The most useful comparisons are business mix, contract quality, fleet economics, margins, cash conversion, balance-sheet risk and execution. NACG’s latest reviewed results show why those measures need to be read together: Q2 2026 combined revenue grew 23% year over year, while adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 20.5% from 21.6%.
The figures below are in Canadian dollars unless stated otherwise. NACG’s 2026 Annual Information Form (AIF), dated March 11, 2026, generally describes the business as at December 31, 2025. Its unaudited Q2 2026 filing covers the quarter ended June 30, 2026 and was filed August 12, 2026.

Start by comparing contractors with contractors
NACG is a contractor and equipment-services operator, not an equipment maker. Its subsidiaries and joint ventures perform contract mining and earthworks, mine-site heavy civil construction, equipment rental with maintenance, mine management, field maintenance, component remanufacturing and equipment rebuilds. Work can include removing overburden, hauling ore, building haul roads and mine infrastructure, supporting tailings operations, and reclamation.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That mix matters when choosing a comparison. A manufacturer earns revenue from selling equipment and related products or services; a contractor typically earns revenue by operating equipment or delivering a project or mine-site service. A manufacturer may be relevant to mining-industry demand, but it is not automatically a like-for-like operating peer for NACG. Before comparing companies, establish whether each earns a material share of its revenue from contract mining, earthworks, heavy civil work or maintained mining fleets.

NACG’s work spans Canada and Australia, with joint-venture interests and project exposure that can make its reported results differ from a contractor with one country, one operating model or consolidated joint ventures. The company holds 49% interests in Mikisew North American Limited Partnership (MNALP) and Nuna Group of Companies. The AIF describes MNALP as an oil-sands contractor that subcontracts work to NACG; Nuna operates in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, with other project work elsewhere in Canada. NACG also participates in the Fargo-Moorhead flood-diversion project through joint ventures, which investors should distinguish from recurring mine-services activity.
Check geographic and business mix before reading growth
For 2025, NACG reported the following revenue mix by segment, excluding its share of joint-venture revenue. The AIF’s percentages are rounded, so they total 101% rather than exactly 100%.
| 2025 reported segment | Share of revenue | Comparison point |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy Equipment–Australia | 54% | Includes MacKellar; subsequent periods also include acquired IMC, changing the scope of comparison. |
| Heavy Equipment–Canada | 45% | Consider oil-sands exposure, Canadian project mix and the distinction between NACG’s direct revenue and joint-venture activity. |
| Other | 2% | Rounded segment share; the three reported percentages sum to 101%. |
These figures are from NACG’s 2026 AIF, dated March 11, 2026, and exclude NACG’s share of joint-venture revenue. They are not a complete measure of the economic contribution of every operation. When comparing peers, align geography, mine type, customer and commodity exposure, and how joint ventures are accounted for. A company that reports joint-venture revenue differently may look larger or smaller even when the underlying activity is more similar than headline revenue suggests.
Acquisitions can also make year-over-year growth misleading if the comparison does not identify what was added. NACG’s Q2 2026 combined results included IMC, acquired in Australia. Its reported contribution should be separated from the legacy business when assessing organic growth or margin trends.

Read backlog as visibility, not as profit or cash
NACG’s AIF reported contractual backlog of C$4.0 billion after a 2025 amendment and extension of an Australian contract. Backlog can help investors assess future contracted activity, but it is not equivalent to revenue that will necessarily be recognized on a fixed schedule, and it does not establish the margin or cash the company will earn.
Compare the details behind each contractor’s backlog rather than ranking companies by the headline number alone:
- Definition and scope: Check whether backlog includes only committed work, joint ventures, extensions, options or expected renewals, and whether the company reports gross or attributable amounts.
- Committed volumes: Look for minimum volumes or hours, and distinguish them from estimates based on expected activity.
- Duration and customer concentration: Assess how long the work runs and whether a small number of customers or sites account for a large share.
- Termination, renewal and rebidding: Review whether a customer can reduce or end work, when contracts renew, and how much revenue faces competitive rebidding.
- Economics of delivery: Consider mobilization, labour, maintenance, capital and working-capital needs required to perform the work.
NACG’s AIF notes that customers may consolidate contractors, enter longer-term agreements with committed volumes, or add bidders to put pressure on prices. Those dynamics make contract terms and the competitive process important context for interpreting a large backlog.
Compare reported margins with the mix that produced them
In Q2 2026, NACG reported C$456.1 million of combined revenue, up 23% from Q2 2025, and adjusted EBITDA of C$93.5 million. Its combined adjusted EBITDA margin was 20.5%, compared with 21.6% a year earlier. Management said IMC contributed C$90.6 million of combined revenue and C$13.1 million of adjusted EBITDA in the quarter, and that IMC’s lower margin diluted the blended margin. Management also said the legacy business’s adjusted EBITDA margin was consistent with Q2 2025 when IMC was excluded.

This is a practical reason to compare profitability by segment and acquisition scope, not just total revenue growth. A larger contractor can report faster growth while earning a lower blended margin if its newer work has different economics. Check operating income and net income alongside adjusted EBITDA and its margin, and identify whether figures are consolidated, combined or attributable to joint ventures. NACG’s consolidated and combined measures differ because joint-venture revenue is equity accounted, and the company’s adjusted measures include defined adjustments.
The company’s August 12, 2026 outlook raised its 2026 combined-revenue range. These are management estimates, not results already earned:
| 2026 outlook measure | Management range | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Combined revenue | C$1.6–1.8 billion; C$1.7 billion midpoint | Forward-looking company estimate, not reported revenue. |
| Adjusted EBITDA | C$380–420 million | Forward-looking non-GAAP measure; review the company’s definition and adjustments. |
| Free cash flow | C$110–130 million | Forward-looking supplemental measure; compare the definition and cash-flow assumptions with peers’ disclosures. |
Management described the challenge in its Q2 2026 shareholder letter: “The inflection point is not simply greater scale, but our ability to translate that scale into improved performance and durable value.” This is the CEO’s perspective, not independent evidence that margins or returns will improve.
Assess fleet capacity alongside the capital it requires
At December 31, 2025, NACG reported 1,155 owned and leased heavy-equipment units across its segments and joint ventures, excluding rented equipment. Its AIF says many of its mining trucks exceed 240 tons in capacity. The count and truck capacity indicate operating scale, but do not by themselves show that the fleet earns attractive returns.

For NACG and each peer, examine how fleet structure affects both service capacity and financial demands:
- Ownership: Separate owned, leased and rented equipment; rented units are excluded from NACG’s reported 1,155-unit figure.
- Condition and utilization: Compare fleet age, availability and utilization where disclosed, while noting differences in definitions and operating conditions.
- Maintenance capability: Consider in-house field maintenance, component remanufacturing and rebuild capacity, as well as reliance on outside subcontractors.
- Capital cycle: Distinguish sustaining capital needed to maintain current operations from growth spending for new contracts or expansion.
- Returns: Test whether fleet scale translates into operating profit and cash after maintenance, replacement spending, interest and working-capital requirements.
Scale can help a contractor mobilize for large scopes and maintain service capability, but it can also bring substantial upkeep and replacement needs. Fleet counts are meaningful only alongside utilization, maintenance, capital expenditure and cash generation.

Adjusted EBITDA is not cash available to shareholders. NACG explicitly cautions that adjusted measures have limitations and should not be considered in isolation from US GAAP operating income, net income, cash flow, capital expenditures, working capital and debt service. Different contractors may define similarly named non-GAAP measures differently, so reconcile definitions before comparing them.

A useful cash and balance-sheet review includes:
- Free cash flow after sustaining capital: Separate the spending required to keep the current fleet and contracts operating from discretionary growth investment.
- Working-capital movements: Check how receivables, payables and contract timing affect cash generation during a period of growth.
- Cash interest and debt maturities: Assess the cash cost of borrowing and when principal must be refinanced or repaid.
- Leverage definitions and covenant headroom: Compare like-for-like calculations and the company’s room under borrowing terms.
- Joint-venture cash flows: Distinguish earnings recognized from cash actually received, particularly when revenue is not consolidated.
A peer with lower adjusted EBITDA may convert more of its earnings into cash after capital needs; a peer with higher reported EBITDA may carry greater fleet investment or debt-service demands. The disclosures need to establish which situation applies rather than the headline measure alone.

Account for execution, seasonality and project timing
Mining and heavy civil contractors operate in conditions where results can depend on labour availability, safety, weather, site conditions, mobilization and utilization. Project timing can move revenue and costs between quarters. Geography also affects seasonality: NACG’s AIF says Nuna activity generally peaks from June to September. A quarter-to-quarter comparison that ignores a contractor’s operating calendar may confuse normal timing with a structural change.
Review safety and workforce disclosures, utilization and availability where reported, and management’s explanation of mobilization or project timing. Treat commentary as context rather than proof of future performance. For NACG, the Q2 2026 shareholder letter discusses execution and utilization priorities, while the margin figures show that growth and profitability did not move in lockstep during that quarter.
Build a like-for-like comparison before choosing named peers
The reviewed NACG filings do not establish a standardized peer set or provide a comparable peer financial table. Rather than treating every mining-related company as a direct competitor, screen potential peers for similar contract-mining or earthworks revenue, geography, scale and accounting treatment. Then align reporting periods and currencies, and document material differences such as acquisitions, joint ventures, segment definitions and non-GAAP calculations.

- Align the scope: Compare countries, mine types, customer exposure, direct operations and joint ventures. Mark acquisition-related changes, including IMC’s contribution to NACG’s Q2 2026 results.
- Compare contracted work: Put backlog definitions, committed volumes, duration, concentration and renewal or termination provisions side by side.
- Compare operating economics: Review reported operating income and net income, then reconcile EBITDA adjustments and margins; do not mix consolidated and combined figures without identifying the difference.
- Compare capital and cash: Set fleet ownership, maintenance and sustaining investment beside working capital, cash interest, maturities and free cash flow.
- Check execution and timing: Account for seasonality, project starts, mobilization, labour and utilization before interpreting a single quarter as a trend.
The result should be a comparison of businesses with genuinely comparable work and financial definitions. If a proposed peer differs materially in business model, region or accounting, label that difference rather than allowing an attractive headline metric to imply comparability.
