Can you see the northern lights in New England tonight, October 8, 2026? NOAA’s October 6 forecast listed geomagnetic conditions below G1 for tonight. Its G2 (moderate) watch—and the possibility of aurora as far south as New York—applies to October 9, not October 8. That broad impact statement is not a town-level forecast or a promise of a display.
What NOAA forecasts for October 8 and 9
In a watch issued October 6, 2026, at 16:33 UTC, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center listed the highest expected storm level as below G1 for October 7 and October 8, then G2 (moderate) for October 9. NOAA said G1-to-G2 storms were likely October 9 as a coronal mass ejection that left the Sun on October 6 arrived. Read NOAA’s alerts, watches and warnings.

The watch says, “Aurora may be seen as low as New York to Wisconsin to Washington state.” That is a potential impact associated with the October 9 watch. It does not establish that aurora will be visible over New England on the night of October 8, or predict visibility in any particular Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island or Connecticut town.

How to check the latest aurora forecast
-
Open NOAA’s Aurora Dashboard and check the forecast for the correct night. Its experimental viewline maps predicted aurora intensity and location over North America; NOAA describes the dashboard as bringing together tonight and tomorrow-night predictions, recent animation, short-term estimates, Kp information and viewing tips.
-
Check the three-day geomagnetic forecast for the date and time window. NOAA provides deterministic and probabilistic geomagnetic outlooks, including three-hour Kp forecasts.
-
Look at the map again close to viewing time. The experimental viewline uses OVATION and the maximum forecast Kp from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Central Time for the relevant night window. It is a forecast aid, not a guarantee that a display will appear at your location.
Why a forecast does not guarantee a sighting
Geomagnetic activity is only one part of the picture. Whether you can see aurora also depends on your location, darkness, cloud cover and solar-wind conditions. A broad regional viewline—or a Kp value by itself—cannot tell you that a particular New England town will have a visible display.

That is a single observation, not a forecast for the full night and not a New England-specific visibility estimate. See Spaceweathertracker.

Based on NOAA’s cited October 6 outlook, there is no G1-or-higher storm forecast for October 8; the stronger watch is for October 9. If you plan to look anyway, first check NOAA’s updated viewline and your local cloud forecast, then choose a dark location with a clear view of the sky. The cited outlook does not provide a New England-specific probability of seeing aurora tonight.
