The complaint is about the case supplied with Nothing Headphone (1) Pro, not the headphones’ sound: it protects the ear cups but leaves the headband exposed, and its rigid shell reportedly makes charging and cable storage awkward. That echoes the much-criticized exposed-headband approach of Apple’s AirPods Max Smart Case, while adding bulk, according to SoundGuys writer Adam Birney. Birney’s September 30, 2026 account is an opinion based on the writer’s experience, not an independent test of either case.
What is wrong with the Nothing Headphone (1) Pro case?
SoundGuys describes a clamped hard-shell case that covers the ear cups but leaves the headband exposed. That is the central resemblance to Apple’s AirPods Max Smart Case—and the point of the criticism: the parts of the headphones that remain outside the shell are still vulnerable to rubbing and snagging in a bag.

Birney also calls the case bulky and rigid. Because the headphones do not fold, the case cannot become more compact by folding them down for storage. The article characterizes the case as taking up as much bag space as a full-size one; that is a qualitative comparison, not a measured volume.
Why charging and cable storage are the practical problems
Charging means taking the headphones out
According to Birney, the closed case covers the charging port. If that account matches your unit, charging while the headphones are packed away is not possible: you must remove them from the case to connect USB-C. This is the most consequential design trade-off for someone who wants to charge headphones overnight or between trips without unpacking them.

The included cables have nowhere to go
Nothing’s UK product page lists a USB-C cable and a 3.5 mm audio cable in the box, alongside the hard-shell case. Birney’s criticism is not that the cables are missing, but that the case has no dedicated storage space for them. Loose cables can therefore need their own pocket or pouch. Nothing’s product listing describes the case as hard shell with protective TPU lining and strap loops.
Is the case at least protective?
It offers a shell around the ear cups, and Nothing describes a TPU-lined hard-shell design. But the coverage is incomplete as Birney describes it: the exposed headband does not receive the same enclosure. Whether that matters depends on how you carry the headphones. A bag with a separate, protected headphone compartment may make the exposed section less concerning than a crowded backpack where straps, zippers, or other objects can rub against it.

The case’s rigidity also cuts both ways. A hard shell can help shield the cups from pressure, but its fixed shape and the non-folding headphones make the package less adaptable to tight spaces. The source does not provide drop, crush, or abrasion testing, so it does not establish a quantified level of protection.
What to do if you already own the headphones
- For charging: take the headphones out of the case before connecting USB-C, as the SoundGuys account says the case blocks access to the port.
- For cable storage: carry the supplied USB-C and 3.5 mm cables in a separate pouch or pocket if you want them with the headphones.
- For more complete coverage: consider a third-party hard case that fully closes and has room for cables. Birney recommends that general type of solution, but does not identify or test a specific compatible case. Confirm that a candidate fits Headphone (1) Pro and closes properly before relying on it for protection.
Birney puts the recommendation this way: “The fix I’ve recommended to AirPods Max owners for years is a third-party hard case that fully closes and has room for your cables.” This is a general editorial recommendation, not a product endorsement or compatibility guarantee.

Price and alternatives: what the sources establish
SoundGuys reports a US MSRP of $399 for Nothing Headphone (1) Pro. Nothing’s UK product page lists £349. Those are different market-specific reference prices from separate sources, not directly comparable current checkout prices; verify local price and availability before buying.
Birney names the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) as alternatives that fold into their cases. That is the article’s comparison, not an independently verified, complete comparison of those models’ case materials, coverage, or cable storage.
Who should care about this case design?
- Frequent travelers: pay attention to the exposed headband and fixed bulk if your headphones share a tightly packed bag.
- People who charge while packed: the reported blocked port makes this case inconvenient for that routine.
- People who carry cables: plan for separate cable storage, even though both USB-C and 3.5 mm cables are included.
- People who mostly store headphones at home: the case may be less troublesome if charging access and compact packing are not priorities.
Nothing’s support page confirms USB-C audio and 3.5 mm Aux-In wired audio support and says replacement ear cushions can be purchased through official support. Those details may matter for ownership, but they do not resolve the case’s coverage, charging-access, or storage limitations. Nothing support.
