Yes—Norton 360 includes ransomware protection, but it is a defensive layer, not a guarantee that every attack will be detected or stopped. Norton’s Windows documentation describes ordinary threat scans alongside a separate Ransomware Protection feature designed to help stop ransomware from modifying, deleting, or encrypting personal files. Norton also documents an Android Ransomware Recovery feature, while iOS has a different feature set.
What you actually see depends on your operating system, Norton app version, and subscription. Norton has also renamed its former “Data Protection” feature to “Ransomware Protection” in the updated app, so an older installation may use different wording.

What Norton 360 checks for on Windows
Norton describes Windows protection as several layers rather than one “ransomware scan.” The product can scan for threats generally, provide antivirus protection, and use a named Ransomware Protection feature focused on personal files. That feature is intended to help protect photos, documents, and other files against ransomware actions such as unauthorized modification, deletion, or encryption. See Norton’s Windows security overview for the feature description: Norton 360 device-security support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Protection layer | What Norton documents | What it means for ransomware |
|---|---|---|
| Threat scans | Scans for security threats on the Windows device. | Can look for malicious files or activity, but Norton does not publish a universal detection percentage in the cited documentation. |
| Antivirus protection | General malware protection is part of the Windows security product. | Ransomware is one type of malware; antivirus is broader than a ransomware-only check. |
| Ransomware Protection | A distinct feature intended to protect personal files from being modified, deleted, or encrypted by ransomware. | Adds a file-protection layer aimed at the damage ransomware tries to cause. |
These descriptions explain Norton’s intended protection, not a promise of perfect prevention. The support material does not establish an independent test score, a guaranteed detection rate, or immunity from new ransomware variants. Keep the app updated and treat the feature as one part of a wider security and backup plan.

Why the name may look different
Norton’s updated app notice says the feature previously called Data Protection is now called Ransomware Protection. If you are following an older guide, the old name may still appear in screenshots or menus. The renamed feature does not mean that every version exposes exactly the same controls; Norton also warns that feature availability varies by platform and plan. The naming notice is available from Norton’s updated-app support page.
Does a threat scan equal ransomware protection?
No. A general scan and the dedicated file-protection feature address different parts of the problem. A scan looks for threats that Norton can identify on the device. Ransomware Protection is described in terms of preventing hostile changes to important files. A clean scan therefore does not prove that every file is safe, and having the file-protection feature does not mean every malicious program will be identified before it runs.
Ransomware attacks can involve more than an executable file: a malicious document, compromised account, stolen credentials, or a vulnerability can be the entry point. Norton’s documentation does not provide a complete attack-path analysis, so do not interpret the product label as a guarantee against every route an attacker might use. The practical goal is layered risk reduction: keep the security product active, limit unnecessary software access, install operating-system updates, and maintain recoverable backups.

How to check whether your Windows copy has the feature
Because Norton changes screens and entitlements by plan and app version, use the following as a verification process rather than assuming that every installation has identical menus.
- Confirm the device and subscription. Sign in to the Norton account associated with the installation and check that the subscription covers the Windows device. Norton says that features differ by plan and platform, so a product name alone is not enough to establish entitlement.
- Update the Norton app. Install available product updates, then reopen the main security window. An updated installation is more likely to use the current Ransomware Protection label instead of Data Protection.
- Look for the ransomware-specific control. In the Windows security app, inspect the protection or security settings for Ransomware Protection. On an older build, look for Data Protection. If neither appears, consult Norton’s support page for your exact product and version rather than assuming the feature is active.
- Run the available threat scan. Start the scan offered by your Norton installation and allow it to finish. A scan result reports what that scan found; it is not a certification that future ransomware cannot run.
- Check that your important folders are covered. The file-protection feature is described as protecting personal files, but the cited material does not provide one universal folder list for every edition. Review the controls shown in your own app and make sure your photos, documents, project files, and other irreplaceable data are included where the product permits.
- Verify backup separately. A ransomware-protection switch and a backup job solve different problems. Open Norton’s backup settings and confirm that the files you would need after an incident are actually selected and that a recent backup completed.
Do not disable protection or create a deliberately malicious test file merely to see whether the feature reacts. Use Norton’s documented status indicators and support instructions; an unsafe test can damage data or trigger a real security incident.
Android and iOS do not have the same feature list
Norton’s mobile documentation distinguishes Android from iOS. The Android app can include Ransomware Recovery, a feature Norton describes as scanning apps for screen-lock ransomware and crypto-ransomware that encrypts files. Norton states that availability depends on the subscription. The mobile feature page is at Norton’s mobile-feature support article.

Ransomware protection is not the same as backup
Norton Cloud Backup is a recovery measure, not a ransomware detector. Norton’s setup documentation explains how to select files and folders for cloud backup and how to create local backups. If ransomware damages the originals, a backup made before the attack can give you a clean copy to restore. That does not mean the backup service itself blocked or identified the ransomware.
Norton also documents local backup destinations, including an external hard drive or USB storage. Local backups require user intervention; they do not run automatically according to Norton’s support instructions. A drive left connected and writable all the time can be exposed to the same incident as the computer, so use a schedule and storage arrangement that gives you a version you can recover independently.

| Backup option | How Norton describes it | Operational point |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Backup | Select files and folders for backup to Norton’s cloud service. | Useful for restoring files that were backed up before the incident; it is separate from detection and prevention. |
| Local backup | Back up to a local destination such as USB storage or an external drive. | Norton says local backups require user intervention rather than running automatically. |
Read the setup guidance at Norton Cloud Backup setup. For restoration, Norton explains how to restore an entire backup set or selected files in its backup-restore instructions.
What a usable backup should contain
- Documents, photographs, videos, source code, tax records, and other files that cannot be replaced easily.
- A recent completion time, not merely an enabled backup switch.
- More than one recovery path when the data is critical, such as a cloud copy and a removable local copy.
- A restore process you have reviewed before an emergency. A backup that cannot be opened or restored is not a dependable recovery plan.
What to do if ransomware is suspected
Norton’s documentation establishes scanning, file protection, and restoration features, but it does not promise that Norton 360 will remove every infection or decrypt every locked file. If you see a ransom message, files changing unexpectedly, or widespread unreadable documents, prioritize containment and preservation of evidence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Disconnect the affected computer from networks. Unplug wired networking and disable Wi-Fi to reduce the chance of the incident spreading through connected services. Do not reconnect simply to test whether files are still changing.
- Do not delete the encrypted files. Keep copies of ransom notes and affected files if possible. They may be needed by an incident-response specialist, law enforcement, or a future recovery tool.
- Use a separate, trusted device to contact support. If the affected computer cannot be trusted, use another device to reach Norton Support or your organization’s IT team.
- Run Norton’s available scan only when it is safe to do so. Follow the product’s remediation instructions and record what it reports. A scan result should not be treated as proof that every compromised account or file has been repaired.
- Restore from a known-good backup after containment. Use Norton’s restore procedure for files that were backed up before the incident. Restoring while malware is still active can re-expose clean files.
- Change credentials from a clean device. Prioritize email, cloud-storage, banking, and administrator accounts, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
Paying a ransom does not guarantee decryption or that stolen data will be deleted. For a business, school, or shared network, involve the organization’s incident-response team before wiping machines or restoring broadly.

Can Norton 360 remove ransomware?
Norton documents threat scans and protection against ransomware behavior, but the cited support pages do not promise universal removal, decryption, or recovery after every attack. “Protects against ransomware” should therefore be read as prevention and detection assistance, not as a guarantee that an already-compromised computer will be cleaned or that encrypted files will become readable.
If Norton identifies a malicious file, follow the action it presents—such as quarantine or removal—and then investigate accounts, backups, and other devices. If files remain encrypted, the practical recovery path is a clean backup or specialist assistance; the Norton documentation does not claim that the product can decrypt every ransomware family.
How plan and platform differences affect the answer
There is no single feature matrix that applies to every Norton 360 customer. Norton explicitly says that features vary by subscription and platform. Two people using the same product-family name may therefore see different controls because one is on Windows and the other on Android, or because their plans include different entitlements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Check the exact plan: compare the subscription shown in your Norton account with the feature list for that plan.
- Check the operating system: Windows Ransomware Protection, Android Ransomware Recovery, and iOS features should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Check the app version: the Data Protection-to-Ransomware Protection rename can make older instructions look different from the current interface.
- Check the backup status: having Norton 360 installed does not prove that Cloud Backup is configured or that a local backup has run recently.
What the available documentation does—and does not—establish
Norton’s own support pages establish that the Windows product includes a ransomware-focused protection feature, that Android may provide Ransomware Recovery, and that backup and restore tools are available under the documented conditions. They do not establish an independent benchmark, a percentage of ransomware samples blocked, or a guarantee of perfect detection. Those distinctions matter when deciding how much additional protection your files need.
Use Norton 360 as one layer: keep its protections enabled, update the operating system and applications, limit administrator access, use multifactor authentication, and maintain backups that you can actually restore. The combination reduces both the likelihood of a successful attack and the damage if prevention fails.
