Northwell Health and Connecticut State Community College (CT State) announced a partnership to develop healthcare career pathways, beginning at Norwalk and Danbury hospitals. The plan combines scholarship fundraising, hands-on learning, instructional space and connections to Northwell recruiters. It is intended to help students enter healthcare work and help current Northwell employees pursue credentials and career advancement—but the partners have not yet published application details, a program start date or hiring commitments.
What the partnership is—and where it starts
Announced on August 10, 2026, by Northwell Health and CT State, the initiative is a healthcare workforce partnership between a health system and a community college. The CT State release was updated September 24, 2026. Its initial sites are Norwalk and Danbury hospitals; the announcement describes the effort as a model that could potentially expand across Northwell, not as a statewide rollout already in place.

The title’s reference to a university is imprecise: the college named in the announcement is Connecticut State Community College, not a university. The release does not give a start date for participant programming.

The partners describe a set of connections between education and an employer. The announced components are joint fundraising for scholarships, plans to develop co-branded instructional space, expanded access to hands-on training at Northwell facilities, and links to recruiters, career fairs and other career opportunities. In principle, these could make training more accessible and help learners connect classroom preparation with a large healthcare employer. The release does not specify how each component will operate or when it will become available.

For CT State students
Students may gain access to additional learning and hands-on training at Northwell facilities, alongside career connections such as recruiters and career fairs. Scholarship fundraising is intended to reduce financial barriers. The announcement does not state scholarship amounts, eligibility, application steps, the number of awards or which courses and credentials will qualify.
For current Northwell employees
The partnership is also intended to give Northwell employees pathways to additional credentials and career advancement. The release does not identify eligible employee groups, specific credential programs, advancement criteria or whether participation will take place during paid work time.

Which healthcare fields are named?
The announcement identifies both clinical and nonclinical areas: nursing, medical assisting, allied health, billing and coding, and other workforce-aligned roles. These examples signal the breadth of the intended pathways; they are not a complete course catalog, a confirmed list of programs launching at the two hospitals or a promise of employment.

Northwell’s organizational scale helps explain why the health system is a substantial potential employer partner, but it is not evidence of the initiative’s results. In the CT State release updated September 24, 2026, Northwell reported 28 hospitals, more than 1,000 outpatient facilities, 22,000 nurses, more than 20,000 physicians and more than 106,000 employees.

How it fits into Connecticut’s workforce efforts
Connecticut has other examples of education-employer partnerships, though they should not be treated as direct comparisons of effectiveness. The Connecticut Office of Workforce Strategy’s 2025 annual report cites Quinnipiac University’s employer-led nursing pipeline with Hartford HealthCare and Southern Connecticut State University’s evening-and-weekend BSN ladder with Yale New Haven Health System. The latter is described as serving existing patient-care technicians, certified nursing assistants and other entry-level employees.
Those examples illustrate different approaches to building a healthcare pipeline. The Northwell–CT State announcement names both students and existing employees as intended participants and includes access to employer facilities and recruiters, but does not yet specify credentials, funding terms or outcomes in comparable detail.

A UConn Today account of a Connecticut healthcare workforce symposium described the shortage as involving training access, education financing, employer demand and retention. Connecticut Chief Workforce Officer Kelli-Marie Vallieres said, “there is a lot of amazing work happening all over the state, but it’s happening in many, many silos and buckets.” The report said the state Office of Workforce Strategy is developing a “pull” system through Career ConneCT to understand employer needs and align programs. That broader context helps explain the appeal of employer-linked training, but it is not an evaluation of this particular partnership.

The announcement is a partnership plan, not an open application notice. Students and employees interested in participating will need further details from CT State or Northwell before they can determine whether a pathway fits their goals. The key practical information still to come includes the timeline, first cohort size, scholarship terms, participating courses or credentials, employee advancement criteria and how the partners will measure recruitment or retention.
