Short answer: Nothing Ear is worth considering if you want distinctive design, useful software controls, Smart ANC and high-resolution codec support at a competitive live price. It is a weaker choice if your priority is the longest possible battery life with noise cancelling enabled or demonstrably class-leading isolation.

This guide covers the flagship Nothing Ear sold through Nothing’s storefront—not Ear (a), Ear (2), Ear (3) or Ear (open). Features and codec support come from Nothing’s official product information, while the battery figures are controlled manufacturer results rather than an independent endurance test.

What Nothing Ear is—and what this guide is evaluating

Nothing Ear is a true-wireless earbud set built around active noise control, app-based customization and a charging case. The purchase decision is not just about a feature checklist. The useful questions are whether the earbuds seal comfortably in your ears, how their ANC behaves around your usual noise, how long they last with ANC enabled, whether your phone can use the headline codec, and what the current regional price is when you buy.

Nothing’s official product page lists a Smart ANC algorithm and LHDC 5.0 codec support: Nothing Ear product page. Those are capabilities, not guarantees of identical results for every listener. Fit, firmware, phone compatibility, music service, volume and the character of the surrounding noise all affect the experience.

Nothing Ear features that matter in daily use

Smart ANC

Smart ANC is designed to adapt noise reduction rather than applying one fixed level in every situation. In practice, its value depends on the ear-tip seal, the fit of each bud, the frequency of the noise and the firmware version. A good seal blocks some sound passively before ANC works; a poor seal can make bass leak out, let outside noise in and leave the algorithm with less to work with.

Expect the biggest benefit against steady, low-frequency sound such as an aircraft or train engine. Voices, sudden sounds and irregular clatter are harder for any earbud system to remove completely. Wind can also create turbulence around the microphones, so outdoor results may differ from indoor results. Smart ANC should therefore be judged as a way to reduce distracting noise, not as a promise of silence.

Transparency mode

Transparency mode uses the microphones to bring outside sound into the earbuds. Its usefulness depends on how natural voices and environmental sounds feel, whether there is audible hiss, and how quickly you can switch modes. Test it while speaking to someone, crossing a street and listening for announcements. A mode that sounds slightly processed but remains intelligible can be more practical than one that is technically loud but fatiguing.

LHDC 5.0

LHDC 5.0 is a high-resolution Bluetooth codec option. It is mainly valuable when all three parts of the chain support it: your phone, the Nothing software and the service or files you play. Many devices will fall back to another codec, and the audible difference depends on the recording, the headphones’ tuning and your listening environment. Check your phone’s codec menu and manufacturer documentation before paying extra for LHDC as a deciding feature.

Microsoft Swift Pair, LED charging status, Pinch controls, Find My Earbuds, Water resistance IP54 buds / IP55 case, Google Fast Pair, Ear Tip Fit Test supported.

App controls and equalization

Nothing Ear’s software features are part of its value proposition. Before buying, check that the companion app is available for your phone’s operating system and that it exposes the controls you actually use, such as ANC or transparency switching, gesture mapping and equalizer adjustments. A flexible EQ can correct a tonal preference, but it cannot fix a loose seal, microphone wind noise or a battery that no longer meets your routine.

Battery life: the number you can plan around

Nothing’s support documentation states: “ANC ON/Transparency Mode: 4 hours buds only, 18 hours buds + case.” The figures are manufacturer laboratory results. Nothing says the test used fully charged earbuds and case, AAC playback at 50% volume, a temperature of 25°C and default settings: Nothing Support battery documentation.

Configuration Published runtime How to interpret it
Earbuds with ANC or Transparency Mode 4 hours Nothing’s controlled buds-only result.
Earbuds plus charging case with ANC or Transparency Mode 18 hours Combined result under the same laboratory assumptions.
Higher volume, demanding codec or extra features Not stated Real runtime can be lower; no independent percentage adjustment is established.

Use four hours as a planning baseline for an ANC listening block, not a promise that every session will reach it. Higher volume, LHDC or other demanding connectivity, frequent calls, temperature extremes and additional processing can reduce runtime. If your commute, workday or flight regularly exceeds four hours away from a case, carry the case and plan a charging opportunity rather than assuming the buds will last all day with ANC on.

What the case-inclusive figure does—and does not—mean

The 18-hour figure includes the energy stored in the case and is not 18 hours from one charge of the earbuds. The case extends listening across multiple top-ups. Your practical pattern will depend on how often you remove the buds, whether both buds are used evenly and how much time they spend in calls. The documentation does not establish a separate independent runtime for calls, high-volume playback or LHDC, so do not convert the published figure into those scenarios.

Battery-health expectations

No independent published statistic establishes a precise failure rate or long-term battery-degradation percentage for Nothing Ear. As with other small lithium-ion cells, capacity gradually declines with use, but the available evidence does not support a specific service-life prediction. Keep the case and contacts clean, avoid leaving the set in high heat and use the supplied charging equipment or a compatible charger.

How good is the ANC?

The available evidence confirms that Nothing Ear includes Smart ANC; it does not establish category-leading isolation. Judge it against the sounds you actually need to reduce.

Environment What to listen for Decision signal
Train, subway or aircraft Low-frequency engine and rail rumble; comfort when pressure changes. Choose it if the rumble becomes less intrusive without creating an unpleasant pressure sensation.
Office or café Voices, keyboards, dishes and intermittent movement. ANC may reduce the background bed, but voices can remain audible; compare with transparency for conversations.
Windy street Microphone turbulence, thumping or hiss. Reject a pair that produces distracting wind artifacts during your normal outdoor use.
Quiet room Hiss and tonal changes when ANC is switched on. A quieter room should not become more fatiguing because of audible processing noise.

Fit is part of ANC performance

Try every supplied ear-tip size. The correct tip seals the canal without painful pressure and keeps the bud stable when you walk or speak. A tip that is too small leaks bass and outside sound; one that is too large may feel sore and still fail to seal if the bud cannot sit correctly. Test left and right ears separately because they may need different sizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Play a familiar bass-rich track, then switch ANC on and off while gently pressing each bud into place. If bass suddenly becomes fuller when you press it in, the problem is probably the seal rather than the ANC algorithm. This simple check is more useful than judging isolation with a loose fit.

Sound, codecs and calls

Sound quality

Sound quality is a combination of driver tuning, seal, source quality and codec. LHDC 5.0 can preserve more source information on a compatible Android setup, but it does not automatically make every recording sound better. Start with a reliable fit, disable any processing you do not want, then compare the available EQ settings using familiar tracks. Make changes one at a time so you know whether a difference comes from the seal, EQ or codec.

Phone and service compatibility

Before relying on LHDC, verify that your phone exposes LHDC 5.0 and that the setting remains active during playback. Some phones revert to another codec for stability, battery or compatibility reasons. If your device cannot use LHDC, Nothing Ear can still function as Bluetooth earbuds; the codec simply should not be counted as a benefit you will receive.

Call quality

Call performance should be tested separately from music. Make a call indoors, then repeat it outdoors near traffic or wind. Ask the other person whether your voice remains clear when you turn your head and whether background noise is being suppressed too aggressively. The supplied evidence does not provide an independent call-quality score, so treat your own test and the return policy as more reliable than a feature label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price and value: use the live regional listing

There is no stable cross-market price in the available product information, so a universal dollar or pound figure would be misleading. Check the Nothing storefront or an authorized seller in your country on the day you buy, including tax, delivery, stock status and return terms. A temporary discount can change the value calculation, while a higher local price may put competing earbuds with longer ANC endurance in reach.

Compare the price with the features you will use, not with every item on the specification sheet:

  • Paying for design and software: Nothing Ear makes the strongest case when its styling, app controls, Smart ANC and codec support match your priorities.
  • Paying for endurance: Four hours with ANC is workable for many commutes but is not a class-leading claim. Buyers who need marathon listening should weigh the ANC-on figure heavily.
  • Paying for isolation: No published evidence here proves best-in-class noise reduction. Evaluate the seal and your own transit and voice tests.
  • Paying for high-resolution playback: LHDC matters only if your phone and listening setup support it.

Comparison framework for alternatives

If you are comparing Nothing Ear with another true-wireless set, score both products on the same real-world criteria. Do not let a newer model’s specifications migrate into this product’s listing.

Criterion Questions to answer Nothing Ear evidence available
ANC on transit How much steady rumble is reduced, and is the result comfortable? Smart ANC is officially listed; category-leading isolation is not established.
ANC-on battery How long do the buds last before returning to the case? 4 hours buds only and 18 hours including the case, under Nothing’s stated laboratory conditions.
Sound and codec Does the tuning suit you, and can your phone use the advertised codec? LHDC 5.0 is listed; personal tuning and device compatibility still need checking.
Comfort and seal Do the tips stay sealed without pain during movement? Must be confirmed by your ears and the seller’s return policy.
Calls Can callers understand you indoors and in wind? No independent call-quality statistic is supplied.
App controls Can you remap gestures, change modes and adjust EQ? Check the current companion-app feature set for your phone.
Charging Does the charging method fit your desk, travel and case routine? Confirm the current regional listing for included and supported charging features.
Water resistance and warranty Are the rating and warranty terms suitable for your use and country? Verify the exact regional product and warranty documentation before purchase.
Street price What will you actually pay today, including tax and delivery? Live regional price is required; no universal figure is established.

Avoid mixing up generations

Specifications from a newer product should not be used to describe the 2024 Nothing Ear. For example, a later Nothing Ear (3) review discusses Bluetooth 5.4, LDAC and solid ANC, while also criticizing its battery life; those observations belong to that later model, not automatically to Nothing Ear. See the separate context at TechRadar’s Nothing Ear (3) review only when you are researching that model.

Buying and setup checklist

  1. Confirm the model. Make sure the listing says Nothing Ear and not Ear (a), Ear (2), Ear (3) or Ear (open).
  2. Check the local transaction. Record the current price, tax, delivery estimate, stock status, warranty provider and return window.
  3. Verify phone support. Install the companion app, check operating-system requirements and confirm whether your phone supports LHDC 5.0.
  4. Fit both ears. Try each supplied tip size, walk and speak, then check whether bass and outside noise change when you press the buds inward.
  5. Update before judging. Complete firmware and app updates, then restart the earbuds and phone if controls or codec options do not appear.
  6. Set your baseline. Listen to familiar tracks at a comfortable volume with ANC, transparency and normal mode. Save the EQ and gesture settings you prefer.
  7. Test your environments. Use a transit-like low-frequency noise, a voice-filled room and a windy outdoor route. Check both isolation and transparency naturalness.
  8. Measure your routine. Note the battery percentage after a typical ANC session rather than comparing your result directly with the laboratory maximum.
  9. Test calls. Ask a contact to evaluate your voice indoors and outdoors before the return window closes.

Troubleshooting common disappointments

ANC seems weak

  • Reseat the buds and try a different tip size on each ear.
  • Clean the earbud and microphone openings according to the care instructions; debris can affect the seal and microphones.
  • Compare the same sound with ANC on and off in a steady-noise environment.
  • Install available firmware updates and retest.
  • If voices remain audible, remember that ANC is generally less effective against speech and irregular sounds than steady low-frequency noise.

Battery falls short of four hours

  • Check volume, codec selection, call time and whether extra processing is enabled.
  • Confirm both buds and the case reached a full charge and that the charging contacts are clean.
  • Repeat the test near the published conditions—AAC, 50% volume, 25°C and default settings—without presenting your result as a laboratory measurement.
  • If a fully charged bud shuts down unusually early across repeated tests, document the behavior and use the seller’s warranty or return process.

LHDC is unavailable

  • Confirm that the phone supports LHDC 5.0 and that the option is enabled in its Bluetooth developer or device settings.
  • Check whether the current app or firmware supports the setting.
  • Test with locally stored or known-compatible content; the streaming service may choose another codec.
  • If your phone cannot use LHDC, decide on the earbuds’ sound and other features without counting that codec as a benefit.

Transparency sounds unnatural

  • Try a different ear-tip seal and adjust the mode level if the app provides that control.
  • Listen for hiss in a quiet room and for voice intelligibility outdoors.
  • Use normal mode or remove one earbud for short conversations if transparency remains distracting.

Who should buy Nothing Ear?

It is a sensible choice when

  • You like Nothing’s design and want a feature-rich true-wireless set.
  • Your phone and services can use LHDC 5.0, or you value the other software features regardless of codec.
  • Your ANC sessions fit within roughly four hours before a case top-up.
  • You can verify a competitive current price in your region and have a practical return option to check the fit.

Look elsewhere when

  • You need the longest possible ANC-on runtime from a single charge.
  • You require independently demonstrated, class-leading isolation rather than an officially listed ANC system.
  • Your phone cannot use LHDC and you are buying primarily for that codec.
  • You cannot try different tips or return the earbuds if the seal, comfort or call performance does not suit you.

Verdict

Are the Nothing Ear features, battery and ANC worth the price? They can be, provided the live regional price is competitive and your priorities align with the product’s strengths. Smart ANC, transparency, app control and LHDC 5.0 create a compelling feature set, while the published 4-hour ANC earbud and 18-hour case-inclusive figures give you a clear planning baseline. The trade-off is that those are controlled manufacturer results, and the available evidence does not prove leading isolation or exceptional endurance. Buy after checking your phone’s codec support, testing the ear-tip seal and confirming that the return and warranty terms protect you.
