Could wired earbuds be better for calls?
If you are comfortable with a cable, Apple EarPods with USB-C are worth considering as a call-first comparison—not as a wireless pick. SoundGuys and RTINGS note that the inline microphone sits closer to your mouth than a microphone built into a wireless earbud, which can be useful for voice pickup. Confirm that your phone or other device supports USB-C audio before buying; connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.

What matters most when choosing call earbuds?
- Voice pickup is not the same as ANC. The microphone determines what people on the other end hear. Active noise cancellation and isolation primarily reduce background sound for you, the wearer. A strong score for one does not automatically mean strong performance for the other.
- Match noise testing to your surroundings. Quiet rooms, steady background noise, wind, and sudden loud sounds challenge microphones differently. A model that handles steady noise well may still struggle with a passing train or gusts.
- Check the devices you actually use. Multipoint and multi-device pairing can behave differently across phones and computers. A feature listed for multiple connections does not prove that every laptop setup will switch reliably.
- Compare battery life with ANC on. If you take long calls, the ANC-enabled figure is more relevant than a longer playback claim measured under different conditions.
- Prioritize fit for long sessions. A comfortable, stable earbud is easier to keep positioned through extended calls; fit varies from person to person.
Do owners agree on one best model?
The available owner comments do not establish a broad consensus. In a Reddit thread from around 2024, one Android user wrote, “I am an android user and refuse to get Air Pods! I need another suggestion. (Best mic)” and later said they chose to try Pixel Buds Pro based on their phone and videos they had watched. What about Apple earbuds if you use an iPhone?
Apple AirPods 4 are a useful point of context, not a recommendation here.
