For most individual users, NordPass is the more compelling starting point in 2026: its free plan includes unlimited password storage and sync, while paid tiers add sharing and security checks. But there is no categorical security winner based on encryption names alone. Your choice should turn on current checkout and renewal costs, device limits, family needs, and how you weigh LastPass’s reported 2022 breach.

NordPass vs LastPass at a glance

What matters NordPass LastPass
Free plan Officially includes unlimited password storage, automatic sync, autosave, autofill, and multifactor authentication. Its free tier is reported to allow only one active device session at a time; see NordPass plans and Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review. Current free-plan limits are not established by the official pricing page referenced here. Check the live plan details at LastPass pricing.
Family option Family plan provides six separate encrypted vaults, according to NordPass’s official plan page. Families plan includes six Premium accounts, each with an independent encrypted vault, according to LastPass’s official pricing page.
Encryption description NordPass describes its encryption as XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF; its security page says Cure53 examined its cryptographic premise, source code, background application, and codebase. See NordPass’s comparison and features. LastPass says it uses AES-256 and PBKDF2 SHA-256 salted hashes, with local, device-level encryption. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent security conclusion; see LastPass pricing.
Pricing A reliable current country-specific price and renewal amount are not stated in the referenced official plan information. A reliable current country-specific price and renewal amount are not stated in the referenced official plan information.

Which one should you choose?

Choose NordPass if its free-plan device limit works for you

NordPass is a practical first choice if you want unlimited password storage without paying and generally use one active device session at a time. Premium adds password sharing, switching between devices without logging in, Password Health checks for weak, old, or reused passwords, and a Data Breach Scanner. Its Family plan is aimed at households that want separate vaults. Review the current NordPass plan details before subscribing.

Consider LastPass if its current plan and workflow suit your household

LastPass’s Families plan lists six Premium accounts with independent encrypted vaults. Its business offering is a separate decision from personal or family use: LastPass emphasizes policy controls and administrative capabilities, while NordPass describes team and enterprise plans with sharing, monitoring, SSO, and integrations. Confirm the exact tier and current regional terms on the respective LastPass pricing and NordPass features pages.

Security: algorithms are not a verdict

NordPass identifies XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF, while LastPass describes AES-256 encryption. Those are different cryptographic designs; the names alone do not show which service is safer in practice. LastPass says only the user with the master password can decrypt and access data through its local, device-level encryption design. That is the company’s description, not an independent audit finding.

LastPass’s late-2022 incident

Security.org’s comparison, updated November 11, 2025, reports that attackers accessed LastPass customer vault data during the late-2022 incident, including encrypted passwords and unencrypted metadata such as email addresses and URLs. This account is attributed to Security.org; it does not establish whether any particular reader’s account or data was affected. Read its NordPass vs LastPass comparison for that publisher’s account.

Devices, importing, and authentication

NordPass says it supports importing data from another password manager and syncing across installed devices and browsers. Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 coverage reports support for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, and browser extensions, as well as U2F hardware keys and passkeys. The same review notes that NordPass Free allows one active device session at a time. Check the current NordPass product page and app documentation for your specific operating system and autofill setup.

Import experience can vary by app and file. Security.org’s reviewers reported that a CSV import into NordPass went more smoothly than importing through LastPass’s web app, which they said had trouble reading the CSV; they found the LastPass macOS app import worked. Those are the publisher’s observations, not a guarantee about every export or current app version. Keep the original export secure and remove it when the import is complete.

  1. Open the official NordPass plans or LastPass pricing page for your region.
  2. Proceed to the plan and checkout you would actually buy; note the billing period and total charged today.
  3. Check the renewal amount and whether a promotion changes after the initial term.
  4. Compare the total for the same period, including taxes and the number of people or accounts you need.

How to make the decision

  • For an individual starting free: NordPass is the clearer option in the available plan information, provided its one-active-device-session restriction is acceptable.
  • For a family: Both services list six-vault or six-account family offerings. Compare checkout totals and confirm what each account includes.
  • For a security-first decision: Weigh product design, audit information, and the documented incident history; do not treat a cipher label as a complete security assessment.
  • For a switch from another manager: Check platform compatibility and import steps first, then verify that the imported records and autofill work before deleting the old vault or export.
