The $414 million North Tarrant Express Capacity Improvement Project was announced complete on September 24, 2026, several months before its early-2027 target. The work added free general-purpose lanes to part of Loop 820 and tolled TEXpress managed lanes to part of Airport Freeway—two different upgrades on separate stretches of the corridor.
Which North Tarrant Express project finished early?
This is the later capacity-improvement project on SH 183/121 Airport Freeway and I-820, not the original North Tarrant Express project completed in 2014. TEXpress Highways announced the newer project’s completion on September 24, 2026; The Business Press published the announcement on September 29, identifying it as a press release. The work began in late 2023 and had been scheduled to finish in early 2027. The announcement puts the cost at $414 million.
The project covered 10 miles of the Airport Freeway and Loop 820 corridors between Euless and Fort Worth, crossing six Northeast Tarrant County municipalities, according to the announcement. Its stated funding source was toll revenue, with no public-sector or taxpayer money used for design and construction. That is the project’s funding account as reported in the announcement, not an independently audited finding. The Business Press: completion announcement.
What lanes were added, and where?
The upgrades differ by road segment: the Loop 820 addition is a free general-purpose lane in each direction, while the Airport Freeway addition is a TEXpress managed lane in each direction.

| Road segment | What was added | Endpoints stated in the announcement | Toll status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loop 820 | One general-purpose lane in each direction | Riverside Drive in Fort Worth to Texas Blvd. 26 in North Richland Hills | Free general-purpose lanes |
| Airport Freeway (SH 183/121) | One TEXpress managed lane in each direction | Bedford-Euless Road in North Richland Hills to FM 157/Industrial Blvd. in Euless | Managed TEXpress lanes; consult current operator information for trip-specific tolls and rules |
The completion announcement describes the lane additions and endpoints. It does not establish current toll prices, operating hours, vehicle rules, or live traffic conditions. Check current official operator or TxDOT information before making a trip that depends on those details.
How is this different from the earlier NTE milestones?
“North Tarrant Express” refers to a series of related projects, so the completion years are not interchangeable. TxDOT records substantial completion of the original I-820 and SH 121/183 project in October 2014, nine months ahead of schedule. That project rebuilt and expanded 13 miles from I-35W to the SH 121 split. TxDOT describes it as a $2.1 billion project that added four TEXpress lanes, frontage roads, and auxiliary lanes while approximately doubling existing capacity.

What do the traffic and speed figures mean?
The completion announcement says average daily traffic has increased by more than 25% since pre-construction levels in 2009. It also reports peak-rush-hour average speeds of 45 mph in general-purpose lanes and 70 mph in TEXpress managed lanes. These are figures reported by TEXpress Highways in its announcement; the material available does not provide an independent measurement methodology. They should not be read as a guarantee of current speeds or travel times.
