rating as permission to store wet earbuds.

Price, stock and regional availability

At the time the official pages were accessed, the US Ear (open) page displayed a price of $99 and marked the product sold out. An EU Nothing Ear page displayed €129. These observations apply to those specific regional pages and dates; they are not a universal current price and cannot be used as a direct currency-adjusted comparison.

Before buying, select your country on Nothing’s site and verify that the exact model is in stock, that the seller is authorised, and that the return and warranty terms apply to your region. The available information does not establish marketplace inventory or any affiliate purchasing arrangement.

Which Nothing earbuds should you buy?

Choose Nothing Ear (open) when these priorities come first

  1. Environmental awareness: You need background audio to remain naturally audible rather than relying on a transparency mode.
  2. An unsealed fit: You prefer a hook-supported design over an eartip in the canal.
  3. Open listening at work or home: You want music without feeling cut off from conversations and activity.
  4. Consistent stated endurance: The published music figure is up to 8 hours on the earbuds and up to 30 hours with the case under Nothing’s specified test conditions.

Choose Nothing Ear when these priorities come first

  1. Noise reduction: You want smart or adaptive ANC, with Nothing’s published capability of up to 45 dB.
  2. In-ear stability: You prefer a sealed earbud and in-ear detection.
  3. Audio configuration: You want the listed 11 mm ceramic driver, LDAC, LHDC 5.0, advanced equaliser and personal sound profile.
  4. Maximum case runtime with ANC off: Nothing lists up to 8.5 hours from the earbuds and 40.5 hours including the case when ANC is off.

Use this tie-breaker if your needs conflict

When you need both awareness and isolation at different times, Nothing Ear offers ANC and transparency modes but still uses an in-ear seal. When you almost always need awareness and rarely need isolation, Ear (open)’s physical design avoids having to manage an electronic transparency mode. When comfort is the deciding factor, specifications cannot settle the choice; fit testing and a practical return option matter more than a feature checklist.

Buying and setup checklist

  1. Confirm the model name: Ear (open) and Ear are different wearing designs, not two versions of the same earbud.
  2. Check regional stock and currency: The observed $99 and €129 prices came from different regional pages and are not directly comparable.
  3. Plan your listening mode: For Nothing Ear, estimate battery needs with ANC or transparency on if that is how you normally listen.
  4. Check source compatibility: LDAC and LHDC 5.0 only matter when your playback device and settings support them.
  5. Test fit safely: Verify that the hook or eartips remain secure during your normal movement without raising volume to overcome discomfort or outside noise.
  6. Protect the rating: Keep both earbuds away from showers, baths and swimming, and dry them fully before charging or storage.
  7. Keep purchase records: Regional warranty and return rights depend on the seller and country.

What the specifications do not prove

The published information does not provide independent comparative measurements for sound quality, comfort, call quality or real-world battery life. It also does not establish that one design is safer in every activity, that the open model delivers a particular awareness improvement, or that the in-ear model’s ANC will achieve the same reduction for every user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manufacturer battery figures and ANC claims are useful for understanding intended capability, but they are not population statistics or independent laboratory comparisons. Treat the specifications as decision inputs, then weigh your own environment, fit preference and listening habits.

Match the earbuds to a typical day

Think through where each listening session happens rather than choosing from one headline specification. A person who moves between a quiet desk and conversations may value Ear (open)’s continuous background audibility. Someone who spends a train ride or flight trying to reduce steady mechanical noise may value Nothing Ear’s seal and ANC. If the same day includes both situations, Nothing Ear’s transparency mode offers a switchable compromise, although it still feels like an in-ear device.

For exercise or walking, the open model’s hook and unsealed design may better match the goal of hearing nearby activity, but stability remains personal and should be checked with the retailer’s return terms. For long desk sessions, compare the physical sensation of a hook against the pressure and occlusion of eartips. Neither product’s published specifications can predict which contact points your ears will tolerate.

How to interpret the ANC and codec claims

The “up to 45 dB” ANC figure should be read as a capability claim under Nothing’s stated conditions, not as a uniform reduction across all sound. A good seal is part of the result, and fit, frequency and surroundings affect what you hear. Voices, sudden sounds and irregular office noise may remain more noticeable than steady low-frequency sound.

LDAC and LHDC 5.0 are useful only when the playback device, operating system and selected settings support them. If your source uses another codec, the presence of those options does not change the connection automatically. The advanced equaliser and personal sound profile are configuration tools, not proof of a preferred tuning. Ear (open)’s comparable driver and codec details are not stated in the product information considered here, so avoid assuming parity or inferiority from that omission.

Battery planning without overpromising

An eight-hour claim can cover a nominal workday only when playback resembles Nothing’s test: AAC, 50% volume, default features, a fully charged system and 25°C. Calls, higher volume, different codecs and feature use can shorten actual time. For Nothing Ear, decide whether ANC or transparency will normally remain on; the stated earbuds-only figure changes from 8.5 hours with ANC off to 5.2 hours with ANC or transparency enabled.

The case totals describe repeated recharges, not one uninterrupted session. Ear (open) is listed at up to 30 hours including its case, while Nothing Ear is listed at up to 40.5 hours with ANC off or 24 hours with ANC or transparency. Those figures help with travel planning, but they should not be treated as a controlled comparison because the mode presentation is not equivalent.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing unlike prices: The observed $99 US Ear (open) page and €129 EU Ear page use different markets and currencies.
  • Treating “open” as noise cancellation: Ear (open) is intended to preserve background sound, not isolate it.
  • Assuming transparency equals an open ear: Nothing Ear can pass outside sound electronically, but its eartips still seal the canal.
  • Reading IP54 as waterproof: Nothing advises against showers, bathing and swimming, and moisture should be dried before charging.
  • Using maximum battery figures as guarantees: Volume, calls, temperature, codec, settings and battery age all affect runtime.
  • Buying for codecs you cannot use: LDAC and LHDC 5.0 require compatible source hardware and settings.
  • Assuming a specification proves comfort or sound quality: No independent comparison establishes a winner in those areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nothing Ear (open) better than Nothing Ear for awareness?

Ear (open) is the awareness-first design because its silicone hook supports an unsealed ear and Nothing describes it as letting background sound remain audible. Nothing Ear can use transparency mode, but it remains an in-ear product. Neither option guarantees safety in every activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which has longer battery life?

Nothing Ear has the higher stated maximum with ANC off: up to 8.5 hours from the earbuds and 40.5 hours with the case. With ANC or transparency enabled, its figures fall to 5.2 and 24 hours. Ear (open) is listed at up to 8 and 30 hours. These are laboratory “up to” claims, not a controlled head-to-head test.

Does Nothing Ear (open) have ANC?

The product information describes Ear (open) as using open sound technology and does not present it as noise-isolating. Nothing Ear is the model with smart or adaptive ANC, listed at up to 45 dB, plus transparency mode.

Are both models waterproof?

No. Both earbuds are rated IP54 under IEC 60529. Nothing warns against showering, bathing and swimming, says resistance can decline over time, and recommends drying the earbuds completely before use or storage. The EU page also lists an IP55 rating for the Nothing Ear case.

Which model is better for commuting?

Nothing Ear is the more suitable choice when reducing outside sound is the priority because it combines an in-ear seal with ANC. Ear (open) is more suitable when you need to keep hearing announcements or nearby activity. Your route, fit and volume habits still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do LDAC and LHDC 5.0 guarantee better sound?

No. Nothing lists those codecs for Nothing Ear, along with an 11 mm ceramic driver, advanced equaliser and personal sound profile. They provide configuration and connection options when the source supports them, but they do not establish a universal subjective sound-quality advantage.

Which is more comfortable?

There is no established universal winner. Ear (open)’s hook avoids a sealed canal but may contact differently around each ear and can interact with glasses or helmets. Nothing Ear’s eartips may feel secure to some listeners and uncomfortable to others. A return policy is valuable for fit testing.

Can I compare the $99 and €129 prices directly?

No. Those prices were displayed on different regional official pages, and the US Ear (open) page was marked sold out when accessed. Currency, tax, stock and regional terms differ, so check the official page for your country before buying.

The Bottom Line

Choose Nothing Ear (open) for an unsealed, awareness-first listening experience. Choose Nothing Ear for an in-ear fit, ANC, transparency mode and the longer stated case runtime when ANC is off. Confirm local price and stock, then let your normal environment and fit preference—not a single specification—make the final decision.
